$30m Taiwan loan squeezes Sata

Patriotic Front (PF) president Michael Sata is reportedly under pressure from the Taiwanese Green Party (GP) to pay back close to US$ 30 million he is alleged to have gotten to finance his 2006 and 2008 campaigns in exchange for land.

Former PF secretary general Edward Mumbi confirmed in Lusaka yesterday that Mr Sata had obtained “millions of dollars” from the Taiwanese who he had promised to give some land if he won the elections.

“Yes I can confirm that Mr Sata collected millions from the Taiwanese. He had promised to give them some land in Luapula if he won the elections. He actually auctioned some land,” he said.

Mr Mumbi said the huge debts that the opposition leader had was the reason why he had become desperate for power.

He said it was sad that Mr Sata had auctioned the land even when he was not Republican president.

“Now that the funders have realised that he (Mr Sata) has no capacity to lead the country they are now demanding their money back,” he said.

He said the US$27, 000 dollars that was seized by South African authorities before the 2006 general elections was part of the money that the opposition leader was getting from the Taiwanese Green Party which has since lost elections.

“He used to collect the money from South Africa but the authorities in that country started following him and that is how they seized the money in 2006. Then he started using Malawi and he was also detected and even deported,” he said.

PF sources revealed in Lusaka yesterday that Mr Sata was under pressure to pay back the more than $30 million which he borrowed.

Efforts to get a comment from Mr Sata and the opposition party’s spokesperson and secretary general Wynter Kabimba failed.

    So Mr. Sata has changed his stance once again and this time on Taiwan. This further shows Mr. Sata’s inconsistencies. I would not dismiss what Mr. Mumbi is stating just yet. They might be some truth to it especially if you consider Mr. Sata’s change in opinion on Taiwan.

  43. The Taiwanese are not foolish. Why would anyone give $30m to an African opposition party? The Taiwanese Green Party was formed in 1996. They like many Green parties around the world are environmentalists. In the last legislative or parliamentary elections in 2008 the Green Party like it has always done failed to get a single sit. In the most unlikely event that Sata got $30m from the Taiwanese, the only party that would have given him the money is the Nationalist Party or the Kuomitang who are committed to the overthrow of the Communist Party on the Mainland. Honestly this rubbish from Mumbi should be dismissed with the contempt it deserves. Why would a small unelectable Taiwanese Party give some nondescript African $30m? This revelation is true because Sata was even deportated from Malawi in 2006 to collect money from the same Taiwanese, and was even furious with the GRZ of Malawi. What i mean is if you are at that level, take time to go through what each of these leaders is promising and you will wonder when you bring each of them to the public media to explain how they intend to achieve whatever they have lined up in their manifesto. If the Taiwanese wanted land, they would have got the land for free from the government – even in Luapula Province: HE RB is always on the lookout for investors! Zambians spend so much time debating lies until the person being lied about is asked to defend himself, and when the person thinks ‘this is too silly to waste my time on’ the conclusion is drawn that he has something to hide!

Worse still we Zambians are struggling to get land in our own country and then somebody wants to give it away in the name of winning elections!   91. I just want to agree with #5 – and I want to add that the MEDIA in Zambia are increasingly becoming URGENTS of POVERTY. They are not building Zambian Pride which is necessary for innovation and forward looking. While our politicians are responsible for making policies, development is about people involvement. People cannot be involved if they are not appropriately informed. Our media know very little about Zambia that is why the run to empty minds such as Mumbi to create news. In the UK both Labour & Torries had overdrafts to fund their campaigns before the election last year and still owe this money to banks up to day. The same happens to political parties in German, France & USA.

  149. There is no legislation that states it is illegal to be gay or lesbian, therefore Sata was right to say the Zambian constitution recognizes Gays and lesbians. Zambian constituition does not discriminate which therefore makes it acceptable to every zambian. Unless such a time it is specifically mentioned that gayism is illegal, it remains legal.
