JOHANNESBURG, July 3 (Reuters) – Zambian President Levy Mwanawasa died in a Paris hospital on Thursday after suffering a stroke earlier this week, South Africa’s Talk Radio 702 reported.

The radio quoted a Zambian High Commission spokesman as saying that Mwanawasa died earlier on Thursday morning. Mwanawasa was taken to hospital in Egypt just before an African Union summit on Monday and Tuesday and then transferred to Paris.

    It’s being reported this morning that Zambia’s cabinet ministers and security chiefs are meeting amid contradictory reports that the country’s President Levy Mwanawasa may have died.

    A man claiming to be head of protocol at the Zambian High Commission in Pretoria told Eyewitness News that Mwanawasa had passed away.

    Mwanawasa was transferred to France on Tuesday following
    “successful surgery” in Egypt after he suffered a stroke at an
    African summit, an Egyptian official said.

    Mwanawasa, 59, was rushed to a hospital on Sunday ahead of
    the African Union meeting in the resort of Sharm el-Sheikh.

    “He had successful surgery and he was transferred today to
    France to continue his treatment,” Egyptian Foreign Ministry

Why is it that all major cable news networks have not reported on this? Even France 24 and Al-Jazeera which are always quick on reporting issues pertaining to Africa have not reported anything.     International reports suggesting that President Mwanawasa had died are only malicious and untrue.

    Chief government spokesperson, Mike Mulongoti said the President who is admitted to a French Hospital is still in a stable condition.

    Mr. Mulongoti who is also Information Minister said this in a national address on ZNBC Television.

    He said doctors attending to the President are happy with the progress made so far and his condition remains stable.

    Mr. Mulongoti said D. Mwanawasa has continued to recieve treatment for hypertension in the intensive care unit at Percy Military Hospital in Paris, France.

    The First Lady and family members are at his bedside.

Hello pipo, my cousin from Clamart in France has just called me to say actually our president is alive though on life support machines and that he is not in Paris as being reported but in a town called clamart which is near Paris. The hospital has high security that any news to come out of there will have to be official so please people do not listen to speculation. The moment anything out of the ordinary happens the right chanelles shall let the world know. Confidentially is high priority when it comes to patients at the hospital. I employ everyone to brace for anything but above all to pray for LPM.
