UNITED Party for National Development (UPND) youths say they will only accept to revive the pact with the Patriotic Front (PF) if their president Hakainde Hichilema is considered to stand as presidential candidate for the alliance during the 2011 elections.
UPND national youth chairman Joe Kalusa said in an interview in Ndola yesterday that the party could only accept to revive the pact with PF if Mr Hichilema is flouted as pact presidential candidate.
“As UPND youths we will only welcome the pact if it will be headed by Mr Hichilema. As you know, our party was marginalised a lot during the pact with PF,” Mr Kalusa said.
He also said that once the pact is revived, there should be a commitment letter from Mr Sata indicating that he has accepted Mr Hichilema as the pact presidential candidate for the 2011 elections.
“UPND wasted a lot of time when it was in the pact as it was being sidelined on many issues regarding the pact, and they also called us a lot of names,” Mr Kalusa said.
He said UPND youths will not support the revival of the pact without PF accepting Mr Hichilema as presidential candidate.
Mr Kalusa said UPND is ready to contest this year’s tripartite elections without being in a pact with PF.
Mr Sata has reportedly made a dramatic U-turn and is seeking reconciliation with UPND for a possible revival of the defunct political alliance.
Mr Sata seekks to reconcile with the UPND because he has allegedly realised that the MMD will win this year’s elections.
Mr Sata held a meeting with his party members on June 13, 2011 at the PFsecretariat where the matter was tabled.
And when contacted for a comment, PF secretary-general Wynter Kabimba refused to give a comment saying he does not speak to the Zambia Daily Mail and the Times of Zambia before cutting the line.

If HH dwells on reviving the PF/UPND pact, then this will entail the end of his political life. Political scientists cannot ignore the Chiluba factor which has ushered in a devastating blow to the PF. The current climate has unleashed a devastating tornado such that if HH displays childish inconsistencies and chooses to ride on PF-BOAT, then both PF and UPND sailors will be swept away by a storm into unknown political oblivion. HH must learn to respect the fears, feelings and aspirations held by the greatest majority among the Tonga voters.

The article before did not say HH was seeking the restoration of the PACT but Sata and his PF. Kalusa is just giving his conditions what is wrong with that? No party trusts the PF because of their inconsistences. PF approached a number of parties to to PACT with after the demise of the one with UPND. None were interested. Kalusa has laid down his conditions TAKE IT OR LEAVE IT. Afterall its Sata and PF who are that desperate to go to plot one. HH can still contest even the next 3 elections, no problema.

This argument that only a young person can lead the nation is misplaced. Just as a reminder, FTJ was only 48 when he became President. Look where he lead the country! Politics of the pocket became the order of the day – things that never happend when KK, Gile Zulu and other old people were leaders. HH and UPND are aware of the fact that the death of the PACT had a comparatively greater effect on SATA and his PF — so politically they care less about SATA. And Sata has a wrong impression that he is populor in places like the Western & Southern Province. Well he is likely to get reasonable votes in Mongu and possibly Livingstone, but that is about all.
He seems, like his tribesmen, not to fully understand political dynamics of Lozi and Tonga people who, if they think you talk too much for them to waste energy, will listening to you but kiss good bye to your ideologies when you are out of site. We now know that their votes count.
Off course there are (very few) exeptions like Fred Namakando Mmembe. But what do you expect – Namakando changes stance in a similar fashion as Sata.
