Vice president George Kunda (l) looks as Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane signs a bilateral agreement with the Chinese in Lusaka

Zambia and China have this afternoon signed two agreements on economic and technical co-operation. The agreements will see Zambia benefit from Chinese grants and interest free loans.

Finance Minister Situmbeko Musokotwane signed on behalf of Zambia, while Chong Quan who is the Vice Commerce Minister of China signed on behalf of his country.

The signing ceremony was witnessed by Vice President George Kunda and visiting Vice Prime Minister of China Hui Liang

The two countries also signed two Memorada of Understanding to strengthen their agriculture sectors.

Agriculture Minister Eustackio Kazonga signed for Zambia while China’s Vice Minister of Agriculture Niu Dun signed for his country.

The other MoU was signed by Zambia Development Agency Chief Executive Officer Andrew Chipwende and Chairman of the National group of China Liu Shenli.

And Vice President George Kunda has said that China provides opportunities to many areas which are critical to Zambia’s economic development.

Mr Kunda said Prime Minister Hui’s visit to Zambia will create further channels of co-operation and enhance bilateral relations.

And Mr Hui said Zambia and his country have continued to enjoy long standing mutual and cordial relations.

Meanwhile President Rupiah Banda and visiting Chinese vice Premier Hui Liangyu are this afternoon expected to officiate at the ground breaking ceremony for the construction of a multi-billion Kwacha Lusaka stadium.

The ultra modern sports facility, to be built next to the old stadium, will be the second the Chinese government will construct, after the Ndola Stadium which is expected to be completed later this year.

In the last five years, the Zambia national soccer team has been playing its home games at Konkola Stadium in Chililabombwe after the grand stand at Independence Stadium was demolished to pave way for a new structure.

The independence stadium has not been operational after it was declared unfit by the world football governing body FIFA.

  2. How come Finance minister Musokotwane looks like Professor Stephen Simukanga, the UNZA vice chancellor and once my lecturer at UNZA school of mines. Has anyone observed this.
I am not an MMD supporter but I support this investment the chinese govt is bringing to our country, despite the stu.pid.ity of their chinese nationals in our country.

  3. very good progress in the right direction
i believe working with the chinese is very rewarding and we need to keep our eyes focussed
shall we invest into sustainable development and infrastructure which will in the long run pay back to us and our children

  4. @HOLA
I dont think thats Situmbeko Musokotwane. He looks exactly like Prof Simukanga for sure. Coming to think of it, it should be him otherwise I dont think Simukanga would be signing a document with GK peeping like that

  5. This is the only thing I praise RB about, to upgrade soccer stadiums. The late president didn’t know anything about football, and he did nothing in sports. And now he is promoting Agriculture with the Chinese, it is really good. This is what RB is good at Football & Farming.

  6. #3 You are right this is professor Steven Simukanga. The LT reporter seem to be getting everything wrong. They do not do their homework well.

  7. Our Phd students have told us for years that the IMF World Bank loans are bad for our country. Not long ago we rejoiced to hear the cancellation of Zambia’s debt. It seems we’re back where KK left our country’s debt. These chinese interest free loans are the way to go for the country

  8. People of Zambia open your eyes the Govt of Zambia is saying life is easy now and are busy getting grants and yet their put the burden on us Zambian ,how can we be paying k270,000 road tax k100,000 carbon which there do not understand.Imagin 50,000 cars average mutiple by k370,000 it gives K18,500,000,000 all this amount Vote them out their are thiefs.plus electricity at home average k150,000 every month and water k150,000 people who is benefing serious.FUEL 450,000 EVERY MONTH

  9. To what extent are these loans genuinely ‘INTEREST FREE’. No one can give you money without taking into consideration the its depreciating value in the long run. The money may be interest free as claimed but will burden us heavily in future. And do we need the loans? Why not introduce windfall tax so that the government can gain from our resources instead of being loaned money that they are getting from our copper. Musokotwane, learn from your coleagues in Botswana?

  10. #6 I live in ndola and the stadia groundwork was started long before Levy died. The guys moved to the new site after they failed to agree on the old dag hamaskjoeld site in late 2007. but you are right he didn’t know about soccer though he was able to build for the soccer loving zambians. the Ndola, lusaka & livingstone stadia were levy vision when he agreed to host the 2011 all africa games. In we lost him and inlate 2009 RB said we can’t host the 2011 games & that is why the Lusaka stadium hasn’t been in a hurry to be built

  11. Be prudent in grant funds management. we have a tendancy of relaxing to employ prudent management on grants——-
put it to good use of the public…………..esp secio sector that has degenerated overtime.
how can people leaving 1km from statehouse still drinking shallow well waters???? what a shame!!!!

  12. The Vice Premier of China is Li Keqiang who is in the UK leading a huge delegation and signing deals with a value of £2.6 billiion.

  15. There is nothing like a free loan please. How can a loan be free??? Can someone tell me what will happen to the Artificial turf investment that went into the Independence stadium. If this country were a company it would have gone under by now. Had it been a millionaire in the US it would have been filing for Chapter 11 cover.

  16. Zambia WILL be one of the top ten fastest growing economies in the WORLD in the next five years according to the Economist and the BBC. We owe this incredible success to the late Mr. Mwanawasa and Mr. Rupiah Banda. If Mr Sata gets in we shall be in the bottom ten. No doubt about that.

  17. something funny happening or is it LTs poor reporting?this guy is not the chinese vice prime.the vice prime minister is in the uk.LT cornfirm your reporting.

  18. Zambia does not need “Grants or Low Interest Loan MY FOOT”. We have Copper where we should get the money we need to develop. Only a FOOL like MMD DOGS would go out looking to borrow the same money been made in the same Country. Comeon get on and do what you’re suppossed to be doing Shrek. There is no need for you to be looking for Loans or Grants when we have the money we need right in this Country.

  19. the chinese are enslaving us by giving us free stuff.there is nothing you get for nothing, wake up zambia we are selling ourself short once again.

  20. I read an article that the VP of China is in Zambia, and yet there is a VP from China who is visiting the UK and saw him with David Cameron on the news, so who is this VP in Zambia?

  21. Our govt ministers do not read the small prints of these things they sign for? They are selling the country to the Chinese?
