Mongu Central Prisons Officer In-Charge Superintendent Moses Chipokolo Malaishya disclosed the development to ZANIS in Mongu.

Superintendent Malaishya said Government has put up a number of deliberate conditions to help decongest prisons across the country.

He urged inmates who were still in prisons to continue exhibiting good behaviour and abide by parole conditions.

The Officer In-Charge appealed to the general public to accept the parolees who have been released in society.

Mr Malaishya said the general public had an important role in the lives of parolees once released from prison.

He further appealed to parents and relatives of the released persons to show love and support in order to help them adapt into society.

The Prisons Services is currently releasing inmates from prisons across the country on parole condition.

Parole is the supervised release of a prisoner before completion of their sentence in prison.

  1. Will this campaign gimmick help Rupiah to regain grounds in Western Province? The chap’s desperation has now reached alarming levels now. Every day he does things to buy votes and I’m sure he regrets not listening to the people. We are enjoying the DON’T KUBEBA slogan. Get gifts from Rupiah and MMD but in the booth you know what to do.
2011,YEAR OF THE WIND OF CHANGE.
BE PART OF THE BALLOT REVOLUTION.
VOTE MICHAEL SATA AND PF COME 2011.

  2. 1// You are missing the point.
There is nothing political about the release of citizens on parole because the consititution gives whoever is President such powers regardless of whether or not its an electon year. Even if you do not support RB, you do not lose anything by being reasonable and avoiding misleading others.

  3. @#2, sometimes things never occur by coincidence. Squashing housing debt, releasing prisoners just after kuomboka and in an election year, and soon for your information all the chaps who were rounded up during the 14 jan saga will walk free in the name of nolle. all these powers are from rb the nolle being exercised by rb thru mchenga. how i wish we could grow up and do politics that are real not this rubbish heap of crap we have as multipartism in zed

  4. #2 I understand that law, but the timing and the place where it is taking place speak volumes of the intention behind it. Zambian are now too intelligent to see beyond the constitutional privileges of the president. The fact that it is a campaign tactic cannot be disputed no matter how much you can justfy the move.

  5. Most people in prison are those under privileged. Release them and get the real culprits. I salute you RB for the insight. Continue doing so. we need these youths to develop our country. prisons are not the best places. We need a lot of time with our children and educate them about the sense of belonging to the country. I am not a politician but I will vote for RB.

  6. #8, education is very important, as long as you pay tax ( I mean any type of tax), you will be stupid to say that you are not a politician! and if you think your rb is the best Presidential candidat, wait and see Zamtel getting on rocks due to fianncial problems becouse they are now operating on 25% shares, You will not be able to blog as internet will not be accesible, no cell phones, etc, as the company will not be able to subscribe to the international gateway. All this is due to rupiah’s poor governance. You are the reason this counthry is what it is.

  7. #1, can’t you learn even simple things, like Mr Sata cannot be the change that people wish for this country? Mr Sata can only bring change if by “change”, PF means taking us backwards. If “change” means taking the nation forward, then RB is already well on the path to the future Zambia.

  8. #10! tell me one significant economic development indicator Rupiah has scored during his term, maybe I will change my mind on who to vote for. Until you convince me on this, the only things I know which Rupiah has done is; 1) Failed to adress the nation when Chines shot your brothers in mamba, 2) Ran away from adressing the nation in 2009 on labourday( bear in mind that this is the year when mines were closed and many of your brothers losed jobs on the copperbelt), he instead went to Zimbabwe and cried that he was born there, 3) Failed to adressed the nation on the barotse land Agreeement activists( only made a coment at the airport in Malawi), saying its just a small group of disgrantled PF cadres), 4) Carelessly and unprudently privatised Zamtel, together with the gateway (and now zamte

  9. Coment #11 continued…………..Zamtel is now operating on 25% shares after the freeezing of the 75% LAP green stake in the former parastatal( bear in mind that zamtel will soon have dificulties in making subscriptions to the international gateway due to financial dificulties, 5) Brought politics of violence back which was not the case during our late beloved PRESIDENT (may his soul rest in peace) Mwanawasa, 6) Has failed to issue even a simple statement to address the nation on the chinese who ROASTED your brothers at the Ndola stadium recently, Killed the fight against CORRUPTION and brought it back. ALL THIS IN THE SPAQCE OF TWO YEARS! my heart bleeds thinking of all this.

  10. He is forgetting that there are more people outside prison than inside. and these outside are bitter because the criminals whom they made sure faced the law are now set loose.

  11. No. 6. E.g a Ghost.

On a serious note, the release is a mere coincidence. It is all over the country as before. The reporter just singled Mongu for his own reasons.

  12. I just hope they have learned a lesson or two. If they go treason again they must be locked up. We don’t want Rwanda in Zambia.

  13. 10// You have a point. Its like some Zambians are so conivinced that Mr.Sata is the only answer to bring about the much preached change. Sometimes change itself needs to be changed for meaningful development to be achieved. Our friends in the PF ought to realize that their candidate is not a Savior at all and has a high propensity to frustrate foreign investment going by his inconsistence and unpredictability.

  14. #10 Sorry sir, Your father RB does not listen to the people e.g. on the failed constitution, on mobil hospitals,on Chiluba’s dubious acquitos, on Zamtel sale, on his aimless trips,on windfall tax, this list is endless. So we need someone else who can revive the hopes of us the poor.
But on agriculture Mwanawasa’s policy,RB has made a good continuation. The worst thing is his association with Chiluba in whom we just see a thief.

  15. Some compaign gimics are dangerous !! releasing criminals back into society won’t solve our ailling political troubles neither will it help us develop !! be more realistic and Lusakatimes is a piece of nonsense, always lamblasting the opposition !!

  16. 18. Criminals are not born in jail: neither are they intended to stay there for good. With good conduct, they earn remission and are also eligible for parole. Kindly don’t politicise parole! The president also has no hand in who goes out on parole. His mandate is limited to amnesty release. Thank you.

  17. No 19, you are sensible and i agree with u. parole is a good programme that was started sometime in 2008, i ve read so much about it since then, i also head about prisoners being released last year 2010 in lusaka, kabwe, chipata and ndola, no one of these guys commenting today appreciated the move may b because their relatives were among those released but because today it has happened in mongu it has become RB’s political campaign weapon. wait until u are in prison then you will know wat parole means and if releasing u will mean campaign. Thanx

  18. @ Mercy, #14. Actually these guys had nothing to do with the chaos in Mongu earlier this year. They’ve been in prison for all sorts of things, just like other prisoners across the country.

  19. It reminds me of Pontious Pilate releasing the criminal Barabas at the expense of Jesus to appease the masses. What extent politicians go to to earn votes never ceases to amaze!

  20. # 16: what we need is quality investment. Whoever wins the elections should ensure that Zambians do not get the short-end of the stick as is currently obtaining. PF/Sata has been consistent on that one. We do not need to beg for foreign investments. Investors need us because of the quality of our natural resources that they can only find in limited countries. Investors that shoot Zambians, insult Zambians and pay slave wages and at the same time evading tax are not the kind of investors that we want.
Back to the story: Releasing prisoners in Mongu now definitely excites people with analytical minds to speculate that it is a political gimmick, just like “giving” houses to tenants on the CB and directing that title deeds be issued pronto. Rupia is very desperate!
