Mulongoti appointed as national campaign manager

The ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) has appointed Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services Mike Mulongoti as national campaign manager for Acting President, Rupiah Banda for the forthcoming presidential by-elections.

Mr. Mulongoti is also MMD chairman for elections.

The party has also appointed party chairman for information and publicity, Ben Tetamashimba as Mr. Banda’s election agent while party treasurer, Suresh Desai would be in charge of the finance committee of the national campaign committee.

MMD National Secretary Katele Kalumba said in a statement to ZANIS that Mr. Mbita Chitala would be in charge of administrative and logistical issues of the campaign.

Dr. Kalumba said this structure would be well coordinated between the campaign structures and organs in the party.

“I appeal to all our members and supporters to rise up to the occasion to give his honour, Mr. Rupiah Banda, MP, Acting President a landslide victory,” he said.

He look like he is a coward, but people take it like he is a man of diplomacy. his body language tell you that, he does not have it.. No vision, just following blindly.   49. The majority of the smaller political parties have acted responsibly by opting not to participate in the bye elections. ULP, FFD, APG & NGP have decided not to field candidates but support MMD. Their decision is commendable whereas their choice of preferred candidate is debatable. PF & UPND should undertake a serious & honest evaluation of their chances. SATA & HH should realise that contesting elections and always losing undermines their credibility and future chances of being elected. They should examine and compare their proposed polices with what the MMD is offering. They may find major similarities which may make them consider a joint ticket based on policies & not personal ambition

  50. Forming a packed between Sata and HH is a good idea, the only pbm is that Sata is untrustworth. He has done it several times and there is a fear that he can do it to HH as well. If you may remember correctly Sikota was warned by the Winas against forming a packed with Sata and it did not take long to prove them right. Sikota has been reduced to nothing because of the same at the moment. The only way a packed between these two guys would work is to let HH be the presidential candidate while Sata becomes the vice. Anythng beyond this is an acceptable. You see have to safe guard both camps so that no one loses at the end of the day. HH can never trick Sata but the old man is never straight.

  52. #50, Muna I want to agree with you, Sata is not trusted, he has chosen expedience over principle, that is why I was saying it easier for HH not to stand at all this time around than form a pact with Sata because both will not be in power. I do not care what power arrangements thay can agree to but one thing is clear Sata will want it all.   69. it is a sad state of affairs that the MMD would choose discredited members of the community to handle important issues like the election campaign. Mullongoti has been known for some time now to be a dishonest person. Starting from the president’s illness to the minister’s salary hikes he has proved to have thick skin. As for Mbita Chitala, LPM must be turning in his grave to see him get some clout. He is the same chap who threstened daily mail employees, has beeen making intimidating statements towards opposers of RB and was dropped as diplomat for making unguided statements that did not reflect the wishes of the president. Can we trust such people? Hell no!

    We need to first understand the driving force behind these two leaders, HH and SATA.
    These leaders are not driven primarily just to serve the people of Zambia, but to do so from plot #1.
    Because of that they are not ready to submit to each other and form a pact.
    Also, their policies are practically different; it is very difficult for HH to work with SATA. This is because SATA’s policies are highly dynamic and unpredictable, while HH would want a clear workable policy.
    These are the issues that will never make them work together in a pact. So calling for a pact for HH and SATA is not a profitable exercise.

When you say policies do u mean mangerial style or political Party policies as obtained in their Manifesto?, What I can say is that when people agree it does not matter so much what they have projected, people with different mangement styles can and have been able to work together.     I like your contribution. But you see, only PF cards would be interested in reading the policies of PF which are on paper.
    For us outsiders, we would want to understand PF policies by what we see PF do.
    This means that if PF will have good paper policies, but do other things on the ground, we will never identify them by their paper just like law is no law if it cant be applied.
    We are more concerned about their character than their paper. We want to see their policies from their action not from the library.

Sometimes zedians think like inkola, so slow in assimilating issues. Where in the world have you seen an opposition party implementing its programmes while its not in govt?.
    The policies enshrined in each of the manifestoes for the various parties can only be seen to work if they are sanctioned by the people who elect leaders. So if you want to prove that PF policies work or not, put them in govt, after all the wheel of change can be span any time within the five year period given for a govt mandate.

    You dont need to be in govt to exhit policy; in govt you carry out program under the guidance of your policies. Please understand, you dont need to get into power for people to know your policies. Only programs can wait for you to get into govt, not policy.
    May be we need to do a little reading here.
    I must repeat, policies are guidlines, not programs. Policies are close to or can easily be married to principles. If you want marry programs to projects. It is programs and projects which can wait for you to get into power, NOT policies.

    How many NGOs have put up excellent Porposals to their donors, papers of which they have thrown away after receiving funds.     They are driven by their desire to be president of zambia, that is the core issue about them.
    So how can they burry their core focus? if they were driven by service to people this would have come second. It is then that we would talk about them forming a pact.
    How can you burry you very goal for something else.

  100. Hello guys! Let us talk with knowledge. All the candidates qualify on the issue of citizenship. Here is ARTICLE 34, section (3):
    (3) A person shall be qualified to be a candidate for election as
    President if-
    (a) he is a Zambian citizen;
    (b) both his parents are Zambians by birth or descent;

  105. Except the 1990 elections when we genuinely voted, the rest have been rigged thanks to Xaviour/ VJ/ECZ. Now, until we know how to sort out this issue, forget about using your ‘power’ in November esp that VJ is still in it! I pity the Zambian voter – even when the evidence is there to petition a rigged election some corrupt/ cadre judge will rule against it as for the Chilanga constituency. So until these ECZ issues/ VJ’s machine/ politics of poverty and family trees and having a sound judicial system are sorted out, Zambians will always be disenfranchised or impotent when it comes to voting.

  122. I’m no fan of the MMD, but I think we need to wait and see what campaign teams the other parties put forward before we denounce the MMD’s campaign team. If it works for for them, why not? As someone already pointed out, basically the same team has seen them through twice!! Think about it!! That’s called strategy. They’re are not entering people in a beauty contest! They WANT TO WIN AN ELECTION!

Problem is none of our investigative and security services – from the Police, Task Force, Anti-Corruprtion Commission, Drug Enforecement Commission ZISS etc, have the nerve to act on their own initiative. They all wait to be “directed” by their appointing authority. And theirin lies the failure of the entire system! The ACC or the Task Fordce will not move unless they are told to do so by the President!!

I agree with the blogger who said as Zambians we are easily swayed to the wayside and let pertinent issues like the Post/Magande/Zambian Airways Saga go by….instead of focusing on Mulongoti and his personal deficiencies ,lets us focus on the collective deficiencies of the MMD and make a case as to why they should not be allowed to continue in office or vice-versa…

  128. #126 Government intervention is necessary at times to maintain the integrity of the financial markets and to protect jobs etc.That is not a bad thing neither is it unwelcome.

    However, in this case the linkage between the Post Newspaper (shareholders in Zambian Airways) and their support for Magande left a sour taste in most mouths.

    Why did Magande find it necessary to mitigate the Zambian Airways case with the Minister of Commerce who had rightly turned it to Cabinet for discussion?

    NACL is a parastatal company and the shares are held in trust for us the people, by the government.We therefore expect that the Minister should act in our best interests.
