High fuel prices, a set back to economic growth – Mpombo

Share

Former Defence Minister George Mpombo has observed that the increase in the fuel prices is a set back to the growth of the economy.
Mr. Mpombo says all the economic gains that the country has been recording will be affected in a negatively.

He wondered how the Zambian government will continue preaching about the measures to grow the economy when the cost of living is growing.

He says that good policies that were initiated by the late Levy Mwanawasa will be adversely affected by the current regime.

He added that policies that were initiated by the late president have been bearing fruits, and that it is a pity that the Rupiah Banda administration wants to wipe them out.

  1. I don’t want to sound rude but please Late Levy was not the epitome of leadership in Zambia. Nothing special to write home about.

There were a lot of failures under him and in fact corruption was on the increase coupled with nepotism (family tree). He was a polarising leader.

Mpombo, please stop your grandiosities of Levy and focus on the way forward

  2. mpombo was energy minister and was fired by levy mwanawasa for causing the worst critical fuel shortage this country ever exprienced. and when the pumps did start plowing the price had skyrocketted. wello mpombo and mmembe are now best ballies hahahaha LOL

  3. Yes, high fuel prices will harm growth. This is particularly true for a large, thinly populated country like Zambia with the worst effects felt on agriculture and in outlying areas.

What do about this is another matter. Over the last 3 months, oil prices have increased by around 15% from USD 85 to 100 per barrel and the Kwacha has slipped by about 4% against the USD (from K4,500 to 4,700?). Meanwhile our diesel price (which is what I buy) has increased by around 15% suggesting govt has at least protected us from the exchange rate effects of the global increase. Still something like 35-45% of our pump price is made up of tax, giving GRZ considerable room to maneuver (…and meaning they could do more?!?). Except lower tax means less revenue that has to be made up elsewhere.

  4. Have you paid the 4million the court ordered you to pay? Dont use a post-dated cheque this time. those cheques are illegal anywhere

  5. Pipo ,no matter how you hate somebody becoz of his past, when a point is made ,let us just agree.Fuel in any Economy is vital and affects production cost.No one can argue with this Fact.Even with your own Vehicle if you spend K 500,000.00 on fuel, you can’t allow passengers who can pay K100.00,you have to charge something to also cover your costs. So, us poor zambians are suffering becoz of a few pipo who are comfortable.

  6. i would have appreciated Mpombo if he could itemise what needs to be done than has not been done don’t tell us the obvious. of course we knoe high fuel prices are negatively affecting the global economy not just zed. he thinks the citizens are st upid.just tell us what should be done if you are sincere. then we can judge you fairly. not praising LPM just because it fit you.

  7. Mpombo is a dimwit though he calls others dimwits. He is not qualified to talk as if he knows anything about fuel seeing he failed to run the Ministry of Energy. The current fuel prices have nothing to do with Levy’s demise. We eooxpect more fuel price increases especially with the political upheavals in the Middle East and North Africa. Mpombo should stop glorifying the dead at the expense of contributing to national development. How are we to solve these problems? We need solutions not just criticism!!!

  8. #11, VJ – it sees LT has posted the same article twice so there are two threads for this one story. I would suggest they merge the two postings if possible.
