Movement for Multi-Party Democracy ,MMD, National Chairman Michael Mabenga has said that the party’s National Executive Committee, NEC, will follow the party constitution to decide Dr. Kalumba’s fate in the party this week.

Mr Mabenga told QFM in a telephone interview that the party constitution is clear on the matter and that the decision of the party will be based on the constitution.

Mr Mabenga disclosed that the National Executive Committee will this week meet to discuss the way forward following Dr. Kalumba’s conviction.

Dr Kalumba together with six his co-accused were convicted by a Lusaka Magistrate court last week in a long running corruption trial.

Meanwhile, convicted MMD National Secretary Katele Kalumba has declined to state whether or not he will step-down as the ruling party’s chief executive officer. Asked in an interview with QFM this morning whether he intends to step-down from his position following his conviction by a Lusaka Magistrate court last week on corruption charges, Dr Kalumba said he has restrained himself from issuing statements to the media.

Dr. Kalumba who is also Chiengi Member of Parliament said he could not say anything on the matter because he has chosen to remain quite.

The Former finance minister sentenced to 5-years imprisonment with hard labour for corruption last week said he will not respond to the media until further notice.

  1. Poor standard of reporting!

Couldnt the reporter just have checked what the MMD constitution says…the story just falls off a cliff!!

  2. Its upto our NEC to decide the fate of our beloved leader Katele. If you are not MMD please do not offer any comments on issues outside your party. You guys in other parties have the tendency to open your mouths even when you do not understand MMD operations. Viva Katele Viva MMD… and Im still waiting to confirm reports of our beloved president’s death in Paris.

  3. #1 If the MMD has a constitution that is , i bet it is in RB’s head. And even if they have a constitution the would not follow it if it were not in their interest. Everything is so personal and based on who bootlicks the leader the most

  4. number 1 ala i feel your pain, the standards of reporting on LT are quiet low. When is the MMD meeting, where? what does the parliamentary code of conduct say? what does the MMD constitution say? This is some of the information that would make the article complete and informative

  5. Mr CDF!! NEC should also decide on you, remember the CDF money you stole
wrong chap to be issuing such statements, this man was found guilty of embezzeling community development funds by the courts, mwanawasa fired him, now he’s back to steal some more
    MMD is full of thieves

  6. # 3 Katele didnt steal MMD money he stole Zambians money so we have the right to comment and say whatever we can it is our money afterall

  7. Senior Citizen you say “and Im still waiting to confirm reports of our beloved president’s death in Paris”! Are yu going nuts! Which President is dead? RB? Yu seem to be in your own world, schizophrenic of course! And why should you stop others commenting on Kalumba’s matter when you comment on pact issues. Schizo yalakupwa!

  8. Delivering a ruling yesterday in Lusaka, Justice Dennis Chirwa, sitting with Chief Justice Ernest Sakala, Judge Ireen Mambilima, Judge Sandson Silomba and Judge Lombe Chibesakunda also said the High Court should have recommended for the prosecution of Mr Mabenga for using Constituency Development Funds (CDF) for his election without approval from the CDF committee.
The court said it was wrong for Mr Mabenga to use K29.8 million CDF because Parliament had been dissolved at that time and he was no longer the MP for Mulobezi.
“There are no minutes or authority from the constituency development committee to allow the withdrawal of the funds which were clearly used to support the appellant in his election campaigns,” Justice Chirwa said.

  9. He said since Mr Mabenga also admitted having used a Government vehicle to ferry indunas (traditional leaders) to Mulobezi it was quite clear that he wanted to corrupt them into being partisan in the elections and later influence their subjects to vote for him.
Mr Mabenga was also found guilty of having distributed medical drugs to the electorate shortly before elections so that they could vote for him.
Justice Chirwa said the claim by Mr Mabenga that he had got the drugs from Medical Stores for supply to the people in Mulobezi because of an outbreak of a strange disease could not be accepted as evidence because such duties could have been done in liaison with the local hospital.

  10. The honourable thing to do for katele kalumba is to resign. get a leaf from the british secretary of treasury who resigned over expense claims . though not bad as katele’s case he chose to resign as he fe;lt his intergrity has been compromised to hold a position in govt. i wonder when africans will start copying such things

  11. Senior Citizen chipuba! Katele Kalumba nikabolala! Michael Mabenga is also convict! That’s the MMD for you!

  12. So Katele can’t just resign on his own seeing that the game is over for him but would rather wait to be pushed.

  13. Senior Citizen’s dementia has been exposed,Did Katele steal MMD money or Taxpayers? pliz spare us your street wisdom.Katele should not hide behind not issuing statements in the media, let him resign or we resurrect TETA to hound him out:-??:-??:-??:-??:-??

  14. There is no integrity in MMD and hence in the MMD governemnt. MMD Consultant FTJ Chiluba the BIG thief, MMD Chairman Mabenga the CDF thief, MMD National Secretary Katele Kalumba the convicted thief, VJ Mwaanga the DRUG trafficker, etc etc…….
What a party- No wonder Zambia’s hour has been stuck at 13:00hrs of 1991 when the pigmy thief took over to preside over a Government of THIEVES, BY THIEVES FOR THIEVES.

  15. MMD has become a haven for thieves and the corrupt. Mabenga was condemned by a court of law and look where he is in MMD! What is expected from the MMD NEC is that they will support and shield their man Katele. The only reason they might choose to honour their constitution and possibly chuck out Katele is because he has somehow indicated some presidential ambitions and therefore might be an obstacle for their boss, and hence should be cleared. The conviction might prove a convinient godsend for the MMD NEC!

  16. A by election on the Copperbelt.A by election in Western Province.Wapya Munzi! Viva pact already. We told you RB,do away with FTJ but you thought you were clever.Wait for these 2 elections and it will be clear to you that you are packing with FTJ back in court. This is so sweet to be true mwebantu!

  17. Katele’s issues are being dealt with within our own MMD ranks! This is a PF-UPDN issue period! We as MMD are behind our beloved servant in the name of Dr. Kalumba. This is an internal issue and should not be taken as ridicule for all malicious and short sighted outsiders who are just on here for the primary reason of just blogging. Dr. Katele my brother be assuredly encouraged that the whole nation is behind you!

  18. Even Mabenga is a thief,The Supreme Court told the people of Zambia plainly to arrest Mabenga because he stole Constituency Development Funds. Its shameful that he still continues as Party Chairman for the Movement for Mass Destruction (MMD).

  19. Katele thieved our money and should resign any from anything he is doing, including MMD, otherwise MMD will be full of convicted criminals. We also looking into RB’s dealings and i can assure ou that he will be in court next year. The Donors have given him money for roads and all the contracts via RDA are being given to currupt and inept developers.
2011 – However votes MMD is a thief by association!

  20. In an event we lost our presid (God 4 bid) wed go 4 a by election and again in 2011 what a terrible constitution. With sata so no elections.

  21. Iwe chi Senior Citizen bwamber bobe. Chi Katele committed these crimes when he was in government. Bushe iwe ilichituntulu? It seems you can`t even reason. Do you have a brain?:-w

  22. #26 Senior citizen, you went into hiding immediatelly the Conviction of Kalumba was made known on LT. We looked for you so much! But what do you mean when you tell Kalumba that “…the whole nation is behind you…” Which nation? what people? please spare us these fallacies of generalisation. VJ is already preparing himself!! MMD party of crooks. Movement for Master Dribblers!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  23. Guys ,,,I thinkSenior Citizen Napena or he is the one with RB in paris. Senior Citizen has his friend acting on his behalf. The writting style of this new Senior citzen is not corrsponding to that of the old Senior Citizen. Now I agree that Senior Citizen works at the Zambian embassy USA. I have noted that when ever the president is out in Europe or America, Senior Citizen disappears. REALLY HE IS DESPARATE FOR HE KNOWS THAT HE IS LOSING THE JOB COME 2011.

  24. It is not up to mmd you fools to decide, these thugs stole tax payers money not your stupid mmd’s money. that is our money not only for mmd thugs.

  25. It is sad, good leaders in mmd are at the mercy of the thugs, becouse the thungs are controlling the party. tuma things like FTJ he can even stand proudly that he never stole public money, God help us. this guy has no shame. he was a curse to Mother Zambia to say the least.

  26. Once in power, the pact will move to prosecute Mabenga for abuse of CDF as recommended by the Hon. Judges of the superium court. MMD is a party that requires to be cleaned up if not wiped off the face of the Zambian political landscape. Viva Pact

  27. Senior Citizen i believe it is only right that people talk about Katele. You can not monopolise him as MMD when he was and stilll remains a national leader by virtue of belonging to the ruling party. At the end of the day these are things that people will be looking at as they decide who their national leaders should be.
The money stolen was for the state and not MMD. You should be bold enough to accept when things are not right.Dont gag the people.
