Motorist on Maamba/Batooka road warned

Share

Sinazongwe District Commissioner (DC) has warned motorists coming to Sinazongwe to be careful following the 29 dangerous spots that have been identified on Maamba/Batooka and are about to fall any time.

Mr. Laiven Apuleni said drivers should drive slowly to avoid any accident.

On Wednesday Sinazongwe district was cut off from the rest of the country following the collapse of the culvert along the Sikalamba stream in Sinazeze.

Mr. Apuleni said the collapse of the culverts at Sikalamba stream was the worst as compared to the three culverts that collapsed on the same road in December and January this year.

He described the incident as sad situation for Sinazongwe adding that it was also a sign to show that the Maamba/Batooka road has outlived its usefulness since it was built in the 1960s.

The DC said the only way was to completely rebuild the entire road to avoid patching it at every spot.

He said the construction of the culverts at Sikalamba stream would cost government a lot of money since the gap that the floods had left was too big.

A Check at the site By ZANIS found long queues of vehicles and people watching helplessly at the Road Construction Company (RCC) which has been deployed to reconstruct the culverts.

The youths have also taken advantage of the situation by over charging business men to carry their mealie meal, beer, and other assorted items across the stream.

Mr. Apuleni said situation would lead to increase of the prices of essential commodities such as mealie meal and sugar.

“The situation is bad for people’s budget, it’s the worst that the district has witnessed since floods started,” Mr. Apuleni said.

RCC Bottom Road site Engineer William Makoni said Belly Bridge would be used on the damaged road.

Mr. Makoni said if his workers brought it on Thursday they could finish building it on Friday and by evening vehicles would be allowed to pass.

Sinazongwe district has been cut off from the rest of the country for the fourth time within the period of one month two weeks.

  1. whats up with this sinazongwe place. is it the only place in zambia where u guys find news from? as a journalist i get very annoyed when there is no diversity. get off you back sides and travel for news napapata

  2. It just shows how some pipo be-little others. The road is impassable is that not news enough to you #2? This road carries the only coal in Zambia, if you did not know.Chilanga cement, Copper mines on CB all depend on this coal.Does this improve your knowledge and shames ur ignorance? Otherwise, go back and redo ur journalism diploma … serious.

  3. Just shows how little knowledge #2mwaba has about Zambia. You think Zambia is Lusaka. As #4 pointed out there is a whole huge mining component that supports the big mines on the CB and you would be surprised that there is a very huge and vibrant mining community from all parts of Zambia in Sinazonge. Once in a while load up your family in your car and tour this country. There is a lot that Zambia has and you will be amazed. You are missing out, man. These places are not just for foreign tourist, besides you will even get cheap Zambian rates, take advantage, man.

  4. #4 mwaba, please let yo contribution issue based. If you dont like reading about sinazongwe then read some other stories. Lt does not belong to you!

  5. The MMD government if full of selfish people. They can manage to grade any road wherever there are bye elections and can distribute any materials that they believe can make people vote for them. As I am writing this message Namwala can not be reached because Choma dam bridge has been washed away, Mapanza-pemba road is impassable and Niko- monze road is impassable too. vehicles are getting in the middle of the road on Namwala -Choma road. This is a govt of thieves who do not care about others. Any economy which does not benefit local people is useless or meaningless.

  6. I take great exception to people like Mwaba. If you don’t like news from Sinazongwe leave it to others who need it. If you were born in Lusaka and do not know your village, just shut up.This is real news to me,though bad to the affected, because I have driven on Pemba-Mapanza,Monze-Namwala and Sinazongwe roads and know how how it feels when a road is impassable.I hail from Senanga(Nalolo) and experienced floods and its effects. And I have driven through bad roads in Liberia. So do not belittle other peoples places and suffering they are going through. Please eat what you want from the menu.Simple.

  7. LT reports on various issues in diferent parts of Zambia. Mwaba must be new to this site.

I also would mlike to thanks Lusaka Times.com for such news. This is an article that can save lives.

    Viva LT.
