The Director of Commerce, Trade and Industry has disclosed that investment worth one billion USA dollars is expected to be pumped into coal mining and generation of power in Sinazongwe and Gwembe district in Southern Province.

He said the team was in the district to assess potential investment areas and how the community would receive the projected investment once it comes in the district.

The Director noted that it was important to start sensitizing people early to ensure that they also benefit from the inflow of investment and to reduce on the fears of displacement.

Sinazongwe DC said there were a lot of investors interested in the mining of coal and generation of thermal power in the district.

Mr. Apuleni reaffirmed that Maamba Coal mine also intends to start generating power using coal to supplement the Zambia Electricity Supply Corporation’s (ZESCO) effort in servicing Zambians.

He said Sinazongwe district has a lot of coal deposits in both Senior Chief Mweemba and Chief Sinazongwe area.

The DC disclosed that the district has uranium deposits and gases that could boost the economic potential of the district.

He said the projected investment into the district was recommendable as it would ease the high rate of hunger resulting from droughts.

  2. Brain Dead, Uranium will constitute a critical percentage of future energy sources. More eco-friendly mining and processing technologies are being developed. You shouldn’t be very worried.
Zambia has capable mining and met engineers to ensure that the interests of all stakeholders are held.

  3. Brain Dead what do you mean silly idea of uranium mining? Uranium is booming at the moment, I leave in Namibia, there two mines operating and six more mines are expected before 2015. Do a google search nuclear energy is back. Z won’t have nuclear plants we will just export yellow cake.

  4. THIS TIME AROUND, PLS, CONSIDER THE DOMESTICATION OF COAL TO SOLVE THE PROBLEM OF DEFORESTATION IN ZAMBIA WHICH IS GALLOPING LIKE MADNESS. COAL CAN BE USED IN PLACE OF CHACOAL. AND COAL IS USED IN DOMESTIC HOMES THE WORLD OVER. WHY SHOULD WE BE CUTTING DOWN TREES FOR CHACOAL WHEN WE HAVE PLENTY OF COAL IN Z? THE JOURNEY FROM LUSAKA TO THE CB IS FRIGHTENING IN TERMS OF HOW BARE THE LAND HAS BECOME. PLS, FELLOW ZAMBIANS LETS PRESERVE OUR ENVIRONMENT.
