National Milling Company has announced a major reduction in mealie-meal prices across the country.

Company Managing Director, Peter Cottan, says the new prices with a minimum of eight thousand kwacha reduction, will be effected on wednesday.

He said at a press briefing in Lusaka that a 25 Kilogramme bag of breakfast mealie meal will now be selling at K45,000 while roller meal will be selling at K35,000.

Mr. Cottan said on the copperbelt breakfast mealie-meal will be selling at K49,500.

Roller meal will be sold at thirty nine thousand kwacha per twenty-five kilogram bag.

Mr. Cottan said in the other outlying areas breakfast will be selling at K52,500 while roller meal will be selling at K42,500.

He attributed the variation in prices to transport costs.

Mr. Cottan said the company has reduced the prices of the staple food following governments agreement to subsidise maize by 100 percent.

  1. Big up Ras Rated, a happy New Year to you, bro.
Big up Mr. Cottan too, for announcing the first good news I’ve read from Zed today.

  3. # 45 pin is 6.20 pounds. Okey, that great! but how many people can still afford that 45pin without “kongole milyango, na vigololo muchibuku?

  4. Good news all in all, but it needs re-inforcement by Zet Pee to ensure all the vandors comply. The argument vendors always use is that they are still selling old stock..so, the 45 pin will only be realised after 3 months or so.

  5. Nomba, iyo yine transport cost, a barrel of oil is less than 45 dollars, but pa Zed, my sister tells me is 1.20 dollars. Cant get figures right. Criticles Mwansa must or Musokotwane-voodonomics must explain mwe!Twachula pafula!!!

  6. we need more of peter cottans in zed less of the Teta Mashabes and stuff like that, whose mind is the belly.hell know,I wonder why in Zed we always want to appoint old leaders when God in the bible used to appoint young men, strong and handsome, alwaz remember that a face tells a tale.

  8. Chewe may I remind you, i have turned 23 today you could with provocating me another day. Age should go hand in hand with your mental judgement and what you rant about. Clearly in your case age is winning unanimously and how sad, please talk about the article Sir and not me.
Terminally incoherent rants will come back bouncing harder in your yard. Such have no room in these blogs. Let them stay in your household that is if you are fortune to have any (judging from your actions I strongly doubt this)

  9. Give praise to the ryt pipo u shameless hypocrites. When price goes up, its r b to blame en u call him all sorts of names, now there is reduction on m/meal coz of gvt subsdised f r a maize and its cottan who has bcome an angel. If sata was prsdnt now. The story wud be “u see he is ored working he is reducing fuel en m/meal” i can see r b doing more by the end of the year. He has a fatherly heart en is so down to earth. Well done r b and your team,

  10. Prices of mealie meals being reduced is a small step in the right direction. Creating employment, reducing poverty! Investments in Primary schools, Hospitals are more long time visions this government is proving not to be focusing on.

They have got to do more!

  11. Govt is subsidizing maize by 100%. Great quick fix. Never thought it would have worked.

Congratulations RB and his team for drawing up the plans for a maize subsidy of 100% thereby leading to lower mealie meal prices.

PF take note, this is how you solve a problem. By thinking critically and finding lasting solutions and not demos.

  13. 35 How insightful and knowledgeable Free-Market-Capitlst

You can only subsidise for a limited period of time. How long will the government help in subsidising the National Milling? Dont you forsee this as a temporal problem, which will revamp anytime sooner, especially with the world economy not doing as well.

Also what do you think of the government buying back the Mines and removing them in foreign hands who are do not care about labour in our country, because of allegedly 40,000 loss of jobs?

  15. #37. INFECTED MEAT

You are wrong. Govt is not subsidizing national milling but subsidizing maize. Maize is a key input in the production of mealie meal. Mealie meal is in the competitive business and if National milling drops their prices, the other milling companies will follow suite because they will fail to compete favorably and make profits.

On the issue of the copper mines. That is a good move by govt (the buying back of mines). If you look at the economic trends, the copper price last month rose from $3,000 to $4,000 which is just a slight increase. The price of copper stands to rise further in the future. The USA, China and many EU economies are planning stimulus packages [tbc

  16. cont from #41]

which will involve heavy investment in infrastructure. This is in order to cushion the burden of unemployment. Canada is planning to run deficits and invest in infrastructure so as to stimulate the economy.

Copper is one of the key ingredients when it comes to infrastructure development. In the long run, when these stimulus packages start going into effect, the price of copper will shoot up and if govt gets the minning firms before the copper price shoots up, govt stands to benefit heavily from a high copper price.

  17. :d Without PF pressure you would not have seen change. all are cowards. we threatened they acted out of desparation. so mind Banda was sleeping please appreciate but always some brains are small to remember our pressure akulyeni fye…all of you had no idea but you were /:):((:(( now after action you are saying PF PF and :d:d:d

  18. 41. How can i not learn. Thanks

I feel these are not even milestones but small inputs to keep us off balanced, because i still do not know their long term goals, as it stands.
On your issue of copper mines that could not have been more true, except this backdraw of the mines being run by the government i suppose would be the corruption which is rife.

Those prices of copper do they also include the scarp? I am told scrap goes for anything up to $3000 a tonne.

  19. lozi man wise man what is this – baccteria is it english or lozi some one to help the ‘am lozi acadecian, lozians will always be’ twafwa :((:((

  21. If governemnt has subsidise maize by 100% and breakfast will now be sold at K52,5oo and roller K42,500.in my own analysis the price of mealie meal is still especially that with current poverty levels majority of zambians live on $ 1 to $2 dollar meal per day.So if its 100% maize subsidise breakfast should go down to K 35,OOO Roller K25,000 then the majority can afford.

  25. Good move ba Chimanga Changa. I personally applaud your company’s move and efforts.
Zedians rely on Nshima day in day out. Please continue considering their plight,,, tepakulekelesha.=d>=d>=d>=d>=d>=d>

  26. You have to read this. The Citizens Democratic Party’s DRAFT MANIFESTO IS READY. Type as ONE WORD;

the citizens democratic party “dot” com

This a a manifesto unlike any other. It will do us Zambians proud that we have people who can lead our country Simple, practical and concise to read unloke the PF/UPND/MMD docs. You will not be disappointed! CDP Putting People First.

  28. ZED1! You are a constant campaigner for CDP. I have just read the CDP Manifesto. Question???

WHAT DO WE HAVE TO DO TO GET THE CDP ON THE GROUND AND ELECTED?- WHERE DO I MAKE MY CONTRIBUTION MONEY OR OTHERWISE? I KNOW YOU HAVE SOMTHING TO DO WITH THEM HOW DO I MAKE CONTACT WITH YOU?

Ppl reading this pls even if you a die hard PF or UPND or MMD. Read their manifesto- it is not just different, it is enjoyable to read, practical, simple but yet intelligently written. Enough said

  29. That sounds gud but are the new prices affordable by an average citizen?
LT shuold carry out a general consensus so the people who are directly affected can be heared.

  30. I think God is unfair, have you guys seen the wealth of utter urgliness that characterises the face of Geoffrey Lungwangwa. If you put him and Sata together and brought Michael Jackson on the scene, is this not Thriller “night of the living dead” we are talking about here my brethrens? If any of my daughters brought a creature like that home, I will slay it one time, no doubt.

  31. Iwe ka Rotten Meat, whats your problem.I was sleeping not knowing that you are talking rubbish against me.Dont you dare talk against me like that. The most dull chap on blogg.I even wonder if you reached grade 12.we kapuba, from now on close that beak of yours, oke.

  32. i think rb wil make a good president of zed if not the best i say so becoz he is proud to take advice from opposition ,hh last week did advise gvt to subsidise our staple food, milie meal, that is what i cal working together .thanks also to hh for the advice.

  33. Sometimes life is unfair. Here we spend 49 pin on a six pack of Heineken. Pipo at home it is life for a bag of maize.

    God help our pipo!!

  34. Ba Cottan we thank God for you. Pliz continue with the same spirit. God bless Cottan and bless the works of his hands for him to continue being a blessing even to others.

  35. LT. You guys must at least try to polish your pics. Didn’t you notice red eyes on the pic? Come on guys, get a good 120 dollar camera and program it to avoid red eyes.

  36. Let’s do this baice coz incidentally that our staple food! Yeah. Roger that! Let me see how many terrorists have been hit in Gaza today……….

  37. Whilst the news is appreciated, i still smell a rat. I really doubt if anyone will buy this mealie meal at that price. Retailers will be talking of “old stock”. Thats the usual story. And by the time old stock runs out, the price will have sky rocketed again. Hmmm….

  38. Nizi ba kotoni, mwela onse bakamba, kulafibweshafye wat mo ,zambia chalo chesu twalipoka ubuntungwa nangu ifibunga kufibweshafye :d:d:d

  39. give credit whre its due, thanks Mr.cottan for the anoucement, and thanks to the Goverment for the subsidy, its a shame to pipo like 35 and 39 stil talking about lines of tribe. for our country to develop we have to dump the lines of tribe, zambia is for zambians, everything that happens in zambia is for zambians……not for any tribe in particular….

  40. #41 & 42, Good explanation and analysis. I have to give credit where it is due. Continue enlightening us bro.

  41. Lets face the truth. I dont like these misplaced praises on Cottan. can somejnt tell me if Cottan will reduce the prices without the Govt intervention? I know PF have a phobia for RB but hey as Zambian lets give credit where it is due.The man(Nyama Soya)and not Cottan, has taken the right decision hence we ought to praise hom and not Cottan.

  42. lets learn to separate the political parties from the goverment….it has to start from the top though…every decision our goverment makes has to be stragic looking at our grain reserves and our economic status…the bigest question i have for our govement is “do we still have the MDGs ‘millenium Development Goals’in mind? if yes that what stragy are we using to get to those goals” coz whatever we fought for the few past years we no longer have it today……

  43. Cottan could make better president than your RB. Problem we still have in Africa is to consider Presidency more than Chieftainship. I wonder why Umusungu can’t run for president, if Obama could..

  44. Iyo, we can not have a white man for president. This country has enough local resourses. The problem is poverty makes people vote wrongly. Eg. akulu Mhuno!

  45. Pipo should not waste their money on so called Breakfast meal. Roller meal is better as it is more nutritious. actually chigayo meali meal is the best. When home all I do is buy maize and take it to chigayo it is more sustainable. Also i have trained my family not to depend on nshima but other foods such as cassava, pumpkins, sweetpotatoes are equally healthy.
We have to change our mindset towards food

  46. :d/ Thanks Mr Coton. Our relatives will survive yet another day.Subsidies are all over , most govts are doing this a short-term measure to counter rising food prices, which will normalise if the harvests are good.

  47. Anyway whatever course we may head for, i see this much of a short term move than what most of here are thinking… Better invest in some big projects that will have a trailing effect when harvest time comes and RB will have made his name than all this…

  48. hehehehe what a diss on number 29. scary.

Sharp shooter, Infected meat and free market capitalist, probably the only people that said something more useful, in this blog

what is better roller meal or breakfast. i personally thing the prices should be the same. also what happened with 50kg millie meal.

  49. 72. Don’t argue with that kid. Just leave him! I find him pompous and don’t really like him as well. If you start talking about people reaching grade 12, make sure you look like one, with no question marks in your sentences people will doubt you have reached yourself. Also blog has one g. Reaching grade 12 is not an achievement but a mandatory, degrees is what you should talk about. You don’t make yourself look like reaching that grade 12.

    #97 well spoken!

  50. Why is it that some people are finding it very hard to give credit to RB and very easy to blame him (sometimes even to matters that are completely unrelated to him). Some people are even suggesting that Cottan should be president for merely announcing that RB’s govnt has subsidised maize by 100%, hence the reduction of mealie meal prices. This issue is not about PF or MMD or UPND, its about Zambians. All we have to say is that the govnt has taken the right step, though its a short-term measure. BTW, in a few months time we shall be harvesting our crops.

  51. Viva Zed analysis,
#100 you are right my bro. What worries me about RB style of government management is that he is employing tactics of short term appeasement. I do not see any of his plans bringing any economic stability and ultimately food and job security to Zedians. What Zed needs are economics managers to the extent where we are able to fend for our selves. Right all of his solutions to price reductions are very myopic and won’t sustain us for no more than 5 monyhs to come. Levy for a change targeted growth of agriculture by way of farmer friendly policies of his govt.

  52. What the govt must do now is to put measure to stop not only holding, but also smuggling of the commodity.
It is not enough for govt to put up laws but wait for good will from the public, and only lament when there is no corporation from the public.
There are times when govt would be aware of companies that hold on to maize to create attificial shortages, but they go unpunished.
I have also heard the govt say, on many other aspects, that a contractor has abandoned a project after receiving , and all they do is lament and no one is punished yet the country loses. Is that the way you can run govt? This was the case with Chiluba, and also LPM; I hope RB will do things differently.

  53. Biggie Jim,
You ought to understand that we do not hate RB, rather it is his solutions to problems that need serious answers that worry majority of Bena Zed. When he does a good job we will certainly applaud his efforts.
Zed is where it is because of short term solutions. Look at how LSK is now all because city planning did go beyond the noses of the planners. We should aim at doing things right first time with no strings attached (nkhani ya kang’ono).
What sense does it make to enjoy reduced prices on mealie meal and fuel for 3 months only to see them go up again. What say you.

  54. #106,In management, there is short, medium and long term planning. What is important, however,is these plannings to complement each other. There can not be long term plan without short term. And if Nyama Soya implements a long term strategy, you will be quick to say he is not delivering. Its is too early to judge and as for me,i will remain armed and i wont hesitste to shoot him down using my sharp vote if he doesnt deliver.

  55. You people, u want us to give credit to RB, yet you are the same people who are saying lets not oppose him coz he has only done short a period to be blamed.
Remember we once survived with out LPM, whilst in stable condition. Mind you its not RB but you and I, to move this country. The President should inspire and seen to lead his people.

Ba Moze even a white man is fine to lead us, may be we cant have regional votes. What do you think? 😕

  56. You people, u want us to give credit to RB, yet you are the same people who are saying lets not oppose him coz he has only done short a period to be blamed.

  57. I do not worry about mealie meal, I grow my own maize and take it to chigayo. Even grow my own rice & take it to chigayo too. Cottan has no bearing on my life for as long as the rains are free!!!

  58. I agree with one posting, it is time we diversified in staple foods. Lets bring up kids on Potatoes, pasta, rice, cassava . The problem right now is most pipo were brought up on mugaiwa that is all they know. Enough of ubwali.
