The labour movement has appealed to President Rupiah Banda to intervene in the continued strike by health workers.

The call comes from the Zambia Congress of trade Unions (ZCTU).

Secretary General Roy Mwaba has also reiterated his call to the health workers to resume work.

Mr.Mwaba sais in Lusaka, Sunday, that the lives of Zambians are at stake if the strike is allowed to continue.

He said it is important that the health workers resume work and allow the union and government to address their concerns.

Mr. Mwaba said despite their grievances, medical practitioners must not persist with their strike action.

Mr. Mwaba has disclosed that the ZCTU and government officials will today, Monday, address the striking health workers.

The health workers have not resumed work despite repeated calls by government and their labour leaders to do so.

And The Epilepsy Association of Zambia (EAZ) said Government should look into the plight of the health workers in order for them to reduce on the death rate in the country.[quote]

EAZ Programme Coordinator Mulenga Zimba said the organisation is going to face a lot of challenges with its patients following the continued strike by health workers adding that there will be a lot relapse in the condition of epilepsy patients.

Speaking in an interview in Lusaka yesterday, Mr. Zimba said there has been an improvement of patients having seizures since the Association was launched in the country in 2003 because of adhering to medication.

However, he said it will be difficult for epilepsy patients to be attended to and access the drugs as the health workers are not there to attend to them.

Mr. Zimba stressed that it is to this effect that patients will continue having seizures which will lead them to death as they do not have access to the drugs that they are supposed to take daily.

He added that the patients are supposed to take the medication continuously for two and half years for them to achieve the seizure freedom adding that any interruption with the drug intake can lead to continuous seizures resulting in possible death.

Mr. Zimba said this applies to other chronicle diseases like HIV/AIDS and Tuberculosis (TB) which can cause patients to become resistant to drugs, if they are not taking their drugs daily.

The EAZ Programme Coordinator said the decision by the Inspector General of police to deploy police officers at the health institutions is uncalled for adding that doing so will worsen the situation.

He has since called on Government to immediately find other means of informing the health workers over their action by sending a circular instead of resorting to using the Police.

Turning to the health workers, Mr. Zimba appealed to them to be empathetic with the vulnerable people who do not have resources to go and seek medical assistance at private hospitals or fly out of the country.

Health workers have been on strike in the country demanding improved conditions of service. Last week, Government and Public Service Unions signed a 15 percent pay rise for all civil servants including health workers ending a protracted bargaining between the two parties.

Government has since appealed to the striking nurses and other health workers to resume work because their strike was illegal after the signing of the collective agreement.

  1. “appealed to President Rupiah Banda to intervene” To me it seems someone has been sleeping all along.

  2. RB should have intervened a long time ago without appeals from anybody. It seems the man has the I dont care type of attitude. Zambia is doomed with this man as president……………..

  3. I dont seem to understand what RB is doing in the office all day because these are issues he should be giving priority. i think its high time he looked at employing new advisors otherwise he will continue to be a minority ruler because people want results and politics.

  4. We are expecting too much from him. Our leaders are bickering over mundane things in the comfort of State House, the nation is sinking into the abyss and tell tale signs abound. Soon RB will be travelling to space!

  5. So the threats are not working. My simple advise is PAY THEM. those threats will not take you anywhere. You should not that people are changed, not by coercion or intimidation, but by examples and deeds.

  6. IS THIS ROY MWABA NOT ONE THOSE WHO ENDORSED THE 15% AFTER BEING FETED AT KAFUE NATIONAL PARK? IF SO THE HE SHOULD NOT EVEEN OPEN HIS MOUTH ON THE MATTER.

  7. I am not sure if we have a President in Zambia. But I know there is a certain tired old man living in state house.

  8. Mr President allow me to give you a free man to man talk. Just move Dora to the health ministry .presto ! you are home and dry.

  9. The man is sleeping. We have a sleepy president who is always dreaming of places to tour and to meet sweet 16s.Kabili he is a sugar daddy so asking him to intervene is just a bother to him.Thats RB for you and he wants to continue beyond 2011 ka.

  10. The problem is that Zambians forget so easily. The same chap will come in 2011 with sugar and mealie meal and people will be dancing for him and will in the end vote for him. Even nurses will also vote for him. I don’t know whats wrong with us Zambians. Katwishi nga kuba docile or bupuba?

  11. Even the people who dance for him at the airport, you wonder where they come from. Even their husbands look and see them dancing to such a person. Shame

  12. Liato is meeting the lusaka nurses this afternoon. What will come out of this meeting, kaya. But like Ubuntungwa said @ 14, despite these hardships, come 2011 the same nurses will be dancing chikokoshi for RB.

  13. #13 Ubuntungwa mu Zambia the answer to your question is poverty. Poverty makes people cease to think. we need to constantly teach and remind some mothers, fathers, sisters and brothers in Zambia to think beyond the poll day, help them see beyond “pamela” only then will we have an analytical electorate. The man above in other parts of the world wouldn’t be president even if he had billions of dollars. Education is the solution thats why UPND is the best option for 2011.

  14. Am just interested in his (RB)response to this issue before wednesday because this was to be done along time ago. I actually see reason why he bought the hearses.

  15. #17. If he was a serious president, he was going to respond and sort out this problem a long time. So I don’t think he will ever make a commnet on this issue. Very soon lecturers at UNZA will go on strike immediately returning students come next week and students will start demonstrations. The govt will say they did not follow the normal channel to air their grievances and people will blame students and lecturers. To RB all these are not serious. The serious problems are to do with Dora or addressing cadres etc.

  16. This transitional president keeps ignoring the masses. He’s a disgrace, a shame and a no-good Rooftop Barman. Those patients will keep on having seizures and the AIDS will keep on spreading. RB was voted in by the people and now he’s ignoring them by pretending to be blind as a bat and deaf as a d!ck.

  17. I dont understand RB. Is he incharge of the affairs of this nation? Why should he wait for pipo to appeal to him to intervein? Any way he wants pipo to die in large numbers so that the MANDA MANDAS can start working, and inturn pipo will turn around and say these guys are working after all.

  18. #13 ubuntungwa fimo fimo…..bupuba. it hurts so much. some pipo have short term thinking. during the campaigns they are given ifitenge ifya MMD and there after forsaken. apart from that what has MMD done to write home about? Uyu wine RB has said anything about the striking nurses. imwe bantu the UTH building infrastructure looks so sore.

  19. It appears Red Bandit has a vision and I see it now. He’s trying to justify the procurement of hearses. Let the people die and send them to the grave in brand new hearses. I’ve never seen an !mbecile worse than this pr!ck.
This Rotten Bustard will damage the economy beyond repair.

  20. Nsengo: We dont need to remind MPuno to act as if he is out of the country or he has been sleeping for two weeks and cant see what is happening. I have never seen kateka uwashipula nga mpuno since he came in power he has never addressed the nation ( press conference on national issues ) He is busy appointing Dora Siliya , kalimutoba umutwe ala fikatuluka it happenned to Chiluba he ended up ukutamfya ba Vera. Mpuno we are watching you, wake up we are paying you tax money.

  21. He with his ministers can go to South Africa for minor operations while they run down the medical facilities for the common man

  22. I was just wondering, if all us bloggers went back to Zambia and then ME i become president, can’t Zambia move forward.

  23. #29 ha ha ha ha why not ME? ok since you came up with the idea i would want to be in charge of community and development. these are the ministries that should be abolished they are not serving any purpose.

  24. Let us not pile condemnation on our President please. I am sure he also has some advisors. His Excellency Ruphia Bwezani Banda is a listening and understanding president. Let us also try to avoid abusive language please!

  25. Why can they care? Their children are out in europe, US, Australia while their wifes sleep in milk and honey. Their relatives all are out at embassies in different countries. This is at the expense of poor civil servants who get K800 000 , from it they have to rent a hous at K700 000, they have to pay Zesco K300 000, They have to buy ubunga at K120 000, send their children to school at K500 000,.yaba mwe bantu I cant understand how these nurses and teachers survive????? REVOLUTION 2011

  26. If things are not going well people have the right to protest, the issue forcing them to get to work should not be tolarated instead GOVT should pay them

  27. On “Turning to the health workers, Mr. Zimba appealed to them to be empathetic with the vulnerable people who do not have resources to go and seek medical assistance at private hospitals or fly out of the country“, this is good, but I am asking NCC to put a clause in the Constitution that only life-threatening illnesses must be done abroad. Things like a knee operation must all be done in Zambia to whoever gets such problems.

8 Deja vu greetings and is my blogname now best?

    Seeing is believing?

  28. These are the same leaders who accepted the 15% increase. They should accept the blame and stop passing the buck. Why didn’t they ask their members before signing? If the reasons given to them by govt were convincing, surely the workers would have agreed.

That asside, it’s time for RB to show leadership. The lieutenants fouled up and he should accept responsibility and sort this issue out. All they need is a reassuring voice that their grievances are being delt with at a high level. Everyone knows that ministers are toothless.

  29. Why is the union failing to agree with the striking workers to resume work. Was there something discussed between RB and labour leaders in Kafue National Park consultation. There is a Minister responsible for labour Austin Liato qho is a former uninonist. Or it was easy for for him then to attach now he cant provide solutions. RB, you think has time for such matters, to him thats alter nosense. He has got appointees in name of Ministers. Ministers like Chipungu are just fueling matters by suggesting that National Soccer team will camp in Europe to prepare for remaining matches. So every striking worker thinks there is money to throw around. The MMD style of leadership is such to resolve any strike the Head of State has to make a pronouncement. Ministers are not helping matters Zee

  30. The conditions of service in the public sector in general are poor. Govt. priorities have been wrong for a long time. It is unforgivable that with all the money the ZRA collects in taxes and other earnings, the country fails to look after the health and education sector – in the meantime money is either pilfered or spent on ministerial jaunts and private medical attention abroad. On the other hand, this is not a matter for the President to directly engage in. It is a policy issue. Something for the govt. as a whole and relevant ministries. If things were in order at the ‘thinking levels’ we wouldn’ expect essential workers like nurses to strike. Morally and ethically I don’t think it is acceptable for medical staff to withdraw their services – a sustainable solution is needed.

  31. Did anyone else see Humphrey Siulapwa being embarrassed at UTH? Made me laugh. The sister-in-charge was about to kick him out of the wards for not seeking permission to carry out interviews. His response? “I am a national leader, you are junior to me”. They still chucked him out!

  32. On “The labour movement has appealed to President Rupiah Banda to intervene in the continued strike by health workers“, it appears President RB Banda is not willing to comment on the strike with his knee sickness as an excuse, but it is more interesting that he quickly re-appointed Minister Dora Siliya.

To those who may know has the swearing in Ceremony taken place for Minister Dora? As for Lungwangwa (PhD; (Prof at UNZA)), it is sad that he was moved from Ministry of Education where he fits best since his education qualifications are in Education.

Have a blessed day you all and quick recovery to President RB Banda so that he can start touring Zambia, in terms of schools and hospitals.

  33. #39 Mwiyi Waku-Musanza- Its good but give me the meaning. By the way George Kunda has gone to SA for SADC. To me it wont be a surprise if we hear that he is undergoing a “minor” operation somewhere on his thigh.

  34. little does he realise that all the lives web are losing as a result of the strike is because of his negligence (lack of intervention). The question is why should he be reminded to interven if at all his heart is for the people???????how many people have we lost so far? What is leadership?

Some body who has done his/her elementary maths knows that 15% of a small value (civil servant salary) is nothing. It is an infinitesimal increament that changes nothing except increasing the number of decimal places of the salary.

  35. Goodmorning bloggers, I hope you all had a nice weekend.
This matter is getting from bad to worse. Mr. President, please do something quick. How may people should die before a solution is found? Or is this the reason why you ordered the hearses?

  36. The devil has put a penalty on all things we enjoy in life. Either we suffer in health or we suffer in soul or we get fat. They get fat and they are rushed to morning side clinics,we get thin we have our darkside clinics. My own experience and development deepen everyday my conviction that our moral progress may be measured by the degree in which we sympathize with individual suffering and individual joy.I believe all suffering is caused by ignorance. People inflict pain on others in the selfish pursuit of their happiness or satisfaction. Yet true happiness comes from a sense of peace and contentment, which in turn must be achieved through the cultiv.

  37. It appears MMD members are not listening to what Hon Magande is talking concerning holding the convention. NEC men and women lets us not kill democratic princples on which the MMD was founded for sake of getting favours from one man. This country needs to move forward and not backwards. We cant have essential public workers going on strike and us failing to resolve such issues as though the entire leadership has gone to sleep. The only pipo that are making wrong pronouncements are Teta, Mulongoti, and Ronnie whilst Zambia One is busy dishing out positions. The appointment of Eve Mwanawasa and dropping of Lisulo to NEC was it regional balancing or just to please the late Presidents family. In meatime, pipo are cheering RB, RB, RB for 2011. Its far we need solutions not counting chicks

  38. #49, Ghost something! you are handsome but try to put a smile on that face of yours! its scary.

#48, do you have a young decent brother?

  39. #53 Red Lipstick, somebody stole my smile and she broke my heart. They say Love begins with a smile, grows with a kiss, and ends with a teardrop.Thats how I keep dem girls away.

  40. how did Bwe bwe bwe zani get into power?..ohoooo… Charm?.. no JU JU,,,, yes i believe so the juju he had blindede most of us ..check out todays post paper Mwanawasa’s son is not as well impressed with how Bwe used Mwanawasa”s name to gain power and support from pipo.. we used to be addressed by the late each time we needed his views, how bout Bwe …does he care how many we die? no.. why cos the Hearses are already here to function ..well done Bwe mwandi if only u knew how much i hate is Man yaba ….forgive heavenly father.

  41. #53 If am scary, then pretend i dont exist,as for the smile thats how far I can go.As a matter of fact I do not need it,I will put a smile on my face when I enter heaven, then am sure that the struggles are over.

  42. Ifipuba ma teachers. No wonder they will remain poor for ever. How they accept 15%. If they had continued with the strike, the country would have been paralised and govt was going to bend. So nurses continue with your fight. No one will fire you. Even doctors are a let down. Today they say we are on strike coz nurses are on strike, and tomorrow they go back for work. Shame on you doctors.

  43. This is the problem we have in Africa. This is why presidents feel they own countries. Why appleal to the president over a strike? Whats the work of ministers?

  44. this is the situ, RB skims he’s following the late’s footsteps in that a lot of pipo never dug levy at the beginning but then got to dig him later, dig? so he’s given us chaps up to, say….March 2010 to start finding him appealing….as for the strikes, necessary nuisance, happens every year dont it? long as he keeps his eyes and ears shut, it will soon go away…

  45. Having RB for a president is as bad as having an 8 inch Brick for a president, the man does literally nothing, and this is someone who wants to stand for 2011…. nonsense…mpsttiiiiii

  46. #26 Ba Moze atishani? Is he on the move again? Uliwa data ite aleshimika man. Bushe naumfwa ati Chiluba ni washout like the old cliche? Man tulinelyashi!

  47. Red Lipstick and GoGo gaga sorry darlings,I was just tripping, right now am smiling for you, thanks for your advice I will take,But I bet I need a girl to put a smile on my face, would you be the one?

  48. 39 Deja vu thanks and Mwiyi (Maestro/Teacher) Waku(From)-Musanza (South) – is its direct good translation meaning. However, I had thought I was using a PC where I reduced the blogname to Habupampu (Maestro) which means one who know the subjects better. Fun enough, I used another and thus have to change the blog name to Habupampu, which must be short enough for you to use nicely, on all PCs I use here.

As for your “By the way George Kunda has gone to SA for SADC. To me it wont be a surprise if we hear that he is undergoing a “minor” operation somewhere on his thigh.” Surely, I won’t be surprised too if such happens.

  49. When the trade union leaders were signing the 15% salary increment, who were they representing? Does anyone know the % increment that will pacify the nurses?

  50. On the thread, I strongly believe that President RB Banda studied former President FTJ Chiluba’s rule of Zambia nicely and is now using Chiluba Administration tactics.

Rememer, Chiluba used to be quiet too on STRIKES. On Minister Teta being vocal under President RB Banda, Chiluba (Hon Doc, Malawi) also used others like PF leader Sata (Grade2/6, unknown) to speak on his behalf. Chiluba used excuses like I have not said anything on the Third Term but people are asking me to go for it. Check out ““The President said, ‘I have not told anyone that I am not standing or I am standing. What is happening is that some party members and officials are asking me to stand in 2011. Now that is a show of confidence in my leadership, so naturally I am supposed to say something on that. ““…

Let’s deliver to our people.'”” the POST reported.

  52. Red lipstick, ala tuli ba ma shocko, ifwe kale ya tripper ,ni load shedding mumutwe but kuti waka controller nga uli ba side baby waumfwa.

  53. Cont.74 on Didn’t Sata MC (G. 2/6) block MMD members under Chiluba’s rule at the MMD Convention in 2001?

I am afraid that the way President RB Banda is working shows a great appreciation of most of former President FTJ Chiluba’s tactics. This is why it may be possible to se Chiluba’s court cases as wash-out so that PRECEDENCE in our judiciary’s courts of law is set to forgive a former President.

Let us wait and see as events unfold. This is very hilarious indeed.

  58. #16. rb is highly educated. Its not always education. Natural intellegence, wisdom and ambitions make a good worker. I have seen a lot highly educated people who are simply under-performers. Zambia needs a hands-on man like Sata. A man who is intoxicated with results and discipline.

If govt assents to an unreasonable 25% increment, what this will do is simply raise the price of goods whilst govt will face a greater budgetory obligation. The increase if ever given will simply be paper money. Everyone will be able to see this eventually. This in turn will eventually lead to capital flight and the collapse of the foreign exchange. General panic will ensue and the demon called deflation will raise its urgly head. By then not only will the nurses lose but everyone.

  71. what is EIZ to me,am register with the institute of civil Engineers not a zambian board, am talking of a world profession board for civil engineers.Broken hill ya are pu*sy my man,I cant waste ma energy on dumb ass lifeless creatures like you,I know ya ass is itching after a overnight f*g ,f*ck you and ya mama, daddy, grand mother and father, all ya aunties, uncles, brothers, sisters, cousins, friends and all ya workmates too,f*ck all ya

  72. An unreasonable increase will result in the increase of price as a result of increased money circulation unaccompanied by an increase in production. The people to lose will be the nurses themselves plus the country as a whole. Wise decisions need to be made by govt. A polical decision affecting economics needs to taken.

  76. The comment by #81 that Rupiah Banda was brought in from retirement by late Mwanawasa to please easterners and get their vote is tragic and has plunged the country into untold hardships and scandals.

The Zambian people have said that we need, as two giant political parties to unite the nation by working together“. Such is what Zambians need and not chacters who are just bent on winning 2011 elections even when they have clearly failed to manage the country.

  80. May be we should talk to mmd cadres to demonstrate at state house to as RB to intervene in this countinued strike.

  81. 120 continued.

Following the above analysis, I am thus asking president HH as leader of the PF and UPND pact to address the nurses across the country on both radio and MUVITV to plead with them to go back to work for now, but spend the little they have to convince their families in rural Zambia to vote for the PACT in the 2011 elections so that they can be given good pay and allowances when that time comes.

    1P 3 + KJV Bible:

16 Having a good conscience; that, whereas they speak evil of you, as of evildoers, they may be ashamed that falsely accuse your good conversation in Christ.

  82. we are tired of ZCTU cadre mentality!!we need fresh elections at ZCTU….just as we need new presidential and parliamentary elections in Zambia!!we have no govt rite now!!

  83. 127 Deja Vu, on your “All the sam,e the current leaders must be kicked outHave a blessed day and keep well you all” you are very right but we need the current leaders to give us a better Constitution. And so, the PF-UPND PACT is a good start while you and me are coming up with new parties for Zambia. I believe the friendships we made in schools, colleges and universities are good enough for us to make National parties.

  84. “Rupiah Banda AKSED to intervene in the continued strike by health workers”. The editor must be spending lots of time with Nigerians or he is one of them. How else would you explain the “aksed”?

  85. The goverment can make a difference 1) Keep the budget stable by outsourcing things like maintenance of medical equipment, cleaning, and food supply in hospitals removes cost of management 2) Make nurses wear scrubs instead of those expensive uniforms all other western countries are doing that and it is more hygenic 3) Apart from adding the 15% increase to wages LOWER THE TAXES for doctors, nurses and teachers this will leave them with more money to spend. We can not afford to lose these skilled workers to other countries Zed invested in their training and needs them. Make student doctors and nurses work a free 24 hour shift in hospitals every week covering hospitalsome duties, reception or administration . Students need to give back for free education

  86. ALL of you are just talking and some of you have gone to an extent of insulting RB but is this going to change the position? THE PROBLEM IS STRAIGHT FORWARD. Health workers not just nurses need to be paid decently. So by just talking we are not sorting out any problem. we are also affected because we are the ones who are not being treated but because we are DOCILE we just end at talking so the politician is not scared of anything. if the president does not respond, let the opposition or we zambians have a mass rally on saturday and march to UTH and probably to state house and the matches should nt stop until RB responds. if people can challenge the “AYATOLA” why are we zambians failing to challenge a civilian govt backed by retired failed generals? DOCILE, DOCILE DOCILE,umwenso bamambala

  87. This is the reason most skilled Docs and Nurses leave Zed for Greener pastures, RB has lost it , he never had the plot in the first place. please some one Mumu pande ko amano uyu RB, na fulungana, bad

  88. broken hill jeraboh boyi sorry,we brothers,we both need each other but please learn not to ingnite trouble.have a good evening,i will alwaz love you.your country man GD.

  89. continue with the same spirit nurses.its not fair pliz give them what they deserve. Are you not the same people who went to uk pleading with the nurses to come back home?do you think they can survive on that 15%? sorry RB

  90. Even Siulapwa has the common sense to visit patients at UTH; something Rupiah Banda’s ministers consider to be beneath them to do. Instead, they’d rather issue press statements through mouthpiece ZNBC/ZANIS from their comfortable air-conditioned offices threatening nurses with dismissal if they did not return to work! This corrupt government must go.

  91. Historians, be sure to record who the first “customers” will be of Rupiah’s Manda Mandas.

  92. is there anybody who has statistic of how many deaths cases we have which has resulted as a result of these continued strikes.

lets nurses know when to strike a balance between duty(life saving) and self-interest. yeah we nobody is not sympathising but i feel the consequences of their actions are retrograsive
