Prioritize poverty reduction in 2012 budget, government urged

Share

The Civil Society for Poverty Reduction (CSPR) has charged that government has to prioritize poverty reduction as it prepares the 2012 national budget.

CSPR Executive Director Patrick Mucheleka says it is surprising that despite the country recording economic growth in the past years, people have continued to live in abject poverty.

Mr. Mucheleka explained that this time around, the national budget should contain attainable benchmarks on poverty reduction.

He says the Civil Society expects to see enhanced service delivery and improved livelihood of the majority Zambians.

Mr. Mucheleka called on government to pay attention to the trickle down effect where growth will translate into the creation of employment for the youths and reduced cost of living.

  1. I think the private sector, small as it is should have a greater hand in poverty reduction, unfortunately they find it easy to exploit the poor, the table turns once more. I would like for the GRZ to allow for faster private sector growth..sustainable, guided growth. First thihngs first, back to the basics; ONE ZAMBIA!!!! ONE NATION!!!! Someone managed to convince us this motto was out dated, truth is we need it to get this back in our minds for anything to grow.

  2. Worry not because more money will be in your pockets for ever beginning next year.

  3. @Litunga what the hell would make you think this way? Do you plan to get an extra job or rob a bank? Did you read my post? I said SUSTAINABLE GROWTH, we are hardly growing as it is and if you keep spending the little money that ought to help you tomorrow we’ll all end up right back here regardless of who rules. I think I remember LPM speaking of the same, we have to control our expenditures, tighten our belts.Think of it as a dam collect reserves in as many ways possible even education wise. The chinese managed it for 30 years, today they are growing into the world’s largest economy, a super power in military , industry, sci-tech and everything else. Let’s give ourselves a chance to learn from others.

  4. Luke – plasee stop this ill-informed snearing. The Council’s funding of so called “bloodsucking property speculators” ( I presume by this you mean the highly acclaimed plans for New Dalston)is regenerationing the area. It encourages nice young couples into the borough and nasty low rent plebs to move up north. This policy is actually doing wonders for the borough’s child poverty figures and is motivated by the highest socialist principles.
