FRA contracts Luwingu council to transport marooned maize to Chilubi

Share

The Food Reserve Agency, FRA, has contracted the Luwingu District Council to transport 926 x 50 kilogramme bags of basal and top dressing fertilizer to Chilubi district.

The fertilizer consignment was marooned in Luwingu due to poor road networking.

Luwingu District Council Secretary, Harris Bwalya, confirmed to ZANIS yesterday that
the council has been contracted by FRA to transport fertilizer for the 2006/007
farming season.

He said the fertilizer had been marooned in the district because transporters had
been shunning to undertake the contract due to the poor state of roads.

However, farmers in Chilubi district have condemned the move by FRA to transport the
inputs at this time of the year saying their maize fields have already been
destroyed due to lack of fertilizer.

They charged that there was no need for the FRA to start delivering basal dressing
fertilizer at this time because the commodity was much needed in December and
January.

They appealed to government prepare adequate relief food to be distributed to
Chilubi island due to the anticipated crop failure resulting from lack of
fertilizer.
