Zambia’s Catholic Church distances itself from partisan politics

Share

The Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) has dismissed claims that the Catholic Church is conniving with some opposition political parties with the sole purpose of attacking government.

ZEC Secretary Paul Samasumo says the Catholic Church is non-partisan and it has no political affiliation.

Father Samasumo stressed that the church does not belong to any opposition political party but that it only contributes to issues concerning the nation just like any other organization which is non-partisan.

Fr. Samasumo was speaking in interview with ZANIS in Lusaka today.

Fr. Samasumo, however, vowed that the Church is going to continue giving advice to give checks and balances on government if it sees that things are not straight.

The clergy maintained that the church speaks on behalf the voiceless people in society.

Fr. Samasumo said the Church is concerned with the well-being of affairs of this country adding that it is not going to ignore important issues unfolding in the country.

He pointed out that pastoral letters that were published in the media dwelt on important issues affecting the nation and economic well-being affecting the citizens.

    • Wow! this is lovely Ba Catholic, though these pipo tebakukonkelesha its like they dont want to be opposed even when they are doing someting wrong.Iam not a Catholic but Iam in love with this Church.

  1. The problem with the MMD is that it only wants to listen to those compromised born again pastors who are always preaching about “mutulo” ignoring inshimbi in Catholic priests. Mwapya.

    • Witwishika, Nine Chale. It might help to clear your doubt if you googled ‘pastoral letters by Catholic Bishops’ in any country, the essence is the same; addressing issues affecting the people of God. Mwenso fye wa kamfulumende kesu being pinned for messing up unsuspecting citizens.

  2. Well said! Unfortunately, RB thinks he can deal with the Church the way he deals with his fellow politicians. Lies won’t save him, if anything, they will bring him down. The man has messed up quite a lot, and he has added no quality at all to the country. It’s simply cheap politics by RB!!!

  3. LT, please give us what ZEC said in full, if it is too long quote some valuables so that we comment with facts before us.

  4. Ba RB bachili balebomba, bapeniko inshita! bena Zambia mwaba shani kanshi, kano nganimwe?

  5. I am a born again Christian, but I can tell you that there is not that many churches in Zambia that fight for our basic rights than the cartholics. As a christian the bible tells me to speak up for the vulnerable; too many pastors have indeed been compromised. Though there are pastors too that believe in justice, these and many more of us Zambians that claim to be christians should fight for the true liberation of our nation. God gave us Zambia so as we can develop it through hard work and his unchangeable great laws. I repeat hard work. May God help us see the true light so as we can rid ourselves of some evils that came with those that helped win our independence.

  6. yes, that’s the position of the church but some amongst have veered off that line and you will do right to tame that extremist of yours at Radio icengelo.he should not hide under the guise of speaking for the people when his position is well known.he is not in rwanda

    • It seems you have Changed your name in trying to Hide always. But writing on the wall reveals you. Rwanda was not started by the Church for own information it was started by the Led the likes of RB and you Who could not listen from other people. Niwe Mulola pamo?

    • when you say i have changed my name in trying to hide always what do you mean? And hiding for what? And from who? Maybe you get confused when flags change.am the same Akapondo boyi.ifwe ni no fear.listen redundant man.iam a catholic and i have been through baptism to confimation.i was an alter boy at age 12 i grduated to the CLC and then JUFRA later on.so i understnd my church very well.so in Rwanda there more catholic priests who have been convicted than any other religion.not even muslims.
Here in zambia cases of homosexuality has ben rampant amongst missionaries where as
our own local priests are now littering offsprings at will dont mention bad drinking habits
      So are you coolie…

    • Okey you have tried to make your point. Whats the attitude? Are you the victim of homosexuality? Anyway I can only support you opinion.

  7. and when one of them gets sick, they always want the church to pray even when they really know that some one is already dead, they keep on stealing saying let us pray. when the church points out wrongs, it is deemed an opposition party. what type of govt is this? so every one has to say yes bwana even to the corruption riddling our so called democracy?

  8. The Catholic Church is too big for it to align with a Political Party. It is a Political party that can align itself to the Catholic Church teachings and belief.

  9. When should the Church be involved in the political affairs of the Nation? When do we draw the line as to speak and when not to speak? The Church and government should be all weather friends and not when the government deem it fit to be friends with them. Like praying for the dead president. Our government official should able to accept divergent views and be able to sit down and make sense from the nonsense it is getting. Not always wanting to present itself to the public as if they were clean or the time. Maybe we should change their name from Movement for something to Moral Destruction of Democracy. MMD.

  10. I can only comment when i hear something from archbishop emmanuel milingo. he is the most impartial prelate i have ever seen. these other are just hungry for media limelight and they will only say things to please some media organisation knowing fully well anything else will not be published. The mandate of the catholic church is spread the word of God and capture more souls for the Good. unfortunately the “Born agains” have beaten us in this area and we think by alighning to perceive popular political parties we can recruit more members. this is a very dangerous strategy that can nevr last if the Pope can pull strings in Italy its because of tradition and not political alignment.

  11. To be honest, Banda is a disaster for a president. With the way things are going, his cabinet could disintegrate just like what happened to Chiluba. The level of incompetence he is manifesting is scary!

  12. Dearest Zambians on the blog. It seems very few of us know the Catholic Church and what it is capable of doing. That is a Church full of intellectual leadership-you name it. Therefore, they understand what most of us do not…for this reason, many of us come to understand what the Catholic understands when the mess is already done. Catholic leadership does not just learn the bible. That is why though many of you call yourselves educated…remember it is often in a single diploma…marketing, etc. But the Catholic leadership offers wholistic education. Just to tell some of you that you are not yet educated! So please read between the lines. LT publish the pastoral letter so that we can debate
