Gender-based violence sensitisation programme launched in Kazungula

Share

The Young Women Christian Association (YWCA) has embarked on a sensitization programme on gender-based violence against women and children in Kazungula district.

The programme, which kicked off yesterday in Mambova and Kasaya, has been made possible with the support from German Development Service (DED).

Speaking after a sensitization play by Liwase drama group, Southern Province Regional Coordinator for YWCA, Dorothy Velemu, stressed that women and children are the most vulnerable in society on issues related to human rights.
She observed that most cases of gender violence go unreported and urged women not to remain silent but report all cases of abuse to YWCA.

Mrs. Velemu urged women in communities to support each other and speak for their rights, pointing out that gender violence can lead to death. She also advised married women to remain submissive to their husbands in order for them to enjoy their marriages.

And Mrs. Velemu said parents have the responsibility to give a good example to their children by exhibiting good morals.
She said it is the duty of parents to teach their children about the dangers of HIV and AIDS because it is real.

And women in the two areas expressed their gratitude to YWCA for bringing such a sensitization programme in their communities.

  1. Its a good move. However, our traditions upholold these evil practices and some women even say if your husband doesnt beat you,it means he does not love you.Wives will even go at lenghts provoking their husbands just to be beaten.Sad stuation.

  2. Gender based language is also part of the problem. Only men fear the judgement of other men and so they put on a mask to feel comfortable while they walk on earth. Let us find our inner self (Men) and put off the mask and with this act gender based actions will disappear. It takes a lifetime to reflect on this matter. This is only for humans raised to be like men.

  3. Thank you YWCA for the work you have done there. My suggestion is, team together with YMCA when you go out on an outreach that seeks to address matters that affect the whole family.

As you can see, your approach can easily divide the family or demonise the fathers in the households.

I believe that if you can address both wives and husbands, and their children at the same time, no one in the family is left ignorant.

Yes, wives must submit to their husbands, and husbands must love their wives, their children and must not be violent towards them.

  4. “She also advised married women to remain submissive to their husbands in order to enjoy their marriages.” Interesting piece of advice from Mrs. Velemu. Ladies, mwaumfwa?

  5. Has someone read the book “The end of manhood” by John Stoltenberg?
This book deals with this matter and it is a book written for men while women listen. you will be surprised when you look at the contents.
