Zambia Sugar says no Jobs will be lost

Share

Management at Zambia Sugar PLC in Mazabuka has dispelled rumours that thousands of workers are threatened with massive job losses following the low production levels recorded coupled with the global financial crunch.

But Corporate Affairs Manager, Love Sievu told ZANIS in Mazabuka today, the company will instead create more job opportunities for local people following the expansion project whose implementation is within schedule.

He also said the awarding of a contract to a South African Company, Barlow World Logistics will not result in job losses.

Mr Sievu said the staff from Logistics that may not be taken on by Barlow World Logistic will be retained to the sugar company.

National Union of Plantation and Agricultural Workers, Kalilamukwenda Mudenda also confirmed that no employee will lose a job at Zambia Sugar Plc

Mr Mudenda said Management at Zambia Sugar assured the union that the staff that will not be taken by Barlow world logistic will be maintained by Zambia Sugar.

Mr Sievu also stated that reports suggesting that the company has recorded low sugar production are not true because currently the company has 40,000 metric tonnes in excess of sugar for domestic and industrial consumption.

He said an additional 15,000 metric tonnes will be produced in March next year at the commencement of the crushing season.

Mr Sievu said the failure by the company to harvest sugarcane from the 500 hectares of farmland should not cause speculation that the country will face another shortage of the commodity because the current stocks are enough to cater for all the consumers.

”The cane that has not been harvested will not be destroyed because it is only here in Zambia where we harvest it within Nine months but in our neighbours in South Africa, they harvest within 2 years. This should cause panic because we are going to crush the same cane that has not been harvested next year,” explained Sievu.

And Mr Sievu has disclosed that next year the company will start producing power self sufficiently to run the factory and irrigation facilities.

He said 30 mega watts will be produced per hour adding that, consumption for ZESCO power will be lessened.

Anxiety of being retrenched has gripped Security officers and staff from the Logistical section under the Marketing department following the awarding of a contract to Barlow World Logistics, a South African Company to run the section.

Some impeccable sources at the Security and Logistics sections told ZANIS in Mazabuka information they obtained from the human resource department has indicated that more retrenchments especially from Logistics section from Ndola, Lusaka and head office in Mazabuka are expected.

  1. Sweet thang – I’m lucky I finally got one.

Love Sievu is lying. I am going to save this story and post it back in 3 months when the employees are retrenched and we have a shortage of sugar.

  2. Dear Maestro Hhehhehhehhe

    Where is HH?
Why is it that he only exist when its time for elections.

I cannot hide you I really wanted HH to bring change pa Zed,but its like he will never do that.
He is not perfoming the duties of the opposition party.Iam sure you have done civics before.
One duty of the opposition is to oppose the govt when they are not doing the right thing.
Now that HH is quiet, tells me alot about him.
its like all is well with him even when Zambians needs help from him.
I have never heard him say anything about the economic crisis zed is facing. Is it because he thinks its okay or what? to tell you the truth HH has really disapointed me.

  3. #9 check out below comment in the Fuel thread:
Look at China, and even India, they do not have noise useless noise makers like the Undereducate but they are doing very well in their economy. What we need are solutions to problems.
China and india have demonstrated that it is not the foreigners who will bring solutions to develop their countries but the indeginous people of those two respective countries. The FDI for China and India respectively are 10% and 15%. In Zambia, a foreign can own even upto 100% of the business without paying tax also – I stand to be corrected on this one though.
    So, if HH is thinking about solutions this is best way. =;

Good Zambia Suger PLC, but we know that you have been making huge profits also even way ahead of your projected figures.

Anyhow, we need committed companies like you to help the current GRZ to move on even upto 2011 when we will seek to get a more organised party to form GRZ.

  5. Where has everybody gone? Sony Ericsson, Baby C, Cutey, Matworld, Chewizo, Rashid Jones…
mwanisiya neka! Waaah, waaah, waaah :((:((:((:((

  6. “Museveni accuses Africans of taking too many holidays, something he said was fine for workers in wealthy nations, but was inhibiting development in Africa”.

    Amen to that!!!

  7. They always start by saying that no jobs will be lost and while we are still elated that we will remain in employment for a few more days, then they drop the bombshell saying that they have to downsize due to this or that which was unforeseen. I still remember that Magande told us that Zambia would not be affected by the rising food prices and look where we are now.

    Matworld-Nice Guy
A bright and good morning to you. Did you receive the snacks I sent (mbeba, inswa and sontwa)?

    Ba Moze
Good morning to you too. Have a great day

    Everybody else
    God loves you. Am out

  8. #9 Matworld-Nice guy! Good Observation on HH. I have questioned HH & his faithful supporters B4 on the same thing. The only time you hear UPND(Mp’s)talk is when they choose to differ with Mr.Sata. Even if HH is still licking his wounds and re-strategising,he still needs to comment on the prevailing situation pa Zed.He needs to be the voice of the voiceless to win them over since he aspires to serve them. Retrenchments in the Mines, Zambia Sugar etc being done or looming. He needs to be in touch with the pipo & their Suffering.

  9. Godfrey Miyanda will misteriously re-surface in 2011 on 20th August to announce that he will stand as a presidential candidate. Zambia is full of comedians who can make a name in the seies ” Zambia One Comedy”. people are suffering, maize meal prices up!No Jobs, Kwacha is slidding yet so many of these chancers dont speak for us. BY, Adulterous Nawakwi, Saki, Nevers Sekwila Mumba etc. lets not give these a chance anymore. They make MMD think all is ok. ba Sata continue to speak for us. U have been a true great Leader. 😕

  10. lets hope there wont be a change of statements.pa zed anyone can say anything and change statement at any time.its not good, stick to your plans tulemonako action….

  11. WHAT IS WRONG WITH THESE PEOPLE, TODAY THEY SAY JOBS ARE SAFE, THEN THE OTHER DAY 200 PEOPLE LOSE THEIR JOBS. PEOPLE SHOULD LEARN TO SAY THE TRUTH. THEY DONT KNOW WHAT IT MEANS TO LOSE A JOB. 20% OF THE POPULATION HAVE ALL THE FOODS WHILE THE 80% SIT DOWN AND QUITELY STARVE OH MY GOD IT BECAUSE THERE IS NOT ENOUGH LOVE WITHOUT JESUS. WHEN YOU GO INTO YOUR BED TONIGHT AND WHEN YOU CLOSE AND LOCK ALL THE DOORS, JUST THINK OF THOSE OUT IN THE COLD AND DARK. LORD HELP US.

  12. White spoon sugar, so the demand is going down, mmmmmmmmm.I miss the sweetness of my mother land cane sugar. Nzimbe, mujuwa ichasali, some of these countries their sugar is from the roots. Kanshi ni 4 spoons before you can taste the sweet. Hope those jobs are saved. I always carry atleast 4kg sugar when coming back from my holiday in Zambia. Pray for those jobs, its hard to live without.

  13. Remember what happenend to Zambia Airways / UBZ / Meridien Bank the list is endless,……the Nation was told that all jobs were safe by a smartly dressed guy on TV. Days later in all cases jobs were lost, or rather more starkly put, the companies folded taking the jobs with them. At Spoon Sugar, the company may survive, but I would be very careful to take the smart guys on TV who make the announcements. For those with options, they may do well to consider them seriously.
