Three people have appeared for mention and plea in the Katete magistrate court for alleged abduction and murder of two Katete Girls’ High School pupils contrary to the laws of Zambia.

Before magistrate Chiyaze Chinyama, were Joseph Phiri, 26 of Mnukwa village in Chief Mnukwa’s area in Chipata, Goodson Ndelomani, 32, a business person in Katete and Kenny Njobvu, 28 of Chinyembe village in Chief Madzimawe’s area.

The trio pleaded not guilty to the charge of abduction and murder of Chikondi Namusokwe and Emelia Sakala, both pupils of Katete Girls’ High School.

Facts before the court are that on November 13 this year, the trio jointly and whilst acting together, did abduct and murder two girls who were pupils of Katete Girls’ High School.

Magistrate Chinyama adjourned the case to December 8, 2009 for trial and the three are remanded in custody.

Meanwhile, a report by the Katete Girls High School authorities submitted to the Eastern Province Education Office revealed that four girls, Chikondi Namusokwe, Emelia Sakala, Tracy Tembo and Naomi Nyangu, all in Grade 12, on the fateful day after writing their last examination paper around 16 hours, left school.

According to the report, the girls were picked by a Toyota Ace, registration Number ABP 7224 after they asked the driver to go and pick a trunk belonging to one of their friends from Saint Francis hospital.

The report further revealed that a quarrel ensued between the crew members and the girls but later, they still drove together in the same vehicle.

The report also said upon reaching Katete stores, the driver did not stop but instead continued along the Katete – Mozambique road and this instilled fear in the girls who later started banging on the roof of the vehicle, before they started jumping off the moving vehicle, leading into two of them dying on the spot while the other two were critically injured.

  1. Too bad for the girls – one would expect Grade 12 pupils to be smarter & more careful when dealing with strangers. You don’t get a ride from someone you dont know.
