State to probe Task Force-seized assets, earnings

GOVERNMENT says it will track all assets that were collected by the defunct Task Force on Corruption and ensure that all the earnings from the sale of goods that were auctioned are accounted for.

Minister of Home affairs Kennedy Sakeni said in an interview at State House yesterday Government also wants to verify that assets that are claimed to have been given back to their owners were indeed returned.

“We want to make sure that no one benefitted from assets that were confiscated by the Task Force. All goods that were grabbed must be accounted for.

“Government wants to find out whether some of the goods that were confiscated have been given back to the rightful owners in the case of those that were cleared of all allegations of taking part in the plunder of national resources,” Mr Sakeni said.

And Mr Sakeni has said Government has no intentions of re-establishing the Task Force on Corruption, which was disbanded by former President Rupiah Banda’s administration.

He said the fact that security wings are using the building that used to house the Task Force for investigating some alleged cases of corruption does not mean the disbanded institution is coming back.

He said the Anti-Corruption Commission, Drug Enforcement Commission and Zambia Police Service are capable of handling cases of a criminal nature.

  1. RB was right afterall for disbanding the TF which was gobbling more than it was recovering. Those who were bitter is cos it was their money making machine.

  2. Sakeni you are a very dull person. Has anyone complained to you that his or her corruptly acquired property was not returned? Is there any cause for your witch hunt? Please just concentrate on issues that will improve the lives of Zambians. Stop the witch hunt you empty tins. It st.u.pi.d for any govt to spend 99% of its time on searching for alleged crimes commited by a previous govt. What is the motivation for this lunacy? Why dont you use 99% of your time looking for ways to solve Zambia’s poverty? Zambia has gone to the dogs!

  3. Good move. People should not be executing duties for the nation whilst they themselves benefit from supposedly plundered goods. ——– Don’t see anything wrong with the govt. decision to ensure that  property is returned to rightful owners or in tha case of property – acquired from plundered country’s wealth – that these are auctioned with the returns to benefit of the nation. . . .Even Jesus asked Zaccheus the tax collector to return what he had taken / stolen from others whilst carrying out his duties.

  4. My only concern is that the appeal cases that were prosecuted by the task force are taking long to conclude both pa high and supreme courts. I know the judiciary operates independently, but can some ask them to expedite these cases so that those who will be freed can start leading a normal life? We have seen a situation where in the past certain individuals have failed to aspire for political office because of the same cases. the courts should also conclude all parliamentary elections within the stipulated time. it should be 180 days

  5. i mean all paliamentary elections petitions within the stipulated time so that all our MPs can start performing their duties without uncertainty hanging around their necks.

  6. @#2 Musiwa Likota,

You people never cease to amaze me. when a minister comment on any issue it does not mean he is not working. This is just one of the small assignments out of the thousands which his ministry is working on. Do you know that the amounts evolved here are huge and can build a clinic or even a hospital if properly accounted for? Yes let them account for every penny. umulandu taubola, that is what bembas say.As for those who have not recvd their properties, it is a wise decision to give them back now. becoz if there is any delay, they will take the gvt to court and the gvt will again start spending tax payers money on lawyers and penalties. This is want we campaigned against. Think before posting your comments please

  7. Time should not be wasted in disposing off those assets. The earlier they are disposed off the better.Mind you, depreciation value has to be accounted for in all the assets. If the government proclastinate in disposing them off, they will attract less value. We want the minister to produce an inventory record of all the assets and publicise them in government tabloids. The minister should further issue mode of auction them. Those are peoples’assets and transparency should be seen working in ways of dispositing them.Let the people of Zambia benefit from those assets.

  8. 100 million dollars swindled from ZCCM and invested in the banking system in Mauritius

former finance minister Musokotwane ALSO FORMER DIRECTOR OF ZCCM knew that and where the money is…
if mauritian banks refuse to return money why Musokotwane and now pf govt do not publicly make pression on mauritians ??

    100 MILLION DOLLARS !!!!!

Today where is the money??? WHO lined the pockets ???

  9. nothing was done since 2008 !!

    from APANEWS

100 million dollars swindled from former ZCCM

Zambia and Mauritius, within the framework of the Mutual Assistance Programme are working to retrieve 100 million dollars alleged swindled from the Zambia Consolidated Copper Mines (ZCCM), APA learnt here.

The Zambian government holds 85 percent of shares in the ZCCM.

A high level delegation of the Zambian Task Force on Corruption, Tuesday arrived in Mauritius to pursue the matter.
Rama Valayden, the Attorney General and Minister of Justice to reporters Wednesday in the capital, Port Louis, that he will hold a working session in the evening with the Zambian delegation to discuss the follow up of the case which implicates offshore companies incorporated in Mauritius.

  10. continued

He said about 100 million dollars have been transferred through the Bank of Butterfield Account in London, before being invested in the banking system in Mauritius and said the suspects in the scam are known by Zambian and Mauritian authorities.
At the beginning of the year, at the request of the Zambian government, the Mauritius Supreme Court issued an ’Attachment and Freezing Order’ to several banks here on the accounts of the suspects, Mr Bernard Mungulude, Mr Kazhi Kateke and the Laxi diamond company.
The duty of the Zambian Task Force on Corruption now was to seek to identify the local agents and representatives of the suspects so as to be able to recover and repatriate the money.

Hence, local banks have been assigned to submit documentary evidence to expose the criminal gang, or else the banks will face dire consequences, Valayden said.

WHO benefits from this dirty trick ????

  12. the govt MUST re-establis the Task Force on Corruption and its former chairman Maxwell Nkole to hunt plunderers and crooks such as james banda, regina, corrupt civil servants…

Mr sakeni, enough hot air, we want act otherwise be careful of disillusionment

  13. The principle of such investigations or under taking by Task Force is to prevent future corruption by showing that corruption will is punishable by law in a nation. Those who think of how much will be recovered out of such efforts are mistaken, but we should see the benfit on a long term basis. This will help the children to grow in grand corruption (worked out at the highest level as was with Chiluba and Banada govts) free society, hence true development will be part of their lives. therefore, we should not over spend our resources on this but put more emphasis on preventing corruption and caging these who are found waiting.

  14. Mr sakeni, remember and move your as…s !! the end of “within 90 days” is going to come !

Jimbo cannot be ignored now. In terms of life style, Jimbo lives what many simply dream of. It is a first class red carpet life. The only difference is it is being subsidized by ill gotten public wealth.

Recently he caused a sensation when he made an outright cash purchase of a Mercedes Benz S600 (worth $250,000.00), a BMW X6 ($120,000.00) for his girlfriend and innumerable lush gifts of expensive cars and houses for his many wives.

Jimbo is in now playing in the same league with sons of African dictators notorious for luxurious lifestyles, extravagant expenditures that represented the rot and extent of corruption their fathers had been involved in.

  15. Beside the revealed details Mike Te above has made are type of cases the minister of Home Affairs needs to announce to the nation of its findings and others of Kapoko who is parambulating Lusaka streets freely posing as a successful man. These people let Zambians die due to lack of medicines in hospitals while they milked the govt. dry. Mr Sekeni MOH is a job you need to bring about tangible outcomes not politics. This applies to everyone including Sata with his zeal sometimes misplaced with vengence instead of being a national leader, he selectively targets individuals. Zambians are not that poor in judgement. They await results from the much rhetoric made to date.

  16. Kapoko (Cobra’s nephew) has to be absolved from his billions of theft from ministry of health as he used part of the money to prop up PF in the 2008 elections. Its called selective prosecution……

  17. The minister is right and that’s one of GOVT’s work. Be calm and ask after investiagtions. These statements are answers from the press.

  18. SOME OF YOU ARE ABROAD WHERE YOU DID YOUR EDUCATION AND NOW WORKING BECAUSE YOU BENEFITED FROM THE SAME. SURE CALM DOWN, LET THE GOVT DO ITS WORK. WE ARE SUFFERING BACK HERE HOME BECAUSE OF YOU PEOPLE.

  19. on ftj probe, mr chona, nchito bros and the lot at task force apparently spent US$10m to go after what ended up amounting to US$500,000!!!!!!!!!!!!! the properties where handed to some bogus estate agents and the monies were not being paid to GOVT OR BOZ or anticorruption for at least 8 years. Zambian Airways, The Post etc all got recapitalised conincidentally in that time too…..do the maths!!!! starting to like PF!

  20. @Mike Te, you sound frustrated that despite working hard others are prospering and you nothing. It apears nowadays in zambia no one deserves to be rich. Why should you call your friend corrupt jst becoz his dad was president.Look guys lets not be prfessionals at labelling people with corruption and thugery.grow up Mike Te.Why shouldnt Jimbo buy cars if he can afford, work hard and buy yours.Stop that nonense, if you cant handle millions then go for counselling to improve your confidence on money handling

  21. No. 21 you are wise and do you know that the three you have mentioned think that Zambians don’t know that. It was US$20000 per month. What can stop anyone from creating cases against anyone so that they get that amount. Per month that amount could have paid the entire ACC. And who doesn’t know that Nchito writes all the editorials in the Post when it comes to the fight against corruption. He wants to sway our President on to that path again. Mr. President please equip the law enforcement agencies so that they fight corruption PROFESSIONALLY without a $20 000 salary attached to them. If possible SIr prevent corruption so that no cases get to court.

  22. @29, thats the problem…this story behind the story has not gained enough traction which is an opportunity that was lost by the last gvt to expose the task force as the real pompwes! I suspect MCS is on a plan to expose them mumano so that they are finally done for even thinking they can run him the way they did LPM, ka post especially, for once if my suspicion is correct Im with MCS on this one

  23. #28 @ Munyono
open your eyes, you seem to be a naive guy
read the article “President Banda’s thieving son and corrupt drun…kards who run Zambia’ State House” and you will understand
“Why should you call your friend corrupt jst becoz his dad was president.” Because his dad is one of worse crooks, thats all!
    And remember
    — from The Post–
George Mpombo has disclosed that he resigned as defence minister because he could not agree with President Rupiah Banda’s decision to award an arms supply contract to his son James’ South African business allies.
Mpombo revealed that had the deal gone through, James Banda would have received 10 per cent from the total transaction as a kick-back.

indeed getting 10 percent ($10m), its a hard work… LOL

  24. Wonderful web site. Lots of helpful info here. I am sending it to some friends ans also sharing in delicious. And of course, thanks on your effort!
