RB will not be best man at Bingu Wa Mutharika’s wedding

President Rupiah Banda

State House has described the story in Malawi’s Nyasa Times that president Rupiah Banda will be president Bingu Wa Mutharika’s best man during his wedding as a incorrect, misleading and a fabrication.

Special Assistant to the President for Press and Public Relations Dickson Jere in a statement released to media said contrary to media reports, President Banda is not travelling to Malawi to attend the wedding ceremony of his Malawian counterpart, Dr.Wa Mutharika.

“I wish to inform the nation that contrary to media reports, His Excellency, Mr. Rupiah Banda, President of the Republic of Zambia, is not travelling to Malawi to attend the wedding ceremony of his counterpart, His Excellency, Dr. Bingu wa Mutharika, President of the Republic of Malawi,” reads a statement

The statement went on to say that the President and the Zambian Government will instead be represented at the wedding ceremony by First Republican President, Dr. Kenneth Kaunda and Parliamentary Chief Whip, Vernon Mwaanga.

Mr Jere also said that President Banda will be within the country on the day of the wedding.

Meanwhile, First Lady Madam Thandiwe Banda will travel to Malawi to represent the President at the funeral of former Cabinet Minister of Malawi, Dr. Aleke Banda who passed away last week in South Africa.

Dr. Banda, a veteran politician, was a close friend of President Banda. The First Lady will be accompanied by Tourism and Natural Resources Minister Catherine Namugala.

I have asked the question at #7 above because if her is representation of the President in his official capacity means that she is representing the government and will be paid all the allowances and other emoluments that go with it. The Banda family seems to be in it for allowances such that even if RB does not travel, the wife still rakes in the allowances and as #2 Nine Chale has said, “He who laughs last laughs best……”

  11. I have listened to the complaints of my fellow Zambian. I promise I will not be travelling anyhow this time around. I will be sending my beloved one Thandi to Malawi and also to attend the funeral of my friend. I do not want to lose power as yet so I will be indoors even if there is no work to be done. My knee is still troubling me so I may not go to drum up support for Muzungu but will try by all means to go to Milanzi and support Banda. I will issue a statement while in Milanzi for my colleague Muzungu. Let me go to bed now. I am feeling a bit exhausted.

    GBM pays overdue FRA debt?
    By Times Reporter

    LUSAKA businessman Geoffrey Mwamba yesterday paid K2 billion that he owes the Food Reserve Agency (FRA).

    Mr Mwamba, who owns GBM Trucking and Milling Company, confirmed yesterday at 14:00 hours that he had received bank details from FRA lawyers Vincent Malambo and Company.

    He said FRA, through its lawyers, were paid K2.013 billion while the bailiffs’ office was paid K140 million cash.

    Mr Mwamba said K250 million meant for Vincent Malambo and Company would be paid through the Supreme Court since it was supposed to be taxed.

    He maintained that he was paying the money from his petty cash account and did not want to negotiate for instalments.

    I’m not quite sure if I should respond to all these postings addressed to me. I guess the best thing for me to do is to ignore most of them because they are too trivial. For instance, I don’t see why anybody should be seriously bothered with my salutation, regardless of their time zone. If I had to use “Hello”, I know they still would have something negative to say…

    As for my statement on #2, there’s no addition and no subtraction, so bloggers can interpret it the way they feel. Why should I apologise for my opinion or try to defend what I say? My experience is that: unless one finds a way to change human nature, one will always be offended by what people say.

    Having said that, I hope we can all live in peace with the principles of free and fair speech…

  35. OK, I Have just confirmed in the Times of Zambia that GBM has payed the FRA debt he owes from his petty cash account. It is however not confirmed whether or not his junior accountant facilitated the payment. This is good because peasant farmers will now receive their money without any problems.

    I have also confirmed in the Zambia Daily-mail that Finance Bank has reduced lending rates from 23% to 21%.

    I have also confirmed in MUVI TV business news that Ecobank is optimistic lending rates will come down this year.

  40. RB and Mutharika ar friends so I dont see why it would be wrong for RB to act as his friend’s best man at the wedding ceremony. There is no reason why RB could not have travelled to Malawi in a personal capacity. Just because you are president does not mean you are not entitled to a private or social life. Why people are so over-dramatic, God only knows. It seems that the only thing that would satisfy some poeple is if RB was under house arrest at plot one because they complain even when he visits other parts of Zambia as though the country is just Lusaka and it’s environs.

    You ought to know that Zambians have the right to criticise the president when he fails to deliver and when he wastes resources on unproductive trips. If you think he should not be made accountable for what he does then advise him to step down. Even the hard working young Obama is never spared of harsh criticism by Americans, that’s the way to keep checks and balances. The office he holds is very demanding, it is not a holiday camp and whether you like it or not we shall continue to criticise fairly. Your name calling of those who demand practical national service from the president is very unfortunate.

    No offense but I think you need to develop some thick skin. I get criticized, insulted and even have lies told about me almost on a daily basis.

    What you need to do is call them out when they tell lies. I’ll give an example where I am still waiting for proof that I wrote evils on Mpombo and his daughters from Chicago city, smoothcriminal and the other guys and till today, they still have not been able to prove it. What you also need to do is ignore the insults. You do not feed trolls, they’ll keep on coming back. As for criticism, well for me it depends what sort of criticism. If it is respectable, I am willing to have a discussion. There is one blogger I really respect THE SAINT who is non-partisan and criticized me at one time. [tbc

This man has made use of his time travelling and ensure that he secures funds for construction projects and also for MMD (he is very much ahead of the opposition) e.g He has targeted all rural areas with vast projects (Road rehabilitation, bridges, schools, clinics, hospitals – almost all rural constituencies have benefited and thus setting himself securely for 2011). Unfortunately, for the opposition and most of you who follow blindly are busy talking nonsense and insulting. Mind you No! insult will put someone in state house.
