Opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) spokesperson Charles Kakoma has accused the ruling Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) of perpetrating violence in Mufumbwe constituency.
This follows his attack by alleged MMD cadres during campaigns for the April 29 by-election.
On Saturday April 24, 2010, suspected MMD cadres broke into Mr. Kakoma’s hotel room and beat him before he was paraded half naked in Mufumbwe.
Addressing a news conference in Lusaka, Mr. Kakoma accused the MMD of attempting to
kill him.                                                                                                              And Mr. Kakoma has with immediate effect resigned as Secretary of the North-Western Parliamentarians’ Consultative Forum following his beating by the alleged cadres. He said his resignation has been prompted by the violence in Mufumbwe which he said was instigated by some parliamentarians from North-Western Province.
The Forum is chaired by Kasempa MMD Member of Parliament Kabinga Pande who is also Foreign Affairs Minister.

What is happening in Mufumbwe illustrates the danger of placing incompetent, vicious people at the head of any of our state institutions, including government itself.
With Rupiah Banda at the helm of our country, I really fear for the country’s peace between now and election time in 2011.

Zambia has no opposition to provide alternative to the ruling MMD. What we see masquarading as alternatives are nothing but discombulated legion of factionalist sissies without a heart for the country, the people and national character. Just a few days ago LT reported an incident where UPND cadres blocked some roads and smashed any motor vehicle in their sight, including a church vehicle which was parked at the police station. Actually I have not heard UPND leaders condemn the violence not even in the Post, but I have heard MMD officials do so countless times. So on what basis do you blindly condemn only one side? Because the opposition, starting with their leaders, have been preaching violence. They should be shown in no uncertain terms that violence will not be allowed to take root in Zambia. Mr Kabimba is on record as having said he was going to make the country ungovernable – a man who has not won any election. This should be allowed. Hooliganism is rife in the opposition – they can even liken a state president to a dog – only in Zambia (and you can even say so when you are so far away from becoming president).
