Nkrumah College of Education (NCE) students in Kabwe Monday morning staged a peaceful demonstration demanding among other things that their institution be transformed into fully fledged University.

The students who marched along Luapula streets and kept singing the national anthem and reciting the Lord’s prayer in unison, met a barricade of police officers in riot gear at the junction of Luapula and Munkoyo street about 500m from the college.

The Police pushed the students back up to the college gate where Central Province Permanent Secretary Deny Lumbama later addressed them.

Nkrumah student’s union (NKRUSU) president, Martin Chishimba says students feel government is delaying to transform the college into a fully fledged university and thereby denying them facilities of University.

Chishimba says the students are concerned by the delay especially that from 2009 when the institution was declared a university, it is still operating under college conditions and yet it has qualified lecturers to teach University level.

He says the students are also demanding that their institution be completely delinked from the University of Zambia so that it can be moderating examinations independently.

He also says students are demanding to be considered for bursaries like their colleagues at UNZA and Copperbelt University.

Another complaint they have is that the school demands full payment of K1, 800, 000 from them as school fees and yet they will not be in school for a full term.

And addressing the students Central Province Permanent Secretary, Deny Lumbama who was flanked by his deputy Luke Mankapi, says his office will channel the demands to the ministry of education for parliamentary approval.

He appealed to the students to get back to their studies while government looks into the matter.

Mr Lumbama promised students that his office will deal with the issue of payment as it is a local matter.

  1. Just learn the diploma way. After all diplomas are also qualifications. By the way most of you guys there at Nkrumah are not degree material. You are just wasting your time in trying to arm-twist the government. I end here!

    • Your comments reflect a shallow, misguided and myopic view of issues. Your thinking is beneath acceptable social and academic ettiquette and deserves the strongest condemnation and contempt. no wonder you have failed even to disclose your identity. you seem to lack civility and common sense in your reaction to that issue. as though you were never at any point taught by a Nkrumah graduate. Your thinking is dogmatic and inconsistent with modern trends and dynamism.

    • PEACE MAKER, PLEASE LEARN TO THINK BIG! OR ELSE YOU WILL DIE A DESTITUTE. WHAT IS A DIPLOMA IN THE MODERN ACADEMIC SYSTEM. BY THE WAY, YOU SOUND OF A VERY LOW WIT. IT IS SO FAR VERY EVIDENT THAT YOU ARE NOT EVEN DIPLOMA MATERIAL, BECAUSE YOUR “DIPLOMA” LACKS CONFIDENCE. DON’T WASH DIRTY LINEN IN PUBLIC. I FEEL PITY FOR YOUR WIFE AND CHILDREN.

  2. sorry guys your president is too busy chasing gold that went to switzerland. now even after you become a university, your degrees will be no good, your president has no Jobs to offer as his mandate first is constitution and commissions of inquiry, meaning sitting around and wasting time. your best option is to quit school, join PF and become a Bus conductor or driver or a call boy. then one day an mp!!!

    • You must be talking about MMD I think… I know the kind of chaps you’ve described personally… And you have described them so eloquently…

  3. Cont….
What is K1.8m for fees to start with. These guys are just jokers – K1.8m is nothing to cry about. Just pay and get the hell out of there. The students seem not to have brains at all. No wonder they are not degree or university material. I end here!

  4. How can these guys be demanding University status when UNZA is # 69 in Africa. What they should demand are teachers and resources. There is a risk of the sick education is Zambia to become politicized and not aimed at giving graduates life skills.

  5. #1 Peace Maker. I would like to disagree with your comment which I find unfortunate from a “degree holder” like you. For your own information I was once a diploma student at that institution and have now added degree in Business admin. and now studying for a masters. I have a countless number of colleagues who have branched into accountancy and even engineering! Some I know personally, others I have only come to meet and discovered we ent to the same college. However, the place does need and uplift in many ways more than what the students were demanding. Besides, it only does the noble vocation of teaching a great service, and ultimately the Zambian education system if our teachers graduated with a degree. Be reasonable in your comments.

  6. Imwe Cosmas na Peacemaker..People dont need degrees to function. When you get the diploma its what you do with it that matters not the fact that you have qualified with a degree/diploma. Zambia doesnt need too many degree holders. We need artisans for the nation to stand on its feet.

    • Mudala, if it doesnt matter then why are’nt they all just called degrees? Probably because they differ in degree. Doh!!! “What do you have?” “A diploma in education.” “And you?” “A degree in education. Don’t those two just sound different? What is wrong with raising the standards forour teachers? The better educated they are the better they teach, These are students who want to do better. What’s wrong with that, if we can afford it?

    • Equaliser efyo ndandile kutila we should not be engrossed with having universities or attaining degrees. We will end up with a nation full of academically qualified people who cant find jobs; as a result cant function anywhere within our economic system. Things should be prioritised. What the nation needs as at now are not degree holders but craftsmen

  7. University with village kitchen.PF government should fire the principle of that university(college?) without delay

  8. Where will the money come from? Already PF govt has announced a good number of institutions that they want to turn into universities.

  9. Your institution is a university do u want it to like Washington Uni or Cambridge. Ifyakukopela muma filimu tefyo. some of u will be posted in  the bush or sorry rural areas do u want to miss uni coz u will be staying in koloboyi houses. that filth uni is a preparation for where u gona be posted.

Give them degrees so that they can boost to pupils that they had second division but they still have degrees. 10 – 17 points for UNZA students in education.

  10. No first upgrade the infrastructure. That structure is not University Material please don’t Embarrass us, that looks like a Basic in Rural Areas.

  11. Universities are accredited. You dont just demonstrate to force a college into a university. There are demands that have to be met. Like having competent and educated lecturers. Laboratory equipment and chemicals for experiments. Proper accommodation full equipped with bathrooms in each room for privacy and food. Libraray with computers. It is not like secondar school with a common ablution block and a small library.. Stop demonstrations now. I can evaluate Nkrumah College for free.

  12. You students are embarassing. You mean you have found a short cut to entering university!! Mulugushi is just next door there go there. Making all colleges into universities will not solve any problem. We need more colleges of NORTEC stand. You think if all of us became university graduates then there will be no unemployment? In fact 90% of you won’t even manage to graduate! Watch out you may be digging your own grave.

  13. What is wrong with a diploma? What you need is quality of teaching not a piece of paper of poor quality like the UNZA degree. Some of the UNZA graduates cannot even spell. Some have handwriting like four year olds!! Khrumah students , ask for quality not papers….

    • walasa apopene apo! most of the UNZA graduates cant even perfom, they are only gud braging with paper. nkrumah produces more quality, thats why we are more interrested in quality than of production than quality of paper with poor production. zambia needs quality of production agently. let the fools who dont understand the demand keep barking.

  14. # 3 your thinking capacity is below par. K1.8m is something if you have no job. Some people who have jobs don’t even make that much.Being a university is out of the question, obviously. What they should ask for is improved infrasture and calibre of instructors to befit a college of it’s standing.Everyone accepted to college should have an opportunity to get a bursary which should actually be a student loan that should be paid back. There are so many orphans in Zambia today and many people are struggling just to get by.I like the American way.You can go to a community college and get a govt loan. Why can’t our system meet student’s tuition even half way?

    • Even the one you call “complete”is not even complete. Unza nids lots of attention b4 the govnt can scatter the little they hv to upgrade Nkrhumah “University.” Patience pays or you’re not heading anywhere Nkrhumah students.

  15. Bane ukuitemwa, that is not a bad move, but we need first to give,Western,North Western,Luapula,Northern,Southern,Muchinga provinces a University each first.Lusaka,Central,Copperbelt will be lodging first(ROOMS).Our president new names Sata Kabomba.Every Grad mother’s aim is to see that the children in the family get more educated than them. Most of our educted parents thier mothers and fathers never got in class.95% of we the educated one’s are the most jealous in Zambia. We are alos good at Witch graft, black magic than thsi who have never been to school.E.g DrKatele Kalumba Cheyenge.com.Net work now head man.All the same he is under mum Inoge Wina PF Chairperson and minister for cheifs affiars the all Zambia. All farm inputs will be through her to the chiefs, head then villegers

  16. These guys should be objective. Their entry papers they presented not befitting college and not university. If you wanted university u wud have applied to UNZA or CBU…In this case u all need to be deregistered and go back to do ur O-levels well. Otherwise turning Nkrumah college into university was a misplaced idea.

    • BAMWINE ! DONT ACT PROPHET PLEASE ……NEXT TIME DON’T REVEAL YOUR INEFFICIENCY IN PUBLIC. WHAT YOU SAW AS A KITCHEN IS A RECENT EMERGENCY FACILITY TO SUPPLEMENT THE ELECTRIC KITCHEN IN CASE OF POWER CUT. PLEASE GET YOUR SELF A PLACE IN ANY CHEAP COLLEGE CLOSE TO YOUR HOME TO ASSIST YOU IMPROVE YOUR ANALYTICAL SKILLS.

  17. # 20 we don’t even have a proper university par Z .The GRZ must renovate & upgrade Unza,CBU,Mulungushi. They are not fit to be called universities especially CBU & mulungushi.

  18. it is painfull when the president anounces that koseko should be a university and a big campus like nkrumah be left at the same levo crying student frm nkrumah

  19. #20 and # 27, I totally agree with you. Even UNZA is not a complete university. It is miles behind even the former South African Bantustan universities.

  20. This is a just call. Its time Govt raised the standards of this institution and upgraded it to a full University. This will foster competitiveness and help to improve standards of education in the country.

  21. #23 UNZA and CBU have only so many places for a country with many school leavers like ours. There are many great students who do not make it to the 2 Universities. Therefore increasing the number of Universities in the country is the way to go!

  22. ITS A PITY THAT WE STILL HAVE ELDERS WHO CANT ANALISE SIMPLE ISSUES LIKE THE TRANSFORMATION OF NKRUMAH COLLEGE OF EDUCATION. IT MAKES ME A HAPPY BLOGGER TO GUESS THAT NON OF THE PEOPLE WHO HAVE OPPOSED TO THIS NOBLE CAUSE AS DELIVERED BY THE STUDENTS ; IS IN ANY MANAGEMENT POSITION OF ANY KIND

  23. IT TAKES MORALS TO BUILD A NATION AND NOT JUST BRAINS. SURELY IN YOUR MORALLY UPRIGHT MIND, HOW DO YOU SCOLD YOUNG PEOPLE WHO HAVE MANAGED TO VOICE OUT FOR THE GOOD OF THE COUNTRY AND YOUR OWN CHILDREN? IT MAKES ME A VERY SAD ZAMBIAN TO KNOW THAT I AM SURROUNDED BY BLOCKED MINDS LIKE SUCH HATERS OF THIS NOBLE CAUSE. IF YOU ARE INDEED A SCHOLAR, THEN YOU MUST KNOW THAT EDUCATION IS THE BUILDING BLOCK OF EVERY WEALTHY COUNTRY. IT IS THE QUALITY OF THE TEACHER THAT DETERMINES THE QUALITY OF THE NATION. TODAY YOU HAVE EXPRESSED YOUR EDUCATIONAL SICKNESSES IN PUBLIC NOT BECAUSE IT PLEASES YOU NOR DO YOU DO IT FOR FAME, BUT ITS BECAUSE YOU WERE BADLY SCHOOLED. IF YOU GUYS KEEP ON IN YOUR CURRENT MIND SET I FORE SEE A FARM OF THUGS BREEDING FROM YOUR HOMES

  24. Peace maker, i bet i should say “peace maker”, i’m a physicist at nkrumah and our syllabus is advanced than any you may think of in zambia. Where is the “not a university material” coming from? Come and carry out statistics of both our results and iqs so you infer and revisit your judgement. Why should i even oppose you, it’ll seem as though i’m of a contemporary feather. So to run away from people synchronizing me to you, i just want you to know that foolishness is vital on a special ground: it helps us know the other side, wit. And hey, if you are rich that k1.8m is nothing, then its best you step into sponsoring some of us.

  25. you all do not understand what you are talking about. if the instittition is delinked from university of Zambia that will add to the develpment of our nation in terms of tertially education.

  26. am so greatly disappointed with some of you who call yourself university material frm cbu and unza.First of all,are you aware that at Nkrumah students are with good/genuine results compared to some of u.its seems you dont understand what challenges a university college student can endure campared frm unza due to your canal mind.stop unanalytic comments.

  27. viva nkuruma…finally with all said and done by critics and mindless cbu nd unza students and not forgeting the fake prophets,i would like 2 conclude by sayn nkurumah is now a fully fledged university.viva nkurumah
