Jean Kapata(R) confident of retaining the Mandevu Seat

Counting of votes in the 2011 Presidential, Parliamentary and Local government elections started last night at Nakatindi hall in Lusaka.

Counting of votes is currently going on at Nakatindi hall for Lusaka central, Kanyama and Kabwata constituencies respectively.

ZANIS reports that ballot papers in the company of election monitors, agents and police were being transported to Nakatindi hall a totalling centre for Lusaka.

However, results are yet to be declared by the Returning Officer appointed by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ).

People are gathered at the hall anxiously waiting for the results to be declared.

Ten political parties are in the presidential race in this year’s tripartite elections among them, the MMD, PF, UPND, NAREP, FDD, HP, ZED ADD and NMP.

Meanwhile, suspected PF cadres beat up Mandevu constituency Returning Officer Morgan Kasale for allegedly transporting ballot boxes without the company of election monitors.

Mr Kasale who was driving a Mitsubishi Pajero registration number ABT 5692 arrived at Nakatindi hall at about 06:45 hours and upon arrival PF cadres questioned him why he was alone without the escort of election monitors and political party agents.

This prompted the PF cadres to manhandle and beat him up but quick action by the police saved him from further beatings.

He has however been taken to hospital for medical treatment.

Earlier, PF Mandevu aspiring candidate Jean Kapata in an interview with ZANIS condemned the unprofessional manner Mr Kasale conducted himself.

She also expressed confidence that she would retain Mandevu parliamentary seat.

Meanwhile, The Zambia Police have arrested ten (10) suspected people in Lusaka’s John Laing compound for violence and riotous behaviour.

Deputy Commissioner of Police Auxencia Mbewe said the riots were triggered after the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) was accused of taking long to take election material at John Laing basic school polling station.

Mr. Mbewe told journalists in an interview at Lusaka’s Nakatindi hall Tuesday evening that the police managed to apprehend the culprits after deploying more officers to the area.

ZANIS reports that he said the situation was bad as the arrested rioters pelted stones at the school’s roof top and the election officers.

Mr. Mbewe said the Zambia Police has not yet probed the matter but would quickly do so.

He said Police would ensure that perpetrators of violence are brought to book as soon as possible.

The Police Deputy Commissioner observed that Lusaka is the only ward that has so far recorded violent and riotous behaviour.

He described the situation in other parts of the country as calm unlike the scenario in some parts of Lusaka.

  1. if no results, we take to the streets by 3 pm. By the way, to laugh at ECZ on the streets. Viva Zambia, viva civility, abash political stealing and abash rigging. Viva justice and viva peace. No justice no peace and the hague awaits the old men for trial!

  2. Jean Kapata congrats…you have indeed returned your sit…..its sad that your close friends Majory(Ex-Mufulira MP) jumped to MMD and has lost and Ex-Launshya MP Jean Phiri quiet in the back ground in MMD will be on the losing side…… But Jean Phiri is awesome, good woman hpe she returns to PF…Majory can go to hell with MMD…too stabborn

  3. #Dangerous Phiri,
    Lets us make peaceful statements.
There is no need of being emtional, you know the many challenges that we have as a country in terms of comminication and staff like.
Of course there are things that can be avoided by ECZ, but I think that there are also challenges that are unavoideable that come their way.
It will be wrong to think that all must go 100% perfect.
It is important to look at how ECZ reacts to the challenges they face, and not to assume that ECZ cannot have challenges.

  4. An ECZ vehicle in Roan constituency was last night damaged by suspected PF carders when it was on its way to collect ballot boxes to totaling centers despite the PF winning the seat. The rear wind screen has completely.

  5. # 8 DONCHI KUBEBA (RSA) – Q FM will give U the results. Google “Zambian radio stations” Go to live street and choose Q FM. You will get the results.

  6. It is these stupid manoeuvres that make people suspect that there is something fish about the vote rigging. Surely one can understand that even thieves can take advantage of this situation. ECZ must be sensitive and involve all concerned parties in the handling of the entire voting processes and voter material handling. We all know that Lusaka is a flash point for anything and consequently the ECZ needs to lead and show the nation that it is competently in-charge of the elections and that is also capable of conducting free and fair elections.

  7. Peace cannot be bought so take care of the peace Zambia has always enjoyed. Leaders are chosen by God, no matter what happens. That is why when you have impossed leaders there is suffering than when the hand of God takes care of a nation’s leadership! Take care zambia!

  8. Hey guys,,
Can anyone back home in zambia send me results as they come. i am out of zambia in kenya and i need to be updated. Help Help

    • go to the zambian economist blog, they have very good update.Ba LT looks like interest is diminishing to follow up events for reasons known to themselves.

  9. The elections are clearly tightly contested. Its either Sata or Rupiar. Lusaka and the Coppereblt a expected have gone to the oppostion, So is western province as well as Luapula. The gaps in lusaka and the copperbelt however are substanively reduced as compared to the previous election. If Sata(PF ) has also reduced the gaps in southern as well as eastern proviinces, then this election belongs to the PF.However if the inrods are not as much, then it will be nail biting to point were he might end up lossing again. Iits 50;50 based on the patterm imagin for now.

  10. I can’t wait for Friday for the presidential results. Rbish is history. Everyone i’ve spoken to in Zed don’t want him.. And didn’t vote for him. GOOD RIDDANCE to him….
