Kansanshi increases copper production

Share

FIRST Quantum Minerals, owners of Kansanshi Mine and Bwana Mkubwa, have announced copper production of 93,500 tonnes for the third quarter and 275,300 for the first nine months of 2009.

First Quantum president, Clive Newall said in a news release posted on the company website that the production levels represented an increase of about 14 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively.

“First Quantum today reported copper production of 93,500 tonnes for the third quarter and 275,300 for the first nine months of 2009. These production levels exceed those of the equivalent 2008 periods by 14 per cent and 15 per cent, respectively,” Mr Newall said.

Kansanshi Mine in Solwezi contributed the bulk, weighing in with a production of 61,300 tonnes during the third quarter, up from 53,400 during the same period last year, and produced 182,500 after the first nine months of the year against 153,300 tonnes produced last year.

After producing 1,600 tonnes in the third quarter last year and 5,300 tonnes after nine months, the closed Bwana Mkubwa operation in Ndola has not produced anything this year.

The Guelb Moghrein operation in Mauritania produced 7,400 tonnes in the first quarter of this year and 24,800 after nine months, while Frontier in the Democratic Republic of Congo produced 24,800 in the first quarter and 68,000 after nine months.
Meanwhile, stockpiles of copper concentrate as at September 30, 2009 decreased by 30 per cent to about 25,500 tonnes of copper in concentrate (Kansanshi 21,900 tonnes, Frontier 3,100 tonnes and Guelb Moghrein 500 tonnes) from the June 30, 2009 level.
Mr Newall said a 35 per cent decrease in the Kansanshi stockpile reflected a full quarter of export shipments following the receipt on May 18, 2009 of a Government exemption on the 15 per cent concentrate export levy.
He said production and stockpile numbers were preliminary and may be subject to final adjustment, adding that further information would be published in the company’s third quarter operating and financial results.

  1. Yes really copper production has gone up but increasing salaries for workers is a damn problem and for the workers who were sent away returning them is a big problem

  2. Signs of recovery.Copper prices have gone up and the Govt should be not continue this Export Levy exemption beyond what was offered.

  3. We want to see the benefits of high copper production, it is not just about producing copper but how it benefits the poor Zambian;; if Zambians cannot benefit why produce it I for one donot see any sence in that ,it is just a waste

  4. Though increased production but no impact on natives social lives. Road to Northwestern province in worst condition since end of Sir Roy Welensky’s federal government. What a shame Zambians!! All the money is being symphoned externally. RB cipuuba sana!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. 1st Quantum is posting positive growth in production and increased revenue whilst our political leaders are seated indwi chibwe no plan. By the time they realise how much country would have lost in revenue the investors would have recouped their money and shall walk away smiling. They have not mentioned gold production figures. Where are our economic experts?

  6. Zambia you do not realise what you have… my heart bleeds that you can sel youself for a song. Lets wake up…

  7. It’s nice to see some bloggers being ‘truly Zambian’, – always finding something negative to say no matter what!

  8. Zambia has sank so low in development because we are so complessant, so much so that we donot see any thing wrong with any one who comes into power untill he has taken every thing from the poor Zambians, who are sturving to death daily .. we cannot allow our relatives to be sturved to death by these greedy leaders who are bursting of obesity at the expense the poor zambians who are dying of hunger in kalingalinga, chibolya etc etc

  9. #11 Shimwalule: well spoken, that is an apt description of a Zambian. Always speaking ill of himself or country. Yesterday on VOA there was this Zambian called Jack who called in to make a contribution. I was expectant, only to hear him give the government’s failure to appeal Chiluba’s acquittal as his example of bad governance without giving a background or the circumstances.

  10. Those guys take risks and use their brains to make money while we are busy feeding ourselves with irresponsible “democracy” and insulting each other. Reminds me of someone who said that if these foreign investors did not extract the copper it would remain underground as ore for another thousand years as potential wealth. We are indeed fast developing into a society of empty drums and associated noises.

  11. “COPPER climbed to a 13-month high of US $6,649 on Friday as upbeat data in the United States and Europe renewed prospects for economic recovery and metals demand.” How much is Zambia getting from this, since our “genius” prez removed the windfall tax?
