  1. Why did we send a small delegation, less than 12 people when we do afford to send 24 football players abroad several times only to lose. Olympics is about the number of participants in various sports categories.

Why have retrogressed, where are ZAF, ZAMNIA ARMY, ZNS , ZAMBIA POLICE athletes that composed most of our olympics delegation before. A small delegation puts pressure on the delegation to bring medals. Why do we want to stress our sportsmen.

  2. We need to invest in sports. In China they have training facilities everywhere including schools, shopping molls and residential areas. They have invested heavily in sport, that’s why they win medals. In our case we would rather allocate play grounds as “ma plot” instead of using them for games. It’s a shame that even school sports fields have been converted into residential plots. That’s why our soccer standards have gone down.

  3. #4 His Leadership, honorable I am can’t imagine how you can think like that, does sending of athletes depend on economy? How can you just pick ANYTHING from your security forces to go and compete in Olympics. I guess there are rules and capacity/level of competitors. Don’t ask me on the criteria, I don’t know either, but I feel I have logic.

  4. Wish Zambia all the best. To me it really doesn’t how many people we sent there as long as long as we featured there.

    One Zambia. One Nation!!!!!!!

  5. #6, I agree. Why send so many athletes when they’re no sporting disciplines in Zambia where athletes can perform? Just accept the 12 that are there and hope for the best. Sometimes its best to send the best you can than 24 drunkards.

  6. best wishes to all members of the zambian team. i hope they have a wonderful time representing their country at this high-profile international event. enjoy!

  7. they should concentrate on sports more in Zambia and take more athletes to the Olympics.Although i am still proud of our small team good luck guys!!

  8. This thing of saying that there are no faciliites is true but shouldn’t really be used as an excuse. To run all you need are two legs. What we lack paZed is organisation and planning. Why can’t we have inter Komboni youth sports, this is where we will begin the process of talent identification. These youth could even run along the road all you need to do is organise the event. At he moment there are kids in Zed who could make it to 2012 and 2016, but only if we plan and organise. ZAAA are sitting idol waiting for kids to knock on their door and say, ‘I can run’. That is the wrong approach. Get out there and encourage the children to take up running.

  9. I for one was pleased with the line up, just having Zambia enter right in front of China was a symbolic move, and for those who are familiar with the Chinese way of thinking will agree that at least it showed how close this relationship is..am i wrong? in the olden days it would have been Mei guo.viva va Zambia!!

  10. #11 You need the best facilities obtaining the world over in order to achieve any success. It’s not about having two legs only. Running on the dusty roads in our townships cannot be compared to mastering a tartan track which we don’t have in this country.

  11. Correction #8

The number of athletes representing Zambia is only * and not the 12 that you’re talking about. On the other hand, we also have 7 officials bringing the total contigent to 15. We are not serious at all!

  12. The more athletes you send, the better the chances of winning medals. However, certain sports disciplines call for qualification such as football. Therefore, our soccer team could not be at the games because they were pipped by Ivory Coast.

  13. #16. Actually you need some form of qualification in any sport or event. To qualify for the 100m dash for example you need to have run under 12 seconds in the past one year. It is the same for all athletic distances as well as swimming events.

  14. #16, Chief – you have a point but it doesn’t matter, does it?

We have more potential to bring iPods and digital cameras than medals with this changanya participation.

  15. 13. Dont be childish. Entering before china my foot. What has this got to do with relations. You are the chap who would go out and wants to take a photo of yourself in a plane as proof that you actually flew. Inferior black muntu

  16. #13. In the Chinese alphabet Zambia appears last. China made the final entrance like all host countries do. It has nothing to do with reasons you are hallucinating about!

  17. Number 20, Zimbabwe came in way before Zambia. There was no alphabetical order involved in the procession. If there was, Zimbabwe should have been closest to China.

  18. Yakosa nkani. any way u hav 2 beat a certain time 4 u 2 kwalify 4 olympics even all africa game. not every tom n jerry has 2 participate. gud lak zambia

  19. #14 Chief

If you put Usain Bolt or Tyson Gay on grass they will still smoke everyone else in the world. The fact is that if you can run fast you will run fast on any surface. We use the fact that we don’t have a tartan track as an excuse.

As Zedians we are looking for excuses again as to why we are poor. Let’s not forget that the All Africa Games are only 3 years away, we need to put out house in order. Why should we wait for a tartan track?

  20. go zambia, wishing you all the best, you have made me proud for being at the Olympic Games, not all african countrys are at the game just knonw that.

  21. Our boxer Precious Makina has just been beaten by Silamu from China. The score was something like 21-4, but in reality the chap wasn’t beaten that badly. There was some suspect scoring, but in truth our man came off second best. Anyway, just pinning my hopes on Hastings, hopefully he does something spectacular.

  22. It is difficult to win medals at the Olympics in disciplines that involve judges such as boxing, diving etc. I always regard them as a waste of time and energy coz they always appear fixed to me.

  23. Hastings is just entering the ring, looks confident,

though the other guy seems to have the crowd on his side,Mongolia are just neighbours

  24. Hastings’s punches whether rather wild,

    quite brave of though,

but but but, poor foot work and lack of precision,

generally skill or the lack of it cost him,

    tough lack

  25. Hastings Was Nicknamed “THE HUMAN WINDMILL” LOL anyway at least he paticipated ba Zambia better luck next time. im still proud of him besides he fougth a better figther with all his heart but he still needs further development…

  26. i argree with u #34 we need to train these guyz in tha states not Tunisia… he lost his balnce in round 4 cause of the wrong footwork stance he was figthing like a street figther! this is boxing. anyway brave effort good figth by both boxers it was more entertaining than the other figths

  27. @ Da-Core,

absolutely,he seemed to have the wrong intent,

i think he was aiming for a KO,

now you and i know in the Welter division that’s gonna be hard,

especially at the olympics with only 4 rounds each 90 seconds,

unless your oppenent is silly to hang his head in your face,

really it’s all about skill, generalmanship etc

Hastings needs to develop a Jab,and ofcourse that movement n footwalk,

i remember Lennox never had one in the beginning but got one as he progressed

  28. i agree 37 totally it seemed he his suited for professional boxing than olympic boxing but still i blame part of it on his trainers cause they should have advised him that the countning of jabs at the olympics are diffrent. He laneded good punches but they were not counted so i think he wasnt suited to the counting system there he loooked like he wanted a knock out rather than score points. YEAH plus defintly he nids to develop a proper boxing stance plus jabs. Totally true #37 still he is a good boxer im sure all who watched it will agree.

  29. goodluck to you guys, we not the only ones that dont get medals, even well to do countries end up not getting any, the fact that we have representation is good enough for recognition.
be proud and make us proud….

  30. I was just looking at the record of Zane Jordan, for heaven’s sake, just who co-opted that kid into the team? His record is the worst among all the other swimmers in his August 14 heat.

No doubt Zane will be another Moussambani of Equatorial Guinea who created mirth with his choppy action at the Sydney Olympics, head held up water polo style, in stark contrast to the smooth efficiency of the fastest 100m freestyle competitors. His time of 1:52.72sec was the slowest ever 100m time and slower even than the 200m world record.

  32. #21, China has no alphabet. The sequence of appearance at the Olympic opening ceremony was based on the number of Chinese charater ‘strokes’ the first character the name of the participating country contains. At 16 strokes, Zambia (‘ZAN’ as our first character is known in Chinese) carries the most number of strokes for any country name in the games hence our last appearance soon after Australia (‘AU’) which carries 15 strokes. China for being the host came last, had nothing to do with then liking you bunch of muppets, ‘so lekani tuchawa twa mucaicai anikonde’. If this site could paster characters, I would show you how.

  33. To the Zambians who have made it to China 2008 olympics congratulations and may God guide you in every challange that you will be faced with.

Seeing the Zambian flag proudly raised in China made it the Perfect Birthday Gift Ever. Thank you!

  34. # 24 Whisper

In the first instance you explain away the need for proper facilities in our country but in the next breath you state that we need to prepare for the All Africa Games in 3 years. In what ways? I guess we must not be in any rush to put up any running track since we have abundant grass everywhere! Sports infrastructure development coupled with an effective Talent Identication Programme is what will reap results.

  35. Owns,
43 & 46 are not giving due props here. True Z has let its standards slip (remember Seoul ’88 with football and Barcelona ’92 with Matete) but that is because those who represent the athletes need an administrator who will treat Zambian athletes as precious.
Right now, the people behind the scenes in Z are making do with what they have but it’s next to nothing. I reckon that there should be more fundraiser events held to build facilites, train and educate Zambians in the sporting fields.
Admittedly, considering how things have deteriorated, I am proud just to see Z turn up, but it is a sign of the times. R

  36. Hi all. I watched the Zambian team enter the stadium on opening night with a tear in my eye. I was so proud of them. Have been watching closely. Hastings Bwalya lost 12:8. What a fantastic effort. He can hold his head high with a score like that. And Eli Mambwe’s match scores were 21-15 and 21-17. Very close indeed considering Zambia’s lack of sports training facilities and the fact his French opponent is a World & European championships competitor. Very good indeed! Be very proud of all your competitors Zambia. Shout your support and celebrate them when they return. To get to the olympics they must be the best in their country so they are absolute champions already. GO ZAMBIA !

  37. Wish you guys (the zambian team) all the best.I believe you can make it.
I reckon Linda you were watching channel 7.

I am looking forward to watching the Zambian team all the way.
The opening of the olympics was fabulous.

  38. We wish our team all the best.

But please note that poor sports and limited facilities will always lead to poor representation. other than that poor recreation will also make the fight against HIV and AIDS difficult. We must move in school and introduce other sports such as hockey, hand ball etc.
But as usual we have leader that have no initiative and only operates when the president has spoken. Puppet leadership…Sports is not only football, lets try other sports

  39. Reading the comments has made me realise why Zambia is the way it is. Because of Zambian attitudes. I mean im proud to see Zambia compete but I cant say Im satisfied with just that. We need a new attitude a winning mentality. A lot of you people may not know what a winning mentality is seeing as your from Zambia. Thats when you go the Games BELIVING you can win. Sometimes its not just enough turning up and making up the numbers. A lot of you are happy and satisfied to jus see them perform and I think that has transended down to the athletes. They dont belive they can win anything either. So have faith change your attitudes and try and change things rather than jus accpting them

  40. #53 Come on man the guy was born in zambia. If we start disowining our own just cause they lived in anouther country then theres somthing wrong. They guy wanted to represent us, represent you so give him a break. And he he did well getting third out of 8 people. Sure he didnt qualify but at least he tried. And at 17 he is only a kid. Hopefully in years to come he will get better and prove people like you wrong and birng home some medals as well as pride.

  41. I agree with those that have expressed the NEED for Zambia to invest more in our athletes and implement programs that can focus solely on cultivating potential athletes into sports men and women and from that to olympians. Man, when I look at ALL THE CATEGORIES of the summer games, I honestly cannot see why Zambia cannot be an aggressive force to reckon with in any of those events. Our schools seem to focus so much more on academics and football and that seems to be the end. People come one! Zambia is dense with athletes who just need a chance to grow with proper INTENSE training!

  42. On a happier note, Hasting Bwalya- seeing our beautiful flag being held high and the pride on your face as you walked into the arena was the highlight of my week! A small team + huge smiles and our flag = a huge heart-warming effect for all Zambians.
Let us challenge ourselves to cultivate more talent and skill for 2012!!!One Zambia, One Nation!

  43. Good luck to all selected participants and please strike for the best. I believe in every one of you. Zambia is full of talented athlete though our leaders do not support much in athletics but soccer, just be focus for your own future and give us amazing performance to great history. I was one of the best in track.

  44. Be proud, stand tall, you deserve a medal, just wait till 2012, there’ll be no stopping you.!!
