THE Zambia Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU) has described Patriotic Front president Michael Sata as an irresponsible leader who does not care about the welfare of Zamtel and its workers.
ZCTU secretary general Roy Mwaba said there are thousands of workers who depend on the smooth operations of Zamtel to earn a living, who will be affected should people boycott services being offered by the institution.
He was reacting to Mr Sata’s statement in which he urged Zambians to boycott Zamtel services.
Mr Mwaba said Zamtel generates funds and pays billions of Kwacha to the Zambia Revenue Authority (ZRA), contributing to the country’s economic development.
He said apart from the company paying taxes to Government, workers also contribute their pay as you earn (PAYE) to the national treasury.
“When Mr Sata talks of people boycotting Zamtel services, he is actually against the workers because once people stop using these facilities, how will the company raise money to pay the workers?” Mr Mwaba asked.
He said Mr Sata is fighting the same workers he has been promising to protect and empower.
“As a labour movement and workers’ representatives, we want politicians to concentrate on issue-based campaigns. We don’t want leaders who want to scare away investors. We are all aware of the situation in Libya, but the United Nations hasn’t said that people should boycott using services for companies owned by Libyans,” he said.
Mr Mwaba urged Mr Sata to set aside politics and put workers’ welfare first.

Mwaba does have a point. It is not right for Mr. Sata to advocate the boycott of an institution regardless of whether or not it is a subject of corruption. There is a legal process that he could follow if he wished to challenge those that have engaged in corruption. It is not the company nor its workers that must suffer on account of “ALLEGED” corruption. It is simply irresponsible in my eyes. Also I think Mr. Mwaba is right to ask politicians to desist from populist inflammatory remarks of this nature. He may well be in bed with MMD, but that is a red herring on the matter at hand.

Roy Mwaba’s statements of late have been most unfortunate ,to say the least, for the credibility of ZCTU. I don’t even know if its affilliates condone such utterances. Trade unionism has really gone to the dogs or is it the other way round ?

It is sad that Sata is asking the nation to boycott Zamtel services. What will happen to people’s jobs? Doesn’t Sata know that there are PF supporters who work for Zamtel? It is sad. I have observed that the PF is largely being supported by ruffians who are bereft of reason. I have also seen that most people who support the MMD are those with fine and sepreme brains. Those supporting Sata see blue where there is white: they see red where there is green. They are head less.

The SATA has not changed from the time he was MMD. Most of the MMD ugly face was created by this Man. He sat in a Cabinet that saw liquidation of 100 of companies, while the law at that time provided paying workers less than K100.00 in benefits. He sat in a cabinet that saw liquidation of our only airline Zambia Airways whose assets were more than its liabilities( buildings and equipment). This man is heartless. He does not see beyond his nose. That why u find in 2006 he presented a different manifesto…..in 2011 he come with a totally different manifesto copied from MMD and UPND by Bob Sichinga. what has changed btn 2006 and 2011. From my understanding of Sata, he is just a populist, meaning he is a Master of Ceremonies (MCs). He says what people want to hear and laugh to. Most MCs (Master of Ceremonies) are very popular, but when they are doing their job, they are not to be taken seriously. MCs are comedians, they make us laugh, and make us pay attention to what they are saying, most of which borders on the comical and not real. Mcs will, for example, tell you that actually Rome can be built in 90 days, which is not true. MCs will also make you salivate when they tell you that you will have more money than you can ever want in your pockets. When you ask them how possible this feat is, the MCs, becoz they are comedians, will tell you that just at the shout of abracadabra, you will have more money in your pockets!
