President Rupiah Banda receives flowers from seven-year old Abigail Mwale at Chipata airport.

President Rupiah Banda has told the people of Eastern province that they did not waste their vote in the last presidential by-election.

He said he was humbled by the people of Chipata who looked after him very well when he retired from public service and politics in the early 1990s.

He said this when he arrived for a two day private visit to Chipata today. President Rupiah Banda has also advised Zambians to preoccupy themselves with activities that would promote poverty alleviation and food security in the country.

Speaking earlier, Minister of Foreign Affairs, Kabinga Pande said the people of Eastern province voted for Mr. Banda on merit.

Mr. Pande, who is also ruling Movement for Multiparty Democracy (MMD) vice national chairman, said President Banda was a national leader because he was accepted by all Zambians.

He has since challenged the people of Eastern province to assist President Banda govern the country constructively criticizing him and offering developmental solutions.

He lashed out at the opposition PF for calling for protests over high mealie meal prices saying demonstrations were not a solution to the problems the country was experiencing.

Mr. Pande urged Zambians to concentrate on working towards producing more food and a bumper harvest next harvest season.

And Eastern province minister, Isaac Banda said, whilst others were planning to demonstrate, people in his province were busy cultivating so that they could produce a lot of food next year.

Mr. Banda, who congratulated President Banda for his victory in the last presidential by-elections, promised that his province will offer full support to the current administration.

Meanwhile, ruling MMD Eastern province chairman, Kennedy Zulu said the province was happy with government’s Fertiliser Support Programme in the area.

Mr. Zulu however requested President Banda to consider asking for more relief food from the Office of the Vice President in order for all district in the province to benefit.

He also assured President Banda that the party was intact in the province, adding that the Provincial executive committee (PEC) would ensure that the area became a pillar for MMD.

President Banda is accompanied to Eastern province by Mr. Pande and two of his personal friends, Jacob Mwanza, who is former University of Zambia vice chancellor and Mr. Ephraim Mwenda.

The President was met on arrival at Chipata airport this morning by provincial minister, Isaac Banda and other senior government and MMD officials.

President Banda is expected back in Lusaka on Tuesday morning.

  1. how does he ask the peaple to concentrate on empty stomacks,it was not a very fair approach to a big problem such as this

  2. Well, we want you to honour your promises and not continued promises. For instance you promised fertiliser was going to be reduced to K50,000=00 but this is not the case, why? Am fed of people just talking and talking with nothfing to show for all that. As a zambian patience is fast running out.

  3. Yes Matworld, how was church? Ine lelo na lofwa…was at a party yesterday.
As for the story, I’m really tired of commenting on MMD and RB. It’s only a waste of time.

  4. PRESIDENT Rupiah Banda yesterday said he does not think that there has been a president in Zambia who has faced problems like him.

  5. #11,Thanks Chewe. Am fine and good… ;));));));;);;)**==**==**==**==**==I love the Zambian flag.. bought one at Ndola Airport last week as a souvenier**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==**==

  7. #12,Iwe anonymous,RB made me laugh when he said that there has never been a president who faced problems like him. He mentioned the global financial crisis, low copper prices, high mealie meal prices. That man iwe akafileka kwati Musharaf ka.Ala kukosa bu president.Him is just complaining! Just work thats what you wanted.

  8. WHAT A WAY TO SPOIL A SUNDAY WITH A BLOG ABOUT RB TOURING OR UNDERTAKING A PRIVATE VISIT TO CHIPATA. WORST OFF THE TOPIC SHOWS RB WITH HIS VICE GOERGE WHO TALKS AS THOUGH HE HAS JUST LEARNT THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE OR IN SLOW MOTION. GEORGE ENA ICHISUNGU CHAKWE SOUNDS LIKE ONE OF THOSE EDUCATED IN THE VILLAGE. HOWEVER THE GUY WAS EDUCATED IN LAUNSHYA.
RB NEVER CEASES TO AMUSE ME, HE CAN EVEN AFFORD PRIVATE VISITS IN THE FACE OF ALL THIS ECONOMIC HARD TIMES THE COUNTRY WILL OR IS EXPERIENCING. RB WAS A WASTE OF VOTES FOR ALL WHO VOTED FOR HIM. HE EVEN KNOWS IT HIMSELF.

  9. Of course we wasted our vote. What have you done so far apart from increasing your salary and those of your fellow theives. Very smart indeed before the elections you refuse to sign the bill, but after the elections you the same mon….key signs the bill. fo..ol

What a kateka, ubu bi, ulenda ko no mukashi obe lyonse ku lamu shafye, baka ku sompola kuli Sata

  10. Iwe #19 Give us a break, it seems as though this Global Economy has only effected Zambia, cause in some countries like here in Denmark the prices of staple food is still the same and as a matter of fact even the price of fuel has gone down. What has the Global Economy got to do with the prices of mealie meal when maize that we us to produce mealie meal is a local product. But is really si..lly and it just shows that the old qua..ck does not understand Economics. He is a behaving like a parrot, just repeating what others say.

  11. I sign off here, continue talking about akhulu mbuno. I have to start ironing my clothes and after that i have to prepare my supper. Ubushimbe mwe lesa twafweni twapapata!

  12. uyu RB,alemona kwati to be president ni chilling pa state house and moving around in the nice presidential merc..nw he is complaining ati there has never been a president who has encountered such problems as him in zed.he wanted the seat by all means including rigging…nw he has it let him solve the problems…dnt complain iwe RB..jst shut up and seat down do the job.ala sha.

  13. Akhulu Mpuno will never cease to amaze us as long as he rules us for his term of tree years but come 2011, we will hire a tractor to send back to the farm.

#28, Chwewe, I agree with you, ubushimbe nabuchilamo mwandini. How can one marry when the economy is biting?

Guys, with effect from now, am changing my name to “Zadok” .

  14. RB was not picked by LPM on merit but as reward for campaigning for his second term. I want the Zedians to know that RB is a good for nothing fellow who has no intellectual stamina to lead Zambia into prosperity. May God give us a Moses in 2011 :d/:o

  15. I changed my name from Serious Investor to Zadok for reasons that: am fed up with government full of jokers, who only enrich themselves.

    Am tired imwe bantu!!!

  18. i was hoping to return to zed nxt year..bt ba RB isnt even giving me hope th@ my beloved country wil move forward with him being charge..this man is jst complaining and nt evn offfering solutions..i intended to marry soon bt nw i guess i hav to hold on on those plans, kuti walalika umwana wabena insala elo pabulo ni panse,yaya..bt zed naikosa,#28 chewe walasa.

  19. THEY WASTED THEIR VOTE BIG TIME ON A PIECE OF RUBBISH. RB WHAT DO YOU RECKON WOULD HAPPEN WHEN YOU BRIBE FOREVER ECONOMICALLY DEPRIVED CITIZENS. ITS COMMON SENSE THAT THEY WILL WASTE THEIR VOTE ON THE BRIBING RUBBISH INDIVIDUAL. I LOVE MY COUNTRY AND MY PEOPLE. BUT I DON’T LOVE THE FACT THAT IT IS EVER BEING RULED BY A BUNCH OF CROOKS WHO HAVE NOTHING TO OFFER TO THE PEOPLE ALL THE TIME. ZAMBIA DESERVES BETTER LEADERS AS OPPOSED TO THE GABBAGE WE KEEP RECYCLING ALL THE TIME. YOU GUYS ARE FIT FOR RUBBISH PITS.

  20. whose daughter is that handing over flowers…mwebantu tamwakwata umwenso…tunkonfwako at 2nd wife… careful…pule style

  21. #34,its not that. Me am a very energetic young man. Very strong indeed, when i impregnant a lady she can give birth in two weeks time due to the faster rate at which the pregnance would be growing! One of the strongest men! Waumfwa!

  24. SO IN YOUR HEAD RB IF YOU CAME AT A DIFFICULT ECONOMIC TIME ONE OF THE SOLUTIONS IS TO INCREASE YOUR SALARIES? WHAT ABOUT THE MORE THAN 90% OF THE POLPULATION WHO DO NOT WORK AND ARE DYING OF STURVATION? YOU ARE VERY DULL. THERES NOTHING IN YOUR HEAD, BWANA.

  25. Father Christmas thinks they always do. I remember them being the only province to give UNIP a vote in 1991.

    Ho Ho Ho!

  26. Cutey
    ati shani
Lets talk about the president’s wife. Its seems RB is not spending alot of time with his wife. A wife plays an important role when it comes to advice and wisdom. Am sure she can say apa amuna banga asembe mwachita so na so…………
    what do you say?

  27. #52, I think Thandiwe needs a lot of support and glooming. Its not easy if you were brought up as a rural girl… so many women were brought up like that. Am from Eastern province and I can stand in Thandie’s shoes. She was School Teacher who lived near RB’s farm. After RBs wife died. RB fell for this young lady. She has been so inspirational as she looked after RB’s mother up to when they moved to Lusaka when LPM ‘remembered’ RB. She is a nice humble young lady. Hoping she will come up gloomed soon. Remember ‘Vera ‘had to be taught English at Statehouse?. Then the ‘CREAMS’–‘AMBI’ started working.. =d>=d>=d>=d>:x:x

  28. #52,Thandiwe has Twin kids’ from RB, I think at the moment its not easy for her to tell RB that ‘sembe mwachita so and so’.. but I think with time she will pick up. She actually needs Internatioonal ‘Alangizi’ like you and me …. What do you think Sarah Jones?????? :d/:d/:d/:d/**==**==**==**==**===d>=d>

  29. #53
I think she needs alot of glooming from Maureen, am sure she knows better. Thandiwe seems to be a very nice lady but is she intelligent?
I think given the chance she can ameze us all.

You who was in Zambia recently, how is the credit crunch affecting kicthen parties?

  30. #54
Spot on! International alangizi, ha ha ha lol!

Having twins is not an excuse. In Zambia you have the pleasure of having maids and other helpers. At the moment we need her to do the magic on RB’s brain. She is capable of doing the pillow talking untill electricity starts running in our Presidents brain.

  31. what is doing taking his personal friends on taxpayers money, Mwanza and Mwenda? Are they going grab land in thier home province now?

  32. #52,#53,I did not have a have to attend any kitchen party as I was busy with on site supervision with 2 of the properties am developing in Zambia.I was just too fed up with different reports.. one said the properties were on window level others said still at foundation levels.etc. I don’t think Maureen will help her a lot. She looked down upon her as a nothing .. remember she shunned her during the funeral?? and so I hear. Besides that I believe those who can afford kitchen parties are still going on their businesses. Credit crunch does not mean anything much to them as long as ‘nshima is on the table for the day’ tomorrow looks after itself.. :-?:-?**==**==**==**==**==**==**==

  33. It was a waste of votes for the pipo in Chipata to put RB in office,It is time for change in Zambia. Old politicians have taken this country no where. 2011 no Sata,no HH,no Nevers Mumba,no Rb and no current MPs. We need new leaders from Parliament to President

  34. Nine Chale, the spirit of defilement is haunting you.Becarefull, you are admiring akamwane, ati i wish she was my daughter.Hahaha, iwe balakaka. Cutey and Sarah Jones, lekeni gero ya kwa RB ninshi kanshi? If you dont stop,i will marry both of you!

  35. #52, pillow talk depends on who you are talking to. RB is a nice fella but I believe he is on this post to fulfil his legacy and so I quote him.. :-w:-w:-w
Thandiwe might improve, lets give her time ,3 months maybe….
I havent gone to sleep yet. Still holding my red wine glass to keep me going. Hubby is sleeping….|-)|-)|-)|-)|-)|-)|-)|-)|-)

  36. :oAwe ba Chewe naimweee! Not ati defilement. The little girl is just cute and I wish I had one like her, that’s all. :d

Building house ka. Mwasebeza abena Chipata. (am half Bemba) nshaniko tu koswe (joke).
Meself am only waiting for the right time to start building coz with this hunger someone can just chew your money. I was last in Zambia in sept.
When people say that Ba Maureen is very proud I hardly believe that but with what you have said I can start to believe it.

  38. #66, Iam a very busy lady. I have built a house for my mother which is awaiting sollar energy as it is right up in the village. The second building is for the kids when they grow up so that when they visit Zambia they don’t get so disillusioned with the culture shock.
Its mbeba and not koswe. Koswe lives in the houses, mbeba lives in the bush. you have to dig deep for them. I have never tasted any for the past 20 years. I enjoyed Inswa. plenty of them.. and ripe sweet Zambian Mangoes are in season.. coudn’t get enough of them.. :d/:d/:d/:d/**==**==**==**==**==**==

  39. #63
If only RB can think faster things will improve in Zambia. I for one has not given up on returning to Zambia from the diaspora. I love Zambia so much and seeing what is happenning my heart bleeds. My hope is in Thandiwe. Us women take pride in our husbands when they are doing fine and we try by all means to do what we can to make things better.
Am just eyeing my red wine as it is only 4pm here. How many have you had so far or is it only one. ~o)

  40. Ba Nine Chale,i know you cant do that. You are 1 of the great guys here ,just wanted to joke with you! .Cutey, you are even taking some red wine.while, you must be a great woman.Let me sign off i can die here.

  41. SJ, talk to you tomorrow, am going to sleep now….

With the issue of people chewing the money ..its a common thing.. I just had to risk it or it wasn’t going to be started at all, whilst time is passing by. I have lost a lot and thats why I had to go and see for my self…its not easy… :-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?:-?**==**==**==**==

  42. #70
Thanks for the correction. I thought Koswe is Mbeba. You know talk to you made start cooking nyemba alo shalungula. Have to start again.

My kids were not in a culture when I took them home because I had prepared them mentally befor the visit but they were speechless with most things but they still called it home. I will groom one of my kids to be president. Am dead serious for I have dream (joke)

  43. Is it any wonder that class of 1964 are still material of zambias political picture today when all we waste time on is complain and comment on personalities. When KK said we are future leaders he meant the lot us of who benefited from post independence education, and parastatal jobs.
Look at the calibre of bloggers here? Shame on us!!! class of 1964 will rule come 2011.

  44. Class of 1964 you must be joking or out your mind. 2011 means Change from Parliament to President. New leadership, New ideas. Old leadership is the Road to No where.

  45. In Zambia, its like there is a wind of change all the time ka. You guys waste a lot of time exposing your ignorance on Lusaka times. Please understand issues before you say anything. Zambia is not an island, therefore any financial crisis involving the world will definitely at some point touch zambia ok.

  46. Goodmorning Sarah Jones, how did you manage to have nyemba? I don’t start blogging before attending to house chores including cooking. kuti walungusha imuku inga? kuti ba kupisha ka! elo kalee nalyilepo nyemba. Are sure its not beans?:-?

    ****dreams do become true…..8-}8-}8-}8-}8-}8-}8-}8-}8-}8-}8-}

  47. Cutey

How long have you been sleeping? 3hrs. and you are back on the blog. You have really made me laugh.
I buy it from the local supermarket. I just bought it as a snack and I was just cooking it for meself.

  48. #71, Sarah Jones,
I have given up returning to Zambia for good. Not until duo citizenship returns to Zedi that is if it happens. For now my present citizenship is my lifeline…I love it to bits. You should see peoples faces when they look at my passport with disbelief whenever I travel…. :x:x:x:x:x:-?:-?:-?

  49. Sarah Jones you are right, I did not sleep much last night. Had too much red wine.. almost one and a half bottles..(joke)
comeon its just 0730 AM here

  50. #82-84 i like your enthusiasm. What steps are you taking to ensure that the wind of changes come to pass remember we only have roughly about 1051 days before the 2011 elections. He who fails to plan, plans to fail. The mistake we as Zambians make is being enthusiatic in the last 30-60 days before the elections & thinking miracles will happen. Those advocating for change need to start now, there is a lot of ground work, strategies needed. The ruling Govt i am sure also has their plans, wait and see how they will dish out handouts before elections & how instant development will take place in 2011. Those advocating for change and all the opposition parties the time is now for serious groundwork.

  51. #90 We all should take the blame for letting the Country sink to where we are, There has been no real opposition after KK was defeated all the opposition are disgruntled ex- MMD or other parties people on grassroots have just followed blindly. By the way people are too scared to stand up for what is right, Real leaders fear God not what man can do to them. # 90 I ask you or encourage your friends to run for Parliament 2011

  52. By the way, it appears to me that Zambians Missions abroad have become dumping grounds for failures. How on earth do you get chaps like Ben kangwa, Newstead Zimba all at the Zambian Mission in US?? No wonder we are in sh*t.

  53. Mrs Kones said MPs were not opposed to paying taxes on their allowances.”If paying taxes shall improve the economy and the well being of the people, who are we not to heed the call of the masses?” she asked. source eastandard.net
An example of how other citizens are exercising their rights and putting their MP’s underpressure.

  54. #93 my vocation is not to run for MP, i believe there are many capable Zambians who have that genuine vocation & would do wonders for our country. My vocation is empowering Zambians & making them realize that we have so much power to make our country be what we want & need it to be by understanding our civic rights & exercising them so that the govt of the day is put under pressure & on their feet to perform.I am acuatly an independent and do not belong to any party.I am willing to support any party that is a performer & can put Zambia amongst the top ten developed countries in the world whether MMD,PF,UPND,HP etc.The key is making Zambians aware of their civic rights & putting the Govt on

  55. contd, and putting the Govt of the day on their feet by constantly monitoring and evaluating their performance. This relates to any party that can come into power, Zambians should never be taken for granted. Civic education is a lot of work and requires a lot of planning and hard work for the different ventures to be put in place to facilitate this kind of education.

  56. Valentine Strasser’s life is a typical case of grace to grass. The former Sierra Leonean president is now broke and is accommodated by his mother.Strasser, 41, has few options. He spends most of his time drinking palm wine at a roadside shack with the ‘down trodden’. Sometimes the people who once sang his praises in supplication, jeer and throw stones at him.The army captain ruled Sierra Leone for four years from 1992-1996 and became an ex-president before he reached 30. His is a story of rags to riches and back to rags.

  57. contd, The chic look he cultivated with stylish designer outfits and sunglasses he loved so much during his days in power have been replaced with shaggy, weather-beaten second-hand clothes. He is no better than the village clown or drunkard source eastandard.net. This is what happens in Africa when citizens do not know their rights and allow every jim and Jack in power. We need to seriously vet our leaders.

  58. Pillow talk “no” not with RB, he sleeps day and night. Has no time to think ( spends most of his time dreaming ) [-(8-|

  59. Zambians tighten your belts because the worst is coming by next year a bag of meal mealie will be 100pin .We told u vote pa pabwato but went to vote on the sleeping person.Brace ur selfs umlelapila.

  60. February 2009 economies like Zambia will breakdown,People prepare for the worst,Your plane ticket to go to Zambia from New York will cost you $8,000.00 economy round trip

  61. #103. musange
How about you, what time do you sleep and work up?
Do you think you have to be president to make contribution to this country?
Do you think the president should grow food, drag to work the many lazy zambians who just drink and do nothing in compounds?
Do you think he should decide the prices of copper on the international market.
What have you, yourself, contributed to Zambia or to the world?
If Bill Gates was like you, he would have waited for his president to develop his software for him.
You might say his govt provided enabling environment; well, was it only for him? How many americans were in his shoes but never achieved what he did? It is about attitude.

  62. #106 Yo guy has confessed that he has faced more and difficult problems than past presidents. what iam humbly asking him to do is simply to provide leadership period. You dont probably know how much iam paying to the Government as PAYE.You and me may have a positive attitude but at the end of the day and with bad leaders you are trying to defend “kaya”

  63. Let’s not pretend, systems have to work for citizens to take advantage of them. The USA has systems that’s why their GDP is not like ours. There is accountability, don’t just tell people to work hard when there are no proper systems, by the way Zambians are hard workers how come when they are abroad things change. Let us be real and not just defend bad governance for the sake of defending it.

  64. #107. musange,
Urging our leaders to find solutions and work hard is a positive step. But I do not agree that you insult those in authority when you have not even found out what they are doing. Will you insult every leader who comes to power?
Stating that RB has come at one of the worst times is true. When factors beyond the nation aftect your country, you are in a worse off situation that when you are faced with internal factors.
RB admitting that there are problem is a positive step to having solutions. Even america at the moment has admitted they have the worst crisis in more than 60 years. That implies Obama has come at the worst time in 60 years. So what’s wrong with acknowledging?

  65. Let people feel free to express themselves on these blogs,it’s the beginning of solutions & it is the only freedom of expression they have in Zambia because freedom of speech has been denied. In developed countries individuals even demonstrate alone in public, but in Zambia citizens have been intimidated. Please do not misrepresent the peaceful demonstrations by calling them riots and bringing a bad image. What the Govt should be against is violent demos but as for peaceful demos they should have already given a green light. But they are against everything that is why zambians feel like their rights are not being respected ,and they cannot allow their rights to be trampled upon.

  66. They need to communicate what they are doing instead of keeping quite at least Obama is communicating how he will resolve the USA problems resulting from the Economic Global crisis and people have confidence in him and in his team.

  67. #110. New Zambia,
What you have said is very interesting. You say that the govt should only be against violent demos not peaceful ones.
Now, I have a question for you. Do we have any record anywhere in the world where people have told govt they want a ‘violent’ demo?
I can assure you that anyone anywhere will always project a peaceful demo, but these are the same that sometimes generate into violent demos.
How do you tell that a demo being asked for is gona be violent?
You can tell if the peaceful demo is being requested violently or with a violent attitude.
I believe in providing alternative solutions and not simple demos. what substance are you offering apart from a call for demos?

  68. Do you understand that demos are part of the civic rights of citizens. Why is the Govt panicking let the people demo among other activities. If they become violent let the law take it’s course. Why is the Govt panicking, let people exercise their rights that is true democracy.

  69. #113. New Zambia.
The govt has a duty not only to develop the country politically but also safeguard peace and security.
If I were a leader in govt I would not do what you suggest; let people riot then let the law take its course? I say NO to such.
What your saying is like telling the security forces to say allow our neighbours to invade us, then we react.
Or as a national team coach to say that let our opponents score 2 goals then we will come from behind and hummer the 3 gaols to 2.
That type of strategy does not revolve around good leadership principles.
By saying this I do not mean that there are no problems in the country, neither do I say the govt is delivering , No.

  70. contd,What should go hand in hand with the peaceful demos are :
1.The Mp’s and leaders need to reduce the salaries they have just raised and scrap off all allowances because they are paid salaries to work . They need to reduce their income to what the suffering zambian is getting so that they understand the situation on the ground.
    2. The MP’s and all Govt leaders need to stop going abroad for medical treatment and experience what the common man is facing in the dilapidated Hospitals. They also should stop sending their children abroad for education, they need to face the Zambian education system, they need to lead by example.

  71. 3. Competent, performing people with proven track records need to be manage the resources of this country and turn around Zambia’s economy in the midst of the global economic crisis just like developed countries are putting measures.
    4. The wealth of Zambia which has been missapropriated to be returned.
5 Provide a conducive environment to receive feedback from the Zambian citizens which is free of intimidation or bootlicking on how the Govt is performing.

  72. What do you understand by freedom of speech. If you are so concerned about violent demos why haven’t you put measures in the past to educate Zambians about their civic rights and how to expess them peacefully this is supposed to be part of the education curriculum and you should have been encouraging NGO’s, churches to educate the Zambian citizen. But it seems thriving on the people’s ignorance has been taken advantage of.Ttake steps in educating the Zambian citizens on their civic rights with a genuine heart then they will be no need of panicking.

  73. I voted RB.I’m now regreting because i have realised that my vote was wasted. Who is he to tell us that our votes were no wasted.

  74. we are so unfortunate in zambia that of all pipo,RB is our president.jst like #103 has said,he is ever asleep.i wish i could denounce my citizenship.

  75. IF WE DID NOT WASTE OUR VOTERS, THEN FUFILL THE PROMISES WHICH YOU PROMISED. IT IS THE TIME TO SHOW UP YOUR FRUITS NOT YOUR TRUE COLOURS 🙂

  76. How many of you have ever voted in Zambia? How many of you that are abroad frequently travel back to Zambia and know what is actually happening, have done something about helping alleviate people’s poverty, rather than going by what you read on LT and what bululus tell you when you call home and email? Just a few questions.
