The Human Rights Commission has called on the Inspector-General of Police to ensure that the police investigate all cases of violence in Mufumbwe and prosecute all the instigators.

Human Rights Commission Chairperson Pixie Yangailo in a statement that the Inspector General should ensure that the Zambia Police is well prepared to provide security during all elections so that people are comfortable to attend polling stations and cast their votes.

She said this should particularly be a priority during the 2011 general elections.

Mrs. Yangailo said the commission is concerned about the culture of violence during elections that seems to be taking root in Zambia.

She noted that violence in the electoral process is an affront to the fundamental right of the people to freely choose their representatives, and also a serious threat to the right to life, freedom of expression, and freedom of assembly.

Mrs Yangailo said political violence threatens the tenets of a democratic society.

She stated that what transpired during the recent by-election in Mufumbwe should be condemned by all well-meaning Zambians.

The Chairperson said the culture of violence that is being witnessed is threatening the peace and stability that the country has enjoyed since independence and sowing seeds of instability in the nation.

Mrs. Yangailo called on government and political parties to demonstrate leadership and ensure that unruly elements are not give room to destroy the good name of the country and allow the country’s political process to degenerate to levels seen in other countries.

  1. Personally I’m very pleased that Watson Lumba is in detention due for appearance before the judge. Conviction of Watson Lumba is in the best national interest. It will be a clear message to would be extremists that terrorism has no dividends. Peer pressure and trolling may have their pick hours, but there is always a point of individual accountability in life.

For abduction and attempted murder of a peace officer Constable Elijah Chiluba by UPND militias, Watson Lumba must go in for not less than 25 years at Mukobeko Maximum Prison with hard labor while his seat is declared vacant. The verdict has to be a deterrent to extremism.

  2. The Human Rights Commission should know by now that there is no way this inspector general and his police force can arrest MMD thugs. The current Zambia police are there to serve a special clique.

  3. The IG should step down due to being insubordinate to Zambian who raise his salary through tax payer. How can he be an IG if he fails to perform in one constituency what about 2011 it will be total civil war. Let him be professional rather than a cadre.

This is what differentiates the civilized world from the primitive.

  7. Junior police officers in Mpika have observed that it was wrong for the Inspector General of Police (I.G), Francis Kabonde to camp in Mufumbwe during the by-election.
Speaking on condition of anonymity, the junior officers said it was unusual for the I.G to camp in Mufumbwe as if he was part of t6he campaign team.
Officers noted that had the I.G not been there his juniors could have controlled the situation, but could not work effectively because everything was in his hands.
The police said the I.G should have remained in Lusaka to attend to other issues and only receive reports from his men on the ground.
“How can you have the police boss moving to the battle front when he has subordinates, this is rather strange,” the officers said.
They said the I.G’s lack of foresight had…
