Zambia Wednesday Football Briefs

Share

-Faz have revealed that newly appointed Zambia Coach Herve Renard was hired because the association was seeking a coach looking for a new challenging coaching experience on the continent.

Faz spokesman Emmanuel Munaile said at Wednesday press briefing at Football House in Lusaka today when he officially confirmed the news that the Frenchman would be Zambia’s next head coach.

“We wanted someone who understands African football and we thought it would not do us good to go to someone who has been head coach but wanted someone to prove a point and Renard was appealing; others we could not afford,” Munaile said.

Munaile added that Faz another reason 39-year-ol Renard fitted the bill was due to Faz budgetary confinements.

“If we want best coach, we need more money to pay them because they don’t come cheap,” The Faz spokesperson said.

“We had to work within our perimeters and we are convinced this man will come to add value to what we have.”

The Frenchman is expected to sign next week before embarking on his first full African experience as head trainer to join the list well-traveled of European missionary coaching force at the helm of national teams on the continent.

Ranard is currently Ghana national team assistant coach to Claude Le Roy.

Should the two parties put pen to paper, Renard’s first match in charge will be away to Togo on May 30 in a 2010 World Cup preliminary Group 11 qualifying match.

Renard club experience as coach spans the last nine years with spells at French lower league teams SC Draguigan from 1999 to 2001 and AS Cherbourg from 2005 to 2007 before being Le Roy’s assistant with the Black Stars.

In-between, Renard was assistant trainer at Chinese top side Shanghai Shenhua from 2002 to 2003.

He also coached current English Conference team Cambridge United in the 2004/2005 season while they were in League Two before begin relegated at the end of the same season.

-Zambia Under-20 invited for 3-nation junior tournament in Saudi Arabia at end of May.

The tournament will see Zambia face the Under-21 teams of hosts Saudi Arabia and Japan at the friendly youth event.

-Lusaka Dynamos defender Hichani Himoonde recalled to the Zambia team for CHAN return leg match against Botswana on May 17.

The team goes into camp in Lusaka this Sunday after losing 1-0 in the first leg match played on May 2 to Botswana in Gaborone.

Also back in the team is Kabwe Warriors striker Emmanuel Mayuka who missed Zambia’s away match in Botswana due to trials he was attending at Sporting Lisbon in Portugal.

However, there is no call-up for the home leg match against Botswana for Zesco United midfielder Rainford Kalaba.

Kalaba failed to join the team in camp in Lusaka last week prior ahead of their away game to Botswana.

But there is also a recall for Green Buffaloes midfielder Sebastian Mwansa who together with Himoonde was omitted from the first leg against Botswana.

Mwansa’s club mate goalkeeper Mike Poto is also back in the team after his club withdrew him from the CHAN qualifier against Botswana due to pressing club commitments.

Zesco United defender William Chinyama who missed the first leg due to a family commitment also returns.

  1. I just wanted to say that FAZ has done what is within their power to have a Foreign coach after a long time. Let us all be supportive and help Renard deliver. No is perfect not even Sir Alex Furggoson. We all learn as we go and I wish Renard a good stay in Zambia.

  2. At the Nations Cup in Ghana, Renard was handed a one-match ban by the Disciplinary Committee of the Confederation of African Football and missed the quarterfinal game between Ghana and Nigeria. Renard also coached Cambridge United when they were in League Two of English football. He was sacked as manager of Cambridge following the club’s disappointing performances.Renard, who took over from fellow Frenchman Claude Le Roy in the summer of the season 2004/2005, was shown the door after Cambridge’s eighth loss in nine games

  3. So with the observations of Choma 1 # 3, what good do you expect from such a coach with such a bad CV? Haven’t we hired another Ziese? Or FAZ no longer cares cos its free money from KCM mgnt?

  4. Nafishiba nokwishiba ati the chap is cheap material. Cheap is very expensive! This will cost us as Zambians – what a secret to even blow out publicly!!!

“If we want best coach, we need more money to pay them because they don’t come cheap” ….

Doesn’t this chap realise that the sentiments are rather more insulting than praising on our team spirit as a nation! “Others we couldn’t afford …”

  5. With the hefty sum of money pumped in by KCM mgt, FAZ should have compromised with HCM, to hire at least 4 experienced local coaches, so much so that, two of them drill the team while the other two source for talented players through out zed, rural zed inclusive. What difference does it make for a good coach to drill tired legs of the current players in the national team that has failed zed from time to time? Too much bukoko na basimbi bafana aba. Most of these chaps have more than once to the AFCON, where Zed was booted out in the preliminaries. Personally i feel FAZ needs to do more to help the hired coach, cos it will b painful to miss 2010 cup in RSA. And Faz expect mulilo.

  6. It is good that finally the Chipolopolo Boys have a Foreign Coach. Welcome Sir!!!. However, the FAZ Vice-Presido Mr. Emmanuel Munaile’s remark is somewhat worrying. The remark: …”If we want best coach, we need more money to pay them because they don’t come cheap”….Clearly one is made to conclude that FAZ already knows the fact that there isn’t much to expect from the Foreign Coach although they would us believe otherwise. The man’s CV isn’t impressive at all. I believe there are Zedian coaches with better qualifications and experience who will be much willing to accept the job for less than half of what they are offering this man.

  7. I feel phiri has more african experience than the so called cheap renard.Remembr cheap is expensive.U cant go frm high phiri 2 low renard with no cv at o. U shld hav lookd 4 a better coach than cheap renard.Did we say we hav faild 2 add on kcm mgn contribution?C’mon guys.Even th governt could hav added abit if u askd.
For nw we wil waitd 2 c th results.

  8. I would like to congratulate the new FAZ executive for recruiting the new coach expediently. We should welcome Herve and I urge all soocer stakeholders(especially us soccer fans)to support and help him. We should not start criticising him now before he has even signed the contract. Lets be patient and we shall judge him based on the national team’s performance. Good luck Herve and welcome to Zambia!!!

  9. No Phiri is useless and passive let him go and prove himself in Swaziland where they want him.

  10. It is a good choice. What CV did Poulsen had before coached Zambi?. How many managers with rich CVs have failed terribly. Look at Parreira with a World Cup Winners CVs but failed to win the 2008 Africa Cup. Leroy and Neveu have been in African football for a long time but what have beeb there achievements?

Do not rush to negativity before the guy can even sign the contract. We have a good coach who we can pay and who will be motivated to carry our flag high.

He is not cheap but affordable

  11. #12 Paulsen like Ian Poterfield just depended on luck, this is the crop of players that was Zambia B which was just as good as Zambia A at the time, this Renrad guy has to built a team like the was Samuel Zoom, Col Brightwell Banda, Godfrey Chitalu (Alex Chola) did before that fateful day in Gabon. So he has a lot to do and he cannot make for the combined experience of Patrick Phiri, George Lwandamina (Fifa World Cup coach), and Peter Kaumba who i think even collectively do not get as much as 15,000 USD which I think this inexperienced coach will be bringing. I will be very happy to swallow my words!!!

  12. Black Stars physical trainer appointed Zambia coach!!!!Other media reports like that.KAYA??????

  13. Black Stars physical trainer Renard Herve has been confirmed as the new head caoch of the Zambia national football team, according to Ghanasoccernet sources in the southern African country.

  14. The following is the what has been reported by ghanasoccernet
    in addition to #15 contribution.

“Herve was part of Ghana’s technical team that won bronze at the Nations Cup on home soil”.

“He is also a qualified coach and was Le Roy successor at English side Cambridge FC in 1994”.

“Herve is expected to fill the gap created at the Chipolopolo technical set-up with the firing of Patrick Phiri”.

  15. The Reality is FAZ is broke … and so they have to take the offer from Konkola Copper Mines but the offer means they have to get an expat coach … so they get the cheapest guy available on the continent …

The guy doesnt have the best CV … I agree that neither did Poulsen but this guy had the worst run ever in History at Cambridge united, a 2nd division side in the UK …
I don’t see the logic FAZ is applying here … why do the chipolopolo boys always have to be the Guinea pigs for coaches …

I’m sure if FAZ applied their resources wisely, they can find somebody in South or Central America that is coaching a 1st division side and has a good record in that league … good luck …

  16. #17 I agree with you these guys are dancing to KCM tune, forget about people who really matter in the soccer scene the guy in Lundazi who collapses after Zambia loses, the wife in Chilenje who has to contend with a hot tempered husband because zambia has lost. To hell with their money, hire a local coach, imagine all the success zambia has recorded with the exception of 1974 when Ante Buselic was the coach, in 1994 as mentioned it was a team put together by local coaches. But Zambia was on the road to 1994 world cup because of the Michael Mwapa and his team at FAZ and then Godfrey UCAR Chitalu and Alex ‘Computer’ Chola on the field of play. So local is laka, I think I am obsessed with local!

  17. 1988 Seoul Olympics (Samuel Zoom Ndlovu), 1997 Inaugural COSAFA, (George Mungwa), 1998 (George Mungwa I think if not Fred Mwila) 2006 (Patrick Phiri), so where did Ted Dmitru take us, where did Bukhard Ziese take us, Poulsen, Poterfield, etc, no where, reason, expatriate coaching a 6th division club. Even Fabio Capello with his experience is finding it difficult in London yet Stephen Keshi took togo to the world cup.

  18. Steve Keshi would not have been bad .Lets hope the new guy understands Zambia s weakneses .In any case all the best.Phiri was not bad either ,its just that he was more of a local coach and not a Manager.I am saying this beacuse the guy could not monitor the progress of his foreign based players. He was busy looking for Sinkala when its was clear the guy was in hospital, never knew how sichone was doing so as mbesuma. He was busy talking about Mido when everyone knew that he would play for Egypt. In all i think phiri should been taken back to U17 or u20 u23 or left as an assistant

  19. I would also like to take this opportunity to Welcome the new Coach Herve Bernard to Zed.We wish you all the best. Some of the guys on this blog are always negative. We know you, even if Faz had hired Jose Mourinho you would have had some thing bad to say.Rather give the guy time after a few games then we can comment.
    # 15 Do you know that J.Mourinho was just an Interpreter at Barcelona Fc to Bobby Robson one time. It’s not about what people call you but the issue here is the man able to deliver?

  20. #19 We should also look at howmany local coaches have taken Zambia to the World Cup or taken Zambia to the finals of AFCON.

To me no Zambian coach has ever performed better than expats

1974 Finals against DR Congo (Zaire)-Ante Buselic

1990 Semi Finals against Nigeria- Samuel Zoom Ndlhovu

1994 Finals against Nigeria – Ian Poterfield (MHSRIP)

1996 Semi Finals against Tunisia – Roald Poulsen

    World Cup qualification-Non

So who is better expartiriate or local.

There is no need to be emotional about this. Lets face facts, we do not have a local coach who can take our game to the highest level. Just look at how we struggle in caf club competitions

  21. thought i give you an insight on the this man’s record at a very low level club at CAMBRIDGE UNDER RENARD
    League & Cup record:
    Played: 25
    Won: 4
    Drawn: 7
    Lost: 14
    Goals for: 20
    Goals against: 32
and this is what Cambridge had to say after they fired him. Am not saying he is a bad coach.

Chairman Gary Harwood told the club’s website: “It was very amicable and it is something we didn’t want to do.

“But we have not got time for Renard’s philosophy to flow through to our team, given where we are in the league.”

Renard took over from fellow Frenchman Claude Le Roy in the summer but the loss to Oxford was Cambridge’s eighth in nine games.

  22. I am offering myself as part of the Zambian technical bench (l.o.l). My job will be to make them watch world class football games before training, have a 60 minute-analysis (in a classroom situation, discussing the game, with pen and paper), and take them on the pitch! [Remember when you were a kid how you used to feel that you can beat anyone after watching a Bruce Lee movie? I plan to use the same technique). Do we have a psychologist on the team? His job? To motivate them and tell them that they too can be part of that history, SA 2010; we also need a teacher who will teach them how to read & speak english, good for their confidence. This sounds ludicrous, but it just may work (l.o.l.)

  23. What do FAZ want? good result or save money which has been given to them by KCM. God knows what kind of *****s are in FAZ. From now own I quit supporting the national team cause I can be spending money on people who dont know how to use it. enough is enough. ZAMBIA WILL NOT QUALIFY TO THE 2010 AFRICA AND WORLD CUPS. All those players ho are in the U20 team are 25yrs and above. I know most of them.

  24. I would like to see more local coaches traveling abroad to learn their trade and earn their stripes, we will always need local coaches and we desperately need more experience to draw from and the standard to rise here. Kalu and Phiri just had a chance and i think we can safely say neither managed to fulfill the potential.

The job for Mr. Renard won’t be easy either, but the talent and potential is definitely there.
I wish everyone good luck and a “can do” attitude.

  25. Welcome to Zambia Herve Renard. Your CV may not be impressive, but time will tell how much you will do for Zambia. Stay focussed and keep well.

As for local coaches, I think we have had enough of them for some time now. And so, a change of this magnitude – bring in of a foreign coach – is inevitable.

Well done Great Kalu and team.

Just to add to what # 25 suggested, you (FAZ) may need the services of a PHYSICIST (Physics Graduate) also to tells the lads the dynamics of how the ball moves in fluids (air flow) around it. Lots of Physicists are moving around in the streets of Lusaka and hence one can be tapped without a problem or much effort.

  26. #28 Pardon me, but what do mean by the word “Physicis”, sorry but I am lost?

As for the coach I have mixed feelings, cause with 20,000 dollars a month, we could have got a better qualified coach and pay him say 12,000 dollars with the 2 zambian assistants getting 4,000 dollars each. If I were in FAZ for football and not personal gains that is what I would have suggested. If this guy will get 15,000 dollars then the 2 Zed assistants should get 2,500 dollars each, thus this adds to 20,000 dollars. And this will mean assistants on contract for the same period as the coach. Some has to fight for these assistants takwaba. Kalu was getting 10,000 dollars and yet mu zambian PP got peanuts

  27. Anyway Chris saved BIF from humiliation at the home ground, in a match against relegation bound Viborg. Viborg lead 0-1 from a goal scored in the first half, while Chris watched from the bench. The benching of Chris was explained by the as being that Chris has played too many games in a short time and needed a break, however seeing defeat in the face he broght Chris and the boy paid back with 3 minutes remaing with a header to make one all and save BIF from the first defeat to Viborg at home in 8 years.

  29. I was part of the people that supported having a Zambian to train the national team but not after the disgrace we experienced at the just ended CAN 2008.We`ve got admit that our local coaches are not yet technically up the challenge that comes with major tournaments.
Hats off to Lwandamina for the chemistry that he built within the U20 and that`s the reason he should be part of the senior team.We got to realise that there`s time and time again that our local coaches always fail us when the can`t read the game. They usually lack the ability to read the game and apply approriate tactics to change the match. This is the area were we need foreign help.Remember CAN 96 Zambia down against Egypt cnt

  30. #23 If truth be told we have not invested so much in our local coaches, our football is not so much about the coach but about player psych. Zambian players are just as good as any other player as long as they have the right confidence and attitude.

  31. continued from #32
Poulsen read the game and made necessary changes and Zambia ended up winning the match. There`s a reason Mourhino is called the special one.Ability to read the game.
Zambia at CAN 06 led in all the matches but failed to capitalise and qualify to the quarter finals. The story is same when the late Bamfuchile took us to the africa cup.
My hope is that this new coach is technically sound to get us to the next level. There`s alot of success that Renard scored with Ghana that should inspire us.Ghana is were they are because of the foundation they built with the junior national teams and that exactly what Zambia has done.
Zambia is on the verge to recapture the lost glory.

  32. #29 wrote “#28 Pardon me, but what do mean by the word “Physicis”, sorry but I am lost?”

As i already posed in #28, a “Physicist” is just a person who has studied Physics, the most fundamental of all sciences (Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics itself), at a university level. Any physics undergraduate programme across the whole world will comprise of a course known as “classical mechanics” in which all forms of motion are studied to a reasonable depth. So stuff like billiard ball movements – in the game of pool – are well covered together with how a football moves when kicked in a certain way with some specified force and spin of a player – say Brazilian Kaka.

    Hope this helps.

  33. I agree with the need for an expatriate coach given that our coaches have not been given the proper training. I do however, disagree with this choice. It would appear to me it’s a case of a foreigner as opposed to experience. I mean, why was Stephen Keshi never considered seriously even when it was evident he was not going to carry on as the Togo coach. He is a proven commodity with the much sought after technical acumen. I fail to see the logic in this choice. I wish him all the best in any regard.

  34. #36 Matafwali i would like to agree with you on Stephen Keshi being a good Coach.Unfortunately the guy is Employed by

  35. Mali.Unfortunately the time that the new Faz Executive was looking for a Coach Keshi was already approached by Mali.Iam sure Kalu would have liked to employ the guy cos the are friends after all.
Justice thanks for the info on Chris.Cheers

  37. Someone said, “there is no friendship on business.” The Chipolopolo boys’ coaching is not to be taken lightly. We need people with skill to impart in our lads. The lads need to be motived to believe that they can do any assignment given them no matter how the opponents appear.

So let us drill the boys so that they can do the needful for the country.

There is no time for funnies or experiments, but seriousness only.

  38. #36 Matafwali
I agree with you that Zambia missed a golden opportunity on hiring Keshi. There was a time he was literally asking FAZ to hire him.He could have been a perfect fit for our team.Anyway, that`s history and all we need to do is focus on what we have and hope for the best.

  39. Those of us who advocated for a foreign coach were not saying ‘any foreign coach’. The logic was that since we had a very small pool of good local coaches whom we had exhausted lets look for a better coach outside. However, this Renard guy doesn’t seem to fall in the category of better than local coaches. If he is of Ziese’s calibre then we might as well have Peter kaumba coaching Chipolopolo. Mr Renard can u prove the cynics wrong???

  40. Good local coaches are gone- the late zoom, Mungwa, chitalu, Chola. All these coaches have gone and taken zambia’ winning mentality. We no longer have good local coaches PP is lousy, Peter kaumba might have been a good left winger, but he is not a good coach. I wonder where they got their coaching credentials- Afred Mulao, Malitoli, Siwale, Chilumba etc. Fighton Simukonda is supposed to the the best coach around, because he was among the first of the currnt generation of coaches to be sent to the Uk for a coaching course when he was at Vitafoam united, before moving to Nkana. But for ome reason, I dont know what has happened with the guy.

  41. So new coach means new players.I feel sory for the players that are used for experiments all the time.Faz just went out and got the cheapest guy they could find. With the kind of record he hasi give hime a few months then we will all know why he was fired as the assistant coach, and why he has a terrible c.v
Way to go el chipo fazo…rediculous

  42. Chips #44 Apart from Simukonda there’s a coach whom Zambians have completely overlooked. His name is Michael Kapembwa. He also went abroad to Germany I think and on return took the reigns at Mighty. In his reign Mighty played a wonderful brand of soccer. Those who remember the epic Nkana vs Mighty cup finals of the mid to late 80s will testify that Kapembwa was one of the brainy coaches in the country. Unfortunately he seems to have gone underground. Does anyone know where he is?
