Zambia is to award Cuban Commander-In-Chief, Fidel Castro Ruiz with the ‘The Order of the Zambian Eagle’, Zambia’s High Commissioner to Canada, who also oversees Cuba, Nevers Mumba has disclosed.

Dr. Mumba said Cuba has immensely contributed to Zambia’s health and the education sectors since time in memorial during Mr. Castro’s leadership.

He said the two countries have had several memorandums of understanding which will be cemented even more during President Rupiah Banda’s three day state visit to this country.

He told ZANIS in an interview here today that there are currently 41 Zambian students studying various disciplines in Cuban Universities and other tertiary institutions.

He said Cuba has also been sending several medical Doctors to Zambia for many years now.

President Banda is expected to arrive here at midday today, Monday September 28th, following an invitation by his Cuban counterpart Raul Castro Ruiz.

President Banda arrives from Caracas in Venezuela where he on Saturday joined other African heads of state and government in participating in the second Africa-South America summit.

The summit was held in Margarita Island in Venezuela.
Among other activities which President Banda will do here include laying a wreath at the monument of Cuban hero, Jose Marti before visiting Labiofam, which is a research centre for vaccines for malaria and other tropical diseases.

Dr. Mumba said Zambia will learn the technology and science of producing vaccines, adding that the two countries have already signed a memorandum of understanding in this area.

President Banda will also visit the Colon centre, which is a memorial site for Cubans who died in Africa while fighting for independence.

He said the President will on Tuesday meet the 41 Zambian students that are studying in various disciplines in Cuba.

President Banda will on Wednesday visit an African national heroes’ memorial centre before visiting Varadero tourist resort from which Zambia is expected to learn some tourism lessons.

Alongside President Banda’s three day state visit to Cuba, there will be a Joint Permanent Commission (JPC) meeting that would be held between the two countries.

The two countries will sign a memorandum of understanding after the JPC meeting.
He said Cuba has been able to stand on its own and build its economy despite trade embargoes imposed on it by the United States of America.

President Banda leaves Cuba for Lusaka on Thursday, 1st October 2009.
Before going to Venezuela, President Banda attended the 64th General Assembly of the United Nations in New York last week.

  1. what has this castro done for Zambia to warrant receiving that honour? This MMD is just a bunch of crooks who want to benefit as individuals in what ever they do in the name of the govt.

  2. #6, My dear pa Zed impossible things become possible. The person in question was in the fore front to campain for RB and even danced in support, so ni natotela ba Nevers. Some of these people do really mislead the mass in these churches. ZAMBIA SHALL BE SAVED, but not with this kind of hyposcrisy.

  3. Wont be suprised if this does not lead to NM being dismissed. Chitala & Nerev Muba are birds of same further..Kulibonesha syndrome

  4. this is b.u.l.l.s.h.i.t the eagle is a symbol of our pride and you give such owner to a person who does not support human rights of his own peolpe of cuba.
what is wrong with us. surely we cant just vist minus doing such s.t.u.p.id gift. i m hate. what about Kaunda who did something good for the country did you give him such honour.

  5. besides what power does highcommisioner mumba have to make such an offer. i m totally hurt i dont like such kind of thing. the eagle is for the president as per constitution. that is why he has it on his number plate. it is our symbol of pride. we say we are victors like a eagle. and you give away on a silver plata. bu l lshi t

  6. MUMBA should understand that CUBAs contribution to the health system in many countries on Earth is part of international politics.Cuba is still under Trade embargo with the USA and other democratic nations due to its inhuman policies and a family Sociolist Dictatorship which has been in power for over 50 years. Cuban docs. are not only in zed but in many countries because they want sympathisers to their blockade and bad governance. So what can we admire from them apart from their noisemaking against democracy?

  7. its so shocking how people change,he was a man of god decades ago wonder what got into him,the devil must have used his new tricks.he brought a naked woman in his eyes

  8. You zambians should be grateful for such political ties because it makes a huge difference when one is in a foreign country. It is such kind of understandings that make living in foreign country much more lovely and we all benefit so let us give credit were it is due. It is always nice to be welcomed in another country due to such alliances. I am in support of more such ties that benefit zambia.

  9. The next thing you will hear is that chief cadre William Banda is made Zambia’s high commissioner to London. It’s a fools day everyday with this administration.

  10. well, castro may have a bad image but he has helped zambia. when u go to hospitals u see cuban doctors who volunteer to come and work pa zed yet we dont even appreciate. america and the west have a good image, but they try to control our internal affairs all the time. maybe its high time zed stops depending on the west. i hope the cooperation btwn south america and africa will work out for the best coz the west has dominated too much. wat gadafi said is true that security council is a terror council. too much power in a few countries’ hands. africa and south america has no representation in the so-called security or terror council as gadafi calls it.

  11. Fidel Castro, is a great man, who has strived along with others like the Great Che Ernesto Guavara and Raul Castro to create a true socialist nation with equality and fairness; Yes they were not perfect and had their short falls, but the Nation of Cuba has achieved a lot; with one of the highest literacy rates in the world Cuba stands as an example to all. Its is unfortunate that the US has continued to suppress Cuba in a very unfair manner. And the question I ask is for what? Why in this day and age? This is one of the great disappointments I have in Obama. And I think its bold for Zambia to go ahead and award a man who led a country that has partnered with Zambia on many fronts and has achieved so much for his people but continues to be labeled a black sheep by the west!

  12. Cuba is a dictatorship. people still drive very old cars, they are not allowed to buy new cars. Zambian society under KK was far much better to Cuban lives even today. In cuba, salaries are graded across the country, it doesnt matter your profession. Imagine a doctor or engineer getting same salary as some other less educated persons. Yes they have educated many people but what is that if you cant benefit from your personal achievements? They send their doctors all over the world to sttract sympathy. Its an ideological thing. Besides, we have enough Zambian doctors, just that we cant pay them so they leave teh country. Thank you Cuba for your doctors and support but please free your people to live as they choose. We dont need support from dictatorships. We feel for oppressed Cubans.

  13. The post wants sympathisers an pipo to rise against RB government an hence makin some diplomats to comment on internal issues an makin sure tht donors dnt fund ths nation Ba post stop ths hypocris even u mmembe if u happen to be ambassador in th usa an go an comment on cruel policy thy hav towards other countries,

  14. We know we are poor ,bt personnally i cnt allow a person who has mon to come an mak policys in my home thts bull sh**t so ba post stop inciting diplomats to rise against th ruling party. We know u hav personal grudge against chiluba bt be careful ths might hav effect sumwhere iwe mmembe an ur friends.

  15. Help me out. Our man in Canada oversees Cuba too? Exactly how much are we paying in flights, accommodation etc. for this? Never mind. Once again I volunteer to set up on behalf of all Zambians as overseer of Cuba. I’ll set up a tent on the beach and during hurricane season I voluntarily submit to moving in with the Castros as I’m sure wherever they are I’ll be safe so need for evacuation. Besides I believe the Cubans tend to be better prepared for these events. Whatever the order of the eagle means as a symbolic gesture is not something I will dwell on. I’m off to learn Spanish just in case I am called to duty.
