Young people demand to take part in national affairs

Share

National Group for Emerging Leaders has challenged government to allow young people to get involved in the running of the country by appointing youths into government.

Organization Secretary General Stembridge Mwangala says young people have for a long time been struggling to get recognition by government.

Briefing the press in Lusaka today, Mr. Mwangala said young people should be given chance to participate in national affairs.

He pointed out that young people need to be incorporate into leadership and groomed to take up leadership.

Mr. Mwangala said it is worrying that young people are being discriminated against in terms of leadership.

He said they are many young people with the capacity to hold influential positions in government.

Mr. Mwangala noted that young people are facing many social challenges that include the ravages of HIV/AIDS and unemployment.

He questioned how long young people should wait before they are given chance to participate in national affairs.

And government says it is committed to supporting young people to become agents of positive change.

Sports, Youth and Child Development Deputy Minister Dr. Christopher Kalila says this is why the ministry of sports, youth and child development has placed the youth at the centre of all its work.

He added that there is need for youths to be proactive participants in shaping their future and that of the country.

Dr. Kalila was speaking when he officiated at the Dance For Life ceremony in Lusaka today.

Speaking earlier, Students Partnership World Zambia Country Director John Kalage said Dance for Life initiative aims at bringing HIV and AIDS education to young people through music and dance, inspiring them to take action to push back the epidemic.

Mr. Kalage said young people account for almost 45 percent of all new HIV infections with an estimated 5.5million young people living with HIV today.

He added that Students Partnership World Zambia recognizes then value of protecting our young people by imparting them with life skills.

And Zain Zambia Public Relations  and Corporate Affairs Manager Kennedy Mambwe said Zain was happy to be part of the Dance for Life initiative that brings together youths in 19 countries worldwide via satellite to celebrate the achievements of young people in pushing back HIV and AIDS.

He said youths form part of that group of people with plenty of potential that should be harnessed for the development of our continent.

  1. Danny’s brother and Dr. Mumba are still waiting in line to be recognised for the job well done for bootlicking. lets see whether you willalso be considered.

  2. Mumba is like Morgan Tsvingirai.MMD and the intelligence services will never ignore the risk he represents to our nation.having him around is a game of flattery. Too much MMD knows about his ways.I don’t see him getting anything from the MMD. To make matters worse, he has no political constituency to mount on.

  3. In Zambia so many NGO. Which young people are these now? Join political parties if you want your services to recoginised. We are recruiting members as UPND we need youth to come and form a strong youth wing who can be future MPs and minister in the coming Govt of HH the man.

  4. Imwe ba fi colour you have been hired by Lupiya Banda ukushinga abantu butter pa menso, I know you will soon be swimming in money because of your “initiative”, let us be more sincere of what we are doing. Zambia we shall cross

  5. But kwena abana na batumpa. How can a child demand to share powers with parents? What jobs can a grade 7 and 9 do in government. There is Ministry of youth, culture and education who create programs for youths. What kind of Civics are these children learning?
Mwebana, ala ba KK tried to empower youths with cadet, UNIP youth league what we got out of that where those “By-Air”. Elders suffered from those “thug” youths. NEVER again. Concentrate on studies and trade skills. And remember “ichilinganya ma p……”

  6. # 7 Kanabesa!!I wanted to knw how old you ar but from yo comment you sound like “old big papa” who doesnt want to see da youths taking up leadership!!but the fact of the matter is as long as we have these old guys they ‘ll continue to destroy da country coz they hav an outdated way of thinking which doesnt work well in 21st cntry!! Jst look at this from da time this old guy took office the kwacha is losing ground against other currencies!!!!!

  7. “National Group for Emerging Leaders has challenged government to allow young people to get involved in the running of the country by appointing youths into government.Organization Secretary General Stembridge Mwangala says young people have for a long time been struggling to get recognition by government.”Why must government allow youths. Youths have got a capability to form their own GRZ if they campaign carefully. Just as a reminder, the age (lower) limit for any Zambian Citizen to contest for President is 35 years of old.If my brain is correct,35 years old falls in the range of the term YOUTH. So, we just have work had a sell ourselves to form GRZ and thus no need to seek for allowance.

  8. “Briefing the press in Lusaka today, Mr. Mwangala said young people should be given chance to participate in national affairs.”

Who should give a CHANCE to us? We already have a “chance” according to the ‘theory of Probability’ in Mathematics. No need to cry for anything more.

“He pointed out that young people need to be incorporate into leadership and groomed to take up leadership.” Incorporation is welcome, but being groomed by terrible groomers is certainly not desirable.

See #5. your flag VILLAGE CONCEPT for proper details on us the youth.

  9. “Speaking earlier, Students Partnership World Zambia Country Director John Kalage said Dance for Life initiative aims at bringing HIV and AIDS education to young people through music and dance, inspiring them to take action to push back the epidemic.Mr. Kalage said young people account for almost 45 percent of all new HIV infections with an estimated 5.5million young people living with HIV today.”
These statistics are worrying unless there is a mistake in the reporting. How can we have “5.5million young people ” out of 11-12 million Zambians being infected with HIV?Also, how can “young people account for almost 45 percent of all new HIV infections”?
Zambian young people, let us be careful!

  10. Instead of cry for things that are straight-forward, above news, GRZ must rather consider educating all people especially the young people on the is real data that is on the ground on HIV numbers. Today when I was going to Church, I read nice message on the TRAM which gave a glimpse of HIV as in when it was first discovered, what numbers of HIV infected people have been recorded from 1985, Think 1990, 1995, 2000,2005, 2006 and the infection rate for 2008. This is/was great news.

  11. I thus ask relevant stakeholders to look into doing the Zambia at home in Zambia to educate people on these numbers. Also, information regarding ARV distribution and distribution-points were indicated in that TRAM message.

I recommend that the next generation of Cell-phones must be tailored to show messages on HIV numbers infected people in our country in particular and the world in general for the current Infected PEOPLE and most recent Infection HIV Rate.

This would help keep people constantly awake of their actions all day long.

  12. Zambian youth nobody is going to give you power on a silver platter you have to earn the right first.A young prize fighter does not get the boxing belt from an older one by virtue of the older one relinquishing it but does so by brutally knocking out the older finished guy.Thats how you announce that you have arrived. An inspiration to all of us is no other than Obama himself who fought vicious odds to claim the mantle. The world is moving on.To stay afoot we need to vigorously and continuously upgrade our political, economic, scientific, engineering and medical toolbox. The only way to do that is by churning out more capable youth who are knocking on the door of power not some useless chaps

  13. contd from #14…who are just good at forming NGOs to get a piece of the tax money. Peter Drucker the famous management guru says ‘the chief executive job of tomorrow shall include understanding of a host of new basic tools of mathematical and logical analysis, synthesis and measuring’.Now how many young Zambian managers do you know who can be seen to be incorporating such skills in their repertoire? Its no wonder you cant manage your mines on your own because to start with you do not have these skills. And for that matter you do not have the skills to lead a nation to prosperity. All you want is power but when we give it to you, you are either lost of intoxicated by it. Come on ba youth

  14. cont’d from #15. We want young people taking a different route from the older guys who are in power right now. We need to fit ourselves with basic analytical skills(its the only way we can use our own models to predict things like copper price etc). We need to develop managers because at the end of the day our enterprises determine our level of economic growth.Limited managers all over the show just limit the extent to which we can develop. We need more scientific research and documentation so we can find our own solutions to some problems. We need youth who know how to keep themselves alive under the pressure of this HIV and other hostilities in our place. IN SHORT, WE NEED A NEW BREED.

  15. #14 and 16 nzelu ni plan, mwalasa mukhulu. What you released is the only hope for Zambia. The GRZ is too much dependent on the Donor Community, the disgruntled youths are showing us that they are depending on the older grandfathers to form GRZ, the Kaponyas are depending on politicians to cheka ya mooba ntawi yama eletions both Tripartite- and Bye-elections, etc.

Let us learn to do things by ourselves and one our own. The current mindset of most Zambians is that of looking upto the next person for anything. This explains why GRZ Ministers are all looking upto President RB Banda to do anything including increasing BC for UNZA and other students. The AAMBO syndrome needs to be eradicated.

  16. Nzelu ni plan.

You seem to be a rare species on this blog. You have a lot of data worth learning from. Please do continue hitting LT with educative ideas. I have really wished we could have more contributors like you. If I may suggest, try to visit the Zambian economist blog, you will never be dissappointed with the quality of ideas being contributed there.

    Cheers.

  17. Am not one to bask in glory but do appreciate the consideration given by Maestro, Kamunyama and mossad to my comments. Kamunyama thanks for giving me the link that that high quality economics site.I am an engineer by profession and inclination but of late I have found myself more and more drawn to issues of development, particularly what makes some societies progress while others labor in poverty. This probably stems from the hopelessness and shame some of us feel as we go round the world mixing with people from more progressive societies. We want to see the rise of a thinking class in this country who can come up with a consistent vision and plan for the motherland.

  18. There’s no need to form an NGO for young leadership, just work hard! That’s my message to my fellow young ones craving for power.
Potential leadership knows no age barrier, only that in our culture, the young are traditionally subjected to the elderly. However, when the elders eventually get weary, they will have no choice but to pass on the sceptre to the young ones. These changes will happen inevitably and naturally.

  19. Which young people are being left out. I hope not Dr Cosmo Mumba and Caine Mweemba. these two chaps have no principles left in them whatsoever. Mweemba was a force to reckon with when he was at CBU and not the Caine that i see and read about today. As a young person the best one can do is to start farming and then expect to live better in future. Trading and supplying which most of us have turned to is on the way out more so with the economic melt down on the horizon or here already.

  20. zambians now you are working up; true the youths must be part of zambia’s developments, but how is this possible? we want this to be translated into a reality not just words!!!

  21. can someone who has got an idea about LUMWANA MINE IN SOLWEZI share with me why this mine is 100% owned by Equinox. A foreign mine on zambian soil? what policies have been contracted to make sure that zambians benefit from this mine?

  22. the youths have lost their salt.because there are too many youth NGOs at the beging of each year they find out what projects the donor community are willing to finance, the youth will change the objectives to suit the donor requirements hence changing there objectives every 6months, today its HIV/AIDS, toward elections its voters aparthy, rain season they want to empower young farmers, ask them if they have land themselves, they dont.all in all there is lack of seriousness, masebela.
most of those young pipo who make too much noise will be given brown envelops

  23. by the way they spend the whole year going to workshops, and sharing fuel/transport refunds and write reports yama workshops. they are duplicate of the leadership

  24. Intresting stuff guys. But Can we share ideas on specific fields like those mentioned by “Nzelu ni plan”. What can the youth of Zed do to show the current leaderdhip that they are fully enlighted and empowered to practically take on challenges of today’s social, economical, political and cultural demands.

  25. #28. O’pressed, there is no need to show anyone, especially the old politicians, this or that. Just be your own man as a young one or youth. Check out the American B. Obama and how he rose in steps ,and our own man HH who has from time to time defended and upheld the Zambian Constitution. President HH has done very well by participating in the Presidential By-election setting precedence in Zambia politics while the MMD Government want the Nation to forgo the election and has also been carrying out campaigns without any corruption or bribbery being pointed at him.
This is the way to go.

  26. #29 MH (your name too long, allow me)

The act of defending and the constitution and participating in the election is intiself a marketing tool whicha has allowed HH to be regonised and have his charactor checked and adopted by men youths as an inspiratioanl figure in politics. This is a good but this is on the political fora. What of other fields? ie engineers doctors, social workers, public administrators just to mention a few

  27. Should we continue to look up to the Chirwas, Fundangas, mwanakatwes for the next 44 yrs? Or should we present ourselves as a formidable generation with the capabilities and energys to equal our mentors, better still to surpass what they have offered so far and take it to another level.

  28. #30,#
    31. your flag Nakabalika, greetings. I have long been calling upon Prof. Chirwa to join the winning TEAM, the mighty UPND. He has nothing to lose, but everything to gain unlike his perceived MMD president presidential vacuum the man seems to be eying I think. All the Prof CC needs to do is hold his fire on trying to be President in 2011 but focus on joining an already existing promising TEAM. When the TEAM shall win say in 2011, the Prof can be given the re-modeled Ministry of Works, Supply and Transport so that he can put what he knows best into practice. We need the infrastructure and Prof. CC can play a serious part in this area.
Your #30 list is very much welcome too now.

  29. Youths you make up 45 percent of the population but you discreminate yourselves. You are the future of zed but you allow yourselves to be used by the old madalas who have already grown. Make a formidable force and support your fellow youth you cannot all be presidents just push hh in power and you will see things moving. But first work hard for yourself to sustain your family thats when you can think of taking care of the whole nation. If you get there when you are poor you will be full of temptetions which will cause corruption.

  30. #32 continued.

In short, we need everyone’s contribution among all Zambians even if it is a K100 one, practical experience, welcoming new and old members and party sympathisers. This is the new way of politics president HH has brought in the UPND which must trickle down to the entire Nation soon.

There is absolutely no need to let president HH do everything alone or with a select few from the UPND. Therefore, this is about what you and me can do in performing the person-to-person campaign for Zambia’s development come 2011 where all Zambians must participate in endorsing the UPND to form GRZ for the benefit of all.

  31. Go join political parties, you cannot be put in GRZ just becoz you claim to represent the youth, which youth are you representing? Political parties like PF, MMD and UPND should recruit the youth and re-ignite their youth movements as was with UNIP. These are the future leaders but for now there is a generation of chibuku drinkers in all parties, paid to cause havock duing elections and after elections.Could the youth of this beautiful nation … please stand up and be counted. Not only being used for fights, strikes, etc.

  32. #23,Umwina Kalale
How have I disappointed you my bro/sis.
Contact me at [email protected] so that we exchange ideas. I was not mentioned in the story line, so i don’t appreciate how I come in. At 41yrs, Iam really not a youth.
By the way I had put my name for adoption as MMD presidential candidate in the last eection. Whats wrong with me being offered a GRZ job, if actually offered? Am I not a Zambian?
    Regards.

  33. Demanding is one thing. Delivering is another. If the calibre of our youth is that of Siulapwa and Cosmo, then i think we have it all wrong. I would rather stick with FTJ than those two clowns, given a choice.

  34. Some young peolpe a very disappointing, they have ruined their chances by being puppert to other leaders, look at the behavour of Cosmo Mumba and Emannuel Tembo.
