Attend Independence celebrations, political party leaders prodded

Share

National Revolution Party President, Cosmo Mumba has appealed to all opposition political party leaders not to shun this year’s independence celebrations.

Dr. Mumba said in an interview in Lusaka today that the Independence Day is an important national day which cuts across political affiliation.

He said there was need for all political leaders to put aside their political differences and participate in the celebrations.
Dr. Mumba said politicians should for once come together and celebrate this important day in the national calendar and reflect on the peace the country has continued to enjoy since its independence from Britain in 1964.

The opposition leader said this year’s Independence Day celebration should be used to reconcile politicians while reflecting on the many challenges the country has been facing.

He said Independence Day celebration should not be politicized as it is an important national event.

Dr. Mumba said his party has received an invitation from cabinet to attend the celebration and said he is ready to participate in the celebrations.

He also called on President Rupiah Banda to also take advantage of this year’s celebration to unite the country.

Zambia will celebrate its 45th Independence Day celebration on Saturday October 24, under the theme: Celebrating with the spirit of reconciliation and good neighborliness.

This will be the first Independence Day celebration to be graced by President Rupiah Banda since his election as Head of State.

  1. This independence day should not even be celebrated because Zambia is worse off than 45 years ago. How can anyone celebrate independence when there isnt even fuel in the country to get around. Anyone who will go to state house for celebrations is a fool. Let the chief fool who lives there celebrate by himself since he is the only enjoying life in Zambia.

He even has fuel to get to Uganda.

  2. There is nothing to show for the country to celebrate 45 years of independence considering the poverty being experienced in the country.
It would be more logical to commemorate the 24th October as a remembrance to the freedom fighters and other gallant men and women who sacrificed their lives and livelihoods in the fight against colonialism.
It really should be a solemn day of reflection and not merry-making.

  3. Cosmo, again atampa ukupena. bwainduka ubushilu. we thought nautusha kanshi walechita pretend? tell us what we should celebrate that is so new that we are all eager to stand and sing of zambia.

  4. just becoz you are hungry and want to go and eat free food @state house you tell us what to do?crazy boy..get married first..

  5. # 1 I agree with you there is nothing to be celebrated. Let them focus on projects that will bring some development to our country. Honestly how can pipo that are living in poverty without money to send their kids to school celebrate. Let Nyama Soya and his family celebrate coz they are the only ones that are fully benefiting from national resources.

  6. If the reazonz our KK and FTJ gave for not attending Independence celebrationz when invited by their predecessorz still exist, then not one serious oppoztion party will come this time around. Yes we must all cheer about our independence in a cool harmonious atmosphere, without anybody taking it they are more dezerving than others.

  7. Lets forget about celebrations. It will be much better just to remember the day we got independence than to celebrate. This country need to be upgraded in every province so that everyone has a feel of being independent.

  8. I think we just lack patriotism should anyone one be reminded on the important of this day surely? What more the people who fought for this independence are still alive, how do they feel iee? They feel ashamed to have fought for independence for people who are not grateful , Come on Zambians, America even after 200 years of Independence still hold their’s with prestige what about us only 45 years yet no one seems to appreciate our forefathers for fighting for independence for your and my sake, aaa no where is this country heeding to?

  9. There is nothing to celebrate the 45th independence celebration as all that is on ground KK created it. The MMD have nothing to show for their terms in office. All government houses where sold to themselves. Now ZAMTEL is being sold to themselves. Has RB ever stayed in office and carry out serious work? No, he is always away on trips and making his personal money. So who is running the country?

  10. I agree with most of the sentiments expressed in most of the comments, probably we need to make it much more a day of reflection and thanking those selfless people who at least gave us the political independence which is now being enjoyed by the few. I can never understand how we got to be where we are now? A dependant nation, no self belief, bows to anything foreign, people still sleeping on the floor, no ownership of industries, no decent meals for the majority, no medical care, no universal education, roads full of potholes, no latrines for all,…….surely it must be more about reflection than celebrating, regardless of our personal political positions. Poverty is the same regardless of tribe, party allegiance and many of the variables you can think of. Day of reflection it must be.

  11. Political independence has been achieved and few are benefiting from its fruits. During KK’s days it made sense to celebrate because medical and education fees were free and goods and services were highly subsidised. The leadership we put in power should learn from the developed nations and try to implement the same instead of just politicking. Science and technology is the only key to economic independence. Govt needs to come up with policies that will motivate scientists and engineers to perform wonders like in America, Europe and Asia. dancing at airports is not the solution!
