Uranium Ore Stocks at Lumwana Increase

Share

The Uranium Ore being mined at Lumwana in North-Western province has reached 4.5 million metric tones.

But the mining company’s Managing Director, Adam Wright says there are no plans to export the respective mineral ore.

Mr Wright instead says Lumwana’s immediate focus is copper production especially that the particular international prices area favourable compared to uranium prices.

And Mr Wright has disclosed that Lumwana mine will revise its 2011 production projections after the recent Equinox Minerals buy-out by Barrick Gold Corporation of Canada.

  1. With no Environment protection protocol yet created for Uranium where is the stock sitting?
Example – How far from civilians is the stock pile?
Who is monitoring the stock pile for theft of dangerous materials or illegal shipments?

Who is monitoring workers health facilities in a dangerous situation?

  2. Some MMD cadres are slinging mud at Iran for its failure to follow international rules on prolification of uranium but just look at their idols MMD allowing such dangerous conditions to prevail.

  3. This from the company fined for environment abuses and that was just copper waste.
Just think about the uranium waste now on mother Zambia’s soil.

  4. no plans by mmd.b4 u show your ignorance consult or visit the area.all the measures u mentioned are in place.Lumwana is safe and this just ore and levels of radiation are much much less than what u get from using ur cellphone.unless its get enriched thats when we can get high levels of radiation.

    • This is the most informed comment I have across both LT and ZWD – and I’m an avid reader of both. Uranium ore poses NO radiation risk. Enriched Uranium does. Zambia has no capacity to enrich Uranium. No wonder govt pushed for the degree clause. Too many numbskull wannabe presidents out there!

  5. Miner.

Zambia’s largest copper miner, Konkola Copper Mines, blamed the ultimate wickedness of Kafue River to a intensity outage progressing this week which led to the disaster of the pumps at its tailings ordering site on the Copperbelt province, the fraternisation said Saturday.
The fraternisation said that, rught away after the intensity outage, KCM sealed down its concentrator and the Tailings Leach Plant as a precautionary measure. The make a difference was also reported to the Environmental Council of Zambia, the Mines Protection Department and internal H2O application firm.
Kafue River is a source of H2O for thousands of residents in Zambia’s Copperbelt province.

  6. In November, a Zambian justice fined KCM at least $4,449 for polluting the river, which environmental activists described as a “peck on the cheek,” observant the fraternisation is polluting the stream with “impunity.”

  7. the support of miner in a dangerous operation like uranium mining tells people its money over matter for MMD development.
Weak laws will become the norm as they are now.
The fines will stay small like they are now!

What worry does a company have when it can act with impunity and get away with murder.
As in the fish that died and all the other animals poisoned as they drank from the river.
Zambians bathed and drank from this river as there was nothing else for them to use.
Copper tailings are dangerous and Uranium tailings are much worse so the claim of radiation was not the issue to worry about.
The worry is cancers from the other chemicals from the tailings dam that flowed into the Kafue river and will continue without major action by Zambia’s EPA.

  8. With poor TAX policy on minerals this is the right time to make money, after elections zambians will definately take what belongs to them because change is inevitable.

  9. Can ECZ or what ever is called now visit this mine now to avoid exposure by the communities from suffering from odd diseases.

  10. What benefits are the Kaonde people of Solwezi and other getting from recent sale of LCM to a canadian Company. Zero. Worse the mining of uranium will worsen the situation as there is mechanism put place to mitigate the impact on environment. The Finance Minister as if to add salt to a wound stated the proceeds from Lumwana Mine sale will diverted to mines on the Copperbelt. How czo these are old operations now majority in prvate hands. People of N/Western have been ripped off. A rich province without meaning infrastructure, there is nothing one can boast off being from NorthWestern. Its like the way Nothern Rhodesia was treated during the Federation of Rhodesia & Nyasaland. All riches from our mines were taken to Salisbury, Johannesburg and London. We are back to the same situation.

  11. I think in its natural raw state its not reactive so its safe…but i can assure you that if this chap wanted he would be exported it back door and we will be again robbed of resources..where is the Minister of Mines they the ones who should be announcing this!!

  12. Ignorant Zambians…
The stockpile mountain you see to the left at Mindolo as you leave Kitwe going to Chingola is a Uranium ore stockpile which was mined in the mid 70’s to 80’s by ZCCM from the old Mindolo North pit. Has anyone of you died…???

Its amazing how people pass comment on things they have no clue about

  13. Engineer, tell the illiterates who want to pretent to be knowledgeable. Don’t talk as if you are experts forgeting that some of the bloggers here are learned coleagues who understand these things. Some of you want to show concern as if you are more intelligent than the experts working at these mines. I laugh when some of these chaps comment for example on some Gov’t policies…those are not made under a tree, they are subjected to the whole policy analysis cycle and some of the best brains arround..the technocrates sit for days…months analysing issues and you think you can deal with them on a blog?

  14. No 17 the point is do not make comments on issues you have very little knowledge about just because of your political aspirations…
Uranium stockpile are common in most mining countries. The huge dumps you see in Joburg from gold mining have uraninum content in them because of a high content of uranium in geology of gold in SA. The lower kariba area has a high uranium radiation due to the presence of uranium. The fact is the levels of uranium in these stockpiles is so low to cause any problems to humans. You are more likely to have radiation exposure from an X-ray at the hospital than from copper or gold stockpiles containing uranium. I agree with you No 16, people on this blog think polices are made under a tree while drinking chibuku.

  15. No1 and other ignorant Zambians
For your information, Zambia under the guidance of the The IAEA  the world’s nuclear inspectorate, has developed one of the leading Uranium Protection Protocol in a third world country which has even been given accolades by the EIA.
What you might not know is that the only long serving member of the IAEA and only African who is a member of the executive of the IAEA is a Zambian

So do not undermine your political aspirations and think that Zambia is a banana republic just because you do not like the current government. Give respect and credit were its due for other to respect you..

  16. @ 17
….so what do you suggest? By the way, these are the same people that prop-up the Gov’t even when it changes…I am not talking about political positions, I am talking about the learned people that work from behing the curtains, the experts. I don’t belive that you have to fire the whole civil service when your man assumes power…are we together? better still, come back home and contribute in your own small way.

  17. No 1 and other ignorant Zambians

So while you may not like the government of the day due to your political aspirations, do not undermine others… give respect and credit were its due. Zambia is not a banana republic. Its a leading nation in Africa which so many people respect which every Zambian should be proud of.

Dr. Kaluba Chitumbo is the Head of International Atomic Energy Agency’s Safeguards Operations Division for the Asia Pacific region, Kaluba holds the following qualifications:PhD in Physical Chemistry from University of Uppsala, Sweden.B.Sc in Chemistry and Mathematics from University of Zambia.
So while you may not like the government of the day due to your political aspirations, do not undermine others… give respect and credit were its due. Zambia is not a banana republic.

  19. Uranium needs a bit of spinning to be highly dangerous. The ore is dangerous but not too bad….slow dose poison if you like.

  20. All I shall say is this let no man, sell this gregarious element of evil to make weapons at any cost. Just mine that copper and the manganese ofsett hahahahaha. Happy Friday Zedians, may God bless you all.

  21. To be honest with you guys,i’ve no idea about this uranium thing. So i will keep my mouth shut and lean from you the leaned people.

  22. I can see blind bloggers jkudt talk about anyhting and make attempt to politicise it. The uranium Pile at Lumwana, Whose storage containment I had a ahnd in I designing is very safe and cannot harm anyone. They are more than welcome to request a mine visit and see for themselves. As to theft of sensitive materials.m, its just laughable, I urge you to downlaod the the banakeable feasibility study and EIA documnet from ECZ , read it and stop being petty. I’m a proud Zambian and very ptud of what we achieved at Lumwana.
