Zesco United lead has been cut from 9 to 7 points after they rallied to draw 1-1 at home against visiting Lusaka Dynamos at the Trade Fair Grounds in Ndola.

Zesco found themselves 1-0 down into the first half after Josphat Nkhoma gave Dynamos the lead in the 2nd minute of the first half against a depleted Zesco.

Zesco were without key players in striker Enoch Sakala, midfielder Rainford Kalaba and defender Willy Chinyama who are away on international duty with Zambia in Togo today to play a friendly.

Also missing was goalkeeper Jacob Banda is with the Under-23 in Mali to play an Olympic qualifier.

Zesco restored parity in the 64th minute through midfielder Maybin Mwaba to see the two side’s share the points for the second time this season after earlier drawing 1-1 in the first league meeting in a week 8 game played on April 9 in Lusaka.

Zesco are on 50 points, while Green Buffaloes stayed second on 43 points after beating Red Arrows 1-0 at Independence stadium in Lusaka this afternoon.

Dynamos meanwhile are 4th on 38 points, two less than 3rd placed Kabwe Warriors who beat bottom placed Nakambala Leopards 2-1 thanks to goals from Henry Banda and Siloni Jere in the 31st and 83rd minutes.

    MALI 1 ZAMBIA 2

IT may be early days yet but Zambia can claim bragging rights following their hard fought away victory against Mali in the 2008 Olympic Games qualifier at March 26 Stadium in Bamako last night.

Signs Chibambo and Francis Kasonde put the Peter Kaumba-drilled lads in a commanding position following their goals that brightened Zambia’s participation at the world’s greatest sports gathering- Olympics.

    Zambia moved to six points.

Delegation leader, Rix Mweemba, who confirmed the results in a telephone interview from Bamako last night, said Zambia put up a gallant fight.

Mali made a false start scoring in the 13th minute.

But Nakambala Leopards’ Chibambo equalised in the 40th minute when he beat two defenders before slotting the ball into the net.

Kasonde ensured that Zambia earned a win five minutes from time when he powered in a rebound after Chibambo’s shot was blocked.

“ The boys were excellent and they deserve to win. As I’m talking to you the players and technical bench are singing the famous Chipolopolo song,” said Mweemba, who is also Football Association of Zambia treasurer.

The other game yesterday saw Ivory Coast hosting Senegal in Abidjan.

The Zambian squad is expected in the country on Saturday aboard a Kenyan
    Airways flight.

The junior Chipolopolo started the campaign for a place in Beijing with a
2- 0 win over Ivory Coast on June 3 at Chingola’s Nchanga Stadium while
Senegal and Mali settled for a 1-1 draw in Dakar.

Zambia last competed at the Olympic Games in 1988 in Seoul, South Korea, where the late Samuel “Zoom” Ndhlovu-drilled lads reached the quarter-finals.

On her way to the last eight, Zambia drew 2-2 with Iraq, massacred Italy and Guatemala 4-0 each before crushing 0-4 to the then West Germany.

In Seoul, soccer icon Kalusha Bwalya scored five goals resulting in him being named 1988 African-Footballer-Of-The-Year.

  7. 10 years ago who would have thought a player from Nakambala Leopards would don on national colours?? I must admit we seem to have maintained a good under 23 team over the years.we just seem to lose the plot at senior level. Kaumba must be doing something right and i’m hoping the stability of the coaching staff at under 23 level contributes to its frequent successes.

  8. ZAMBIAN chess star Amon Simutowe has inched even closer to the coveted grand master title with a perfect 4-0 start to the Max Euwe Invitational tournament currently underway in the Netherlands.

Simutowe, who needs a minimum of seven points out of nine to earn a grand master norm, stepped closer to his dream after winning his four opening matches.
The US-based chess ace has so far defeated three international masters and one grand master.

“This is incredible for me. I was hoping for a good tournament but I did not expect such a good start. What is even more incredible is that I have won three of these four games while playing black pieces as this is considered a disadvantage,” Simutowe said.
Simutowe has so far beaten international masters Puchen Wang from New Zealand, Willy Hendricks and Vincent Rothuis both from the Netherlands and grand master Nona Gaprindashvilli.

Gaprindashvilli is a 66-year-old female chess legend who was the first woman to earn a male grand master title.

“Playing her was a great honour and beating her was something else. She is a former women’s world champion and first woman to earn a male grand master title,” Simutowe said.

“I outplayed her strategically in the middle game and end game. The game lasted about five hours. I hope my next few games will start ending in less than four hours.”
“But unfortunately my strategies are creating a situation of long games. I’m choosing strategies which drop the probability of me losing to about 10 per cent while retaining a very small advantage and then try to squeeze a win from there. This strategy requires a lot of accuracy and hence takes a lot of physical energy,” said Simutowe.
Simutowe is currently leading the tournament at four points while Indian grand master Dibyendu Barua is in second place with three points.

  9. Ba Joze # 19, this story you copied and paste from the Post is outdated because Simutowe was by yesterday at 4.5 points having drawn with another grand master. You should have done your CP (copy and Paste) from yesterday’s Zambia Daily Mail, let me help you here

    Simutowe holds grand master

    By STEPHEN PHIRI
INTERNATIONAL Master Amon Simutowe yesterday drew with grand master Oscar Panno at the Euwe Stimulans Invitational in the Netherlands. Simutowe still leads with 4.5points. “Another tough match with another great grand master Oscar Panno. He was Junior World Champion in 1953. He invented the Panno variation in the Kings Indian Defence. “Experience saved him a great deal. I spent four hours looking at his strategies of the last twenty years and I imagined he would defend with the Sicilian Defence. I prepared a variation which would not make experience a great factor. When I played e4, he responded with the French Defence and he has only used it to twice the last fifteen years,” Simutowe said yesterday. “After the game, he told me that he figured I would be stronger if he defended with the Sicilian…and hence chose the French.” Simutowe is expected to play another grand master Olafsson in the next round with black pieces. And in the fourth round Simutowe beat Vincent Rothuis. “I beat him in 20 moves which is quite early at master level. He is a tactical genius but I didn’t give him a chance to display his talent. I hope I will keep up my performance. “We have five games remaining but given my level of opposition, 3/6 would be considered a great result. I have to play four grand masters and five fellow international masters. If I go the first six rounds undefeated, it would be difficult to stop me,” Simutowe said.

  10. “Simutowe citapo cimo!” An old adage for the great midfielder accorded to Boniface Simutowe “to do something special” when the chips were down for Zambia! He indeed could score by putting Zambia back into the fight of any major soccer game whenever these words were uttered. We salute Amon for his consistence and for showing other chess players that with discipline and hard work the sky is the limit for anyone. I remember several years ago Chamboli Sec School dominated chess in Zambia producing the coveted DGM champion. Today, chess has permeated all the matrix of our society and producing a grand master will undoubtedly boost this sport. Go Amon go!

  11. Nkan suppoters, do not just support your tem by word of mouth. You cn do omething say contribute 100US$ everthing month and if there are 300 of you, it means 30 000 dollars for Nkana everymonth and covert that to our Kwacha, then Nkana would be go back to where it rightly belongs in the zambian soccer. Word of caution is that, it does not mean that when Nkana comes to the Premier division then , it will contributr players to the national soccer team, where are these player going to come from? Nkana will needto invest in infrastructure, players and motivate the plyers etc and it must sell itself by coming up with website like most PSL sides in South Africa, that is where South Afric beats us.A lot needs to done to develop the Zambin soccer. I think I can do better if given a chance to run the FAZ.

  13. Now FAZ settles for Hungarian
    By Sports Reporter

IN an unprecedented turn of events, FAZ has back-peddled on its decision to employ Frenchman, Noel Tosi, for the position of Zambia coach due to public outcry and has since settled for Hungarian, Bertalan Bicskei.
At an executive meeting held on Friday last week at Football House in Lusaka, FAZ reluctantly agreed to pick on Bicskei, who was next in ranking on the recruitment list in a head-hunting exercise.
According to both Government and FAZ sources, the meeting was attended by five of the nine elected committee members and one of the two ex-officials from the Ministry of Sport, Youth and Child Development, but members were split on the recruitment of Bisckei, a former Malaysian coach.
The sources said the meeting, that was chaired by FAZ president Teddy Mulonga and attended by committee members, Henschel Chitembeya, Joseph Nkole, Henry Sichembe, George Kasengele and Isaac Mwape, the deputy director at the Ministry of Spo
