Zesco explains current load-shedding

Share

The increase in load-shedding in the past two days has been caused by a reduction in generation capacity at of ZESCO’s major power stations.

ZESCO corporate affairs and business development director Bestty Phiri says most parts of the country have experienced an increase in load shedding.

This is because of reduced generation capacity at Kafue Gorge and Victoria Falls.

Mr. Phiri says generation capacity has been reduced due to low water levels in the Zambezi River.

He said in a statement to ZNBC that the power station which has an installed generation capacity of 108 Mega Watts is currently generating only 70 MEGA Watts.

ZESCO has made arrangements to cushion the impact of load-shedding, by importing power from some neighboring countries.

  1. This loadshedding thing has now become a national scandal. It is counter-productive and a total disgrace. The so called engineers at ZESCO have failed the nation, instead of resolving the issue they find pleasure in making peoples lives a misery and giving all sorts of foolish excuses. How long has this been going on? Zambia is being made to look like Somalia.

  2. Doesn’t this same ZESCO export electricity? maybe you should make sure your own people have got enough before exporting. And now obviously due to some legal constraints you cant stop the exports but have to import instead…

    • Very true @ fyototo. Why export in the first place if you can’t even manage to sustain your own people. Ba Zesco twalitendwa namufilyafye.

  3. I hope they wont be appointing a “commission of inquiry” on this one too and hope to give us the results(and not the solutions) after 5 years of office.

  4. ZESCOs’ performance had better improve or we will start thinking that the previously fired management team was better than you lot in their today! We are fed up of running our homes and businesses on genset and the operational costs are mounting fast! Stop sending the apologising messages and concentrate on giving us stable and consistent power supply.

  5. Gentlemen the way forward for Zambia is nuclear energy, we have the uranium we have the land, we have the capacity and we are capable of putting up a nuclear power plant. Energy in countries that use nuclear energy is very much cheaper than in those that use hydro-electric energy. With nuclear energy each home wouldn’t be paying more than a dollar for a month. What do you say Zambia? Let’s not perish for luck of knowledge. Let’s not be dull in thinking. Let’s be civilized globalized people. We aren’t living in the slave trade era!!! we are a different people. Just believe in your self. I bet someone has already stolen my idea of nuclear energy. And it’s not about stealing ideas. It’s about exchanging ideas for development purposes. Happy Zambia day!!!!

  6. #7 you idea of nuclear power is not carefully studied. Zambia has the potential to produce environmental friendly hydro power to export to the rest of eastern and southern Africa for years. The only problem is that they have been not investment in production since 1950s 1960s when these plants were built. Nuclear power is last resort, when u do not have the rivers etc. Nuclear energy comes with it consequences and with carelessness that African government has to control environmental pollution it will be destruct in this country. O know nuclear energy, sky scrappers sounds sexy to most Africans but when and why did the west started building tall building? It is because the ran out of land. Have we run out of these materials?

  7. no.7 Its not a bad idear to go nuclear but only after we exploit all the hydro potential which is easier to deal with. Remember fukushima? I am not sure about how cheap though. You can shed more light.

  8. This is total nonsense. Do these fools think that they are speaking to children? How does this Phiri say the cause of load shedding is due to low water in Zambezi, did this situation occur suddenly? If so where did the water that was there three weeks ago before this load shedding came go?

This Chitundu is just incompetent. The only method he know is to load shed and not to increase capacity of supply. They will be more of this and also country wide blackouts. Just wait and see. We are in trouble friends.

  9. Company yaba kolwe….fulu fulu ubukaya pa kwi ngisha inchito…..almost all engineers are related…you can’t perform..some of them their on merit

  10. we were supposed to have the competitor for these *****s to improve their services. i hate the way the treat this country.

  11. Is the state house affected by the load-shedding?
The other thing is, when power is turned on/off suddenly it may cause damage to most domestic appliances like fridges and TVs and I wonder who should bear the costs of repairs. Here in the UK service providers get sued for poor services and carelessness but in my country they get away with anything while tariffs and other charges keep on rising. Shame!

  12. Zesco is useless. They find joy in the expression “load shedding” as if it means any good. It is rather lack of professionalism and creativity. Be efficient, plan ahead….

  13. Ba Kolwe you think electricity will generate itself without proper investment in the energy sector for 20 years? And if Mushota speaks about Scotland muletukana. You would rather buy MPs ama pajero than build an electric generating plant to supplement energy needs. Those are self inflicting buchushi; atase.

  14. Load sheddinng means a   ccountry has no planners. Didn’t economists foreseee  our lack of energy vis a vis our demands? And didn’t the govt sit doown to  plan? How can  a country with 3 hydro poower stations fail to have enough power? ZESCO engineers should be fired.

  15. Chitundu should never have been appointed MD of Zesco, but due to influential people he knows in govt he got the job. He was just a junior in Zesco before RB govt appointed him Chief Operating Officer in Zesco. Suddenly he became Acting MD and was dismissde by the board for incompetence. As soon as he was appointed MD second time he decided to dismiss all senior managers with long experience and promoted his cronies and tribesmen. Do not expect electric loadshedding to disappear any time soon. He hasn’t got the experience and knowledge to run a large corporation like Zesco.

  16. There is no need to insult one another, please let’s be diplomatic. Don’t blame any one for anything. Doom is always inevitable according to the law of thermodynamics, you can’t stop change into the negative direction, you can only delay it.
So like I suggested, so am I still suggesting one of the laws of physics to be applied to Zambian energy system. If any one has a problem with it contact me @ right here., we can have a good long talk. If you need any advice in terms of running the world’s resources, just get in touch with me.
Gentlemen the way forward for Zambia is nuclear energy, we have the uranium we have the land, we have the capacity and we are capable of putting up a nuclear power plant. Energy in countries that use nuclear energy is very much cheaper.

  17. Heya, just looking around various weblogs, feels a reasonably pleasant program you are using. So i’m previously utilising WordPress for a few associated with the online websites however hoping to switch one too onto a fabulous stage like the one you have as being a trial jog. Something particularly you should advocate about this?

  18. I relish, result in I found just what I used to be looking for. You’ve ended my 4 day long hunt! God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye
