THE Zambia Police Service yesterday said former Zambian high commissioner to Canada Nevers Mumba should prepare answers to allegations of impropriety about his work at the embassy in Toronto and avoid making accusations that he was being victimised to undermine his presidential ambitions.

This was after Dr Mumba told a crowd of supporters outside the Force headquarters in Lusaka that he was being victimised for the purpose of grounding his political career and the former ruling party, but vowed that he would remain strong and revamp the party ahead of the next presidential and general elections in 2016.?[pullquote]Nevers Mumba said his appearance at the police marked the end of politics of hate and victimisation which he said was not good for a democratic country[/pullquote]

Police Service spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela told journalists at her office in Lusaka yesterday shortly after Dr Mumba appeared before a team of investigators that the former high commissioner should not complain of victimisation but allow the law to take its course.

She said police did not have anything personal against the former Zambian envoy to Canada, who briefly appeared before a team investigating allegations of financial impropriety while he served as head of mission in Toronto.

President Michael Sata recently disclosed that Dr Mumba would be investigated over allegations of irregular transactions while in Canada but the former vice-president has denied the allegations.

Dr Mumba said he was being victimised to divert MMD’s attention from reorganising itself and concentrate on dealing with the court case.

The former vice-president said his appearance at the police marked the end of politics of hate and victimisation which he said was not good for a democratic country.

Dr Mumba arrived at the Force headquarters accompanied by lawyers Sakwiba Sikota of Central Chambers and Sunday Nkonde of SNB Legal Practitioners.

Mr Sikota told journalists that police were not ready for Dr Mumba and asked them to return for questioning on Tuesday next week.

Mr Sikota condemned police for summoning his client before they could gather evidence to charge him.

“The police have told us that they have nothing against Dr Mumba so we are wondering why they called him here.

They are on a fishing expedition but we will give them time and come back on Tuesday,” Mr Sikota said.

He said the Government had made a lot of pronouncements which had painted Dr Mumba in bad light and wondered why they had no evidence at this stage.

But Ms Kanjela said the allegations by Dr Mumba that he was being politically victimised were inaccurate.

She said the police had the right to summon any citizen even without a reason because such was part of investigations.

Ms Kanjela said police had secured an appointment with Dr Mumba for Tuesday next week and that their action to invite him even before they were ready was necessary during investigations.

“We asked him to come to the police and we have gotten an appointment for next week on Tuesday. There is nothing wrong with that. We are not accusing him of anything because we work with the people so we must meet them,” Ms Kanjela said.

  1. Accusations without evidence. Cheap talk from Sata. Satas downfall will be his own mouth. Just feed him wrong information to make him look stupid and foolish.

  2. Zambian mission in Toronto. That just shows that these PF dominated police force spokespersons and the PF GTV has no evidence. Shame on them for not knowing where the Zambian shop in Canada is.

  3. Sata’s downfall has just been effected by his own actions. one can never rule a nation by persecuting others. Its a sign of lack of a vision for this nation.

  4. The question is how did SATA get the election?
    Is it not through lies???
    SATA prmissed the following:
    1) Deliver constitution in 90 days, did he tell the truth or he lied?
    2) Deliver development in 90 days, did he tell the truth or lie?
    3) Re-introduce windfall tax, did he tell the truth or lie?

  5. Interestingly, SATA refused to be part of Mwanawasa’s NCC, yet it passed thru parliament and was an act of parliament.
Mwanawasa made the NCC bill to go thru parliament and and invited all major institution, Churches and NGOs to nominate and send members to be part of the NCC.
SATA refused to be part of it saying it was government engeneered and that it was not all inclussive.
But what has SATA done? Single-handedly he has picked 20 people to do the constitution and you can still much his words with his actions.
You have to be like SATA to believe that there is no lie in what he says.
Any liar will not see anything wrong in lying – that is just the way it is? If you eat ka monkey you will not see anything wrong when you find someone eating a ka monkey!!!
    That is how it is!!!

  6. Wait and see what will happen if the rate at which PF is moving is not checked.
Some people have the capacity, through an analytical eye, to see things before they actually happen while other people can only see what has happened. For such we give time.
It was on this same sight I told people that the promisses of 90 day this, 90 day that were lies, and SATA would, as usual, change and u-turn on each promiss.
People were adamant and too royal to SATA’s promisses that they would not believe he was lying.
Today, they can only say it’s Ok even if he lies because we like him.
I know that there is no problem in liking a liar, especially when you too are a liar. You can love the person, no problem. I hope you wont love even his lies!!!

  7. This Elizabeth Kanjela should not be a spokesperson….surely they couldn’t find somebody better. Disappointing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  8. The title is misleading better COPS MEET DR MUMBA FOR A CHAT. Too many beatiful police women nowadys, yab kuti wasumina nemilandu taupangile ka.

  9. “Police can summon any citizen even without any reason”. she has declared to Zambians. ONLY IN A POLICE STATE that infringement of citizenry rights are trampled upon. PF govt will deny this if put to their face. A police officer boldly stating govt is above the law. We Zambians will ensure some one will come to pay for these our hard earned rights now squizzed to our faces. Especially law enforcement officers sould take note to be held personally accountable, your boss will not be there to defend you.

  10. Very pathetic unprofessional pathological liars without an aorta of truth, substance, strategy or integrity.Leadership and institutional failure from the head to the follower of orders.Where will this relic take you or your career with his daily vacuous talk. Can unemployment, poverty, under-development, and lack of opportunities for the citizenry be addressed through rants?

Poor cop what will become of you in the face of people’s critical mass resolve against insanity?

  11. What a shame. Couldnt they have called him to make an appointment. Its so sad that a man I thought was very principled like Dr Malama has sunk this low. Its true that people will do anything for money and position. Why call someone to appear for investigations if you dont even have questions for him.

Shame on your Dr Malama. And you call yourself a christian!!! You should fear God and not man. One day, Satana wont be president. Where will you be?

  12. #4 That’s the problem with the practice of appointing party cadres to head these institutions whenever there’s a change of government. They must please their masters, otherwise they lose their positions. Its pathetic! I feel for these guys. Its very difficult to be professional.

  13. “She said the police had the right to summon any citizen even without a reason because such was part of investigations.”

Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to GESTAPO. This is the man we voted into office. Malama has become his lap dog!

  14. This is pure harrassment. How can police summon someone without any reason? What kind of country is Zambia. This police woman is shocking. PF government!

  15. So the police can summons anyone, at any time, without needing any reason at all?

    Really?

In that case, I think the constitution review people better add a few lines about protection of privacy and safeguards from interference with daily life. If the police have “no reason” to summons you, they need to leave you alone!

    ….unless maybe this is a witch-hunt?

  16. ‘She said the police had the right to summon any citizen even without a reason because such was part of investigations’………….did the police spokesperson really say that?

The police have a ‘right’ to cal lanyone without reason. really?

  17. You Police Service spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela, Are you sure you know what you are talking about or YOU ARE JUST PARROTING what your master Sata has told you to say to just your harassment of Nevers Mumba?

Honestly Zambians don’t have trust in you men and women of uniform because you only serve the interests of POLITICIANS by victimizing opposition political leaders as FORMER Police Inspector General Kabonde did with the MMD!

Can you let us Zambians know what is happening with the GOLD scandal investigations?

We the Zambians people wants a professional Police Service protected in the NEW constitutional of Zambia where you the Zambia Police Service will feel safe to work PROFESSIONALLY without being intimidated by Sata and PF!

That is why We Zambians voted Sata and PF!

  18. Kanjela said ”the Police did not have anything person against Nevers Mumba”, but she has fallen short of saying ”they are just following orders”.I think this very bad for our country and our democracy.Sata has no vision for this country but he is just there to get revenge and make a name for himself that he also was President of this country.Let this save as lesson for us that we should not experiment Leadership again in future once we are through with the Sata era. This is going to be the longest 5 years in history but we should be ready to accept our mistake we made on the 20th of September 2011 and move on.Let’s get people who are educated in future and not the Kambwili type who avoid answering questions in parliament and resort to Vulger launguage.

  19. This is the early signs of detectorship, this needs to come to an end. We voted in (even those who voted in the opposite direction – 53% who are the majority) for Sata to rule us with fairness and not what is slowly manifesting now. Pls PF be fair and developmental agenda should be the main stay of your politics and not witchhunting. Pls move the development agenda for the benefits of all…Bambas, Tongas, Tumbukas, Lozis, Kaondes etc all they need is development and to be respected even when they did not vote for Sata

  20. Why is he the only one who has issues with the Police out of the many that were recalled?

This fake Pastor has been up to no good at all!

  21. Why have Bantustans invaded LT. this kind of language is only found at one primitive and tribalistic site calling itself ZWD. Stop using Z and replace it with B, BWD. PF is the ruling party for the next five years whether you like it or not. Just start organising your tribal parties before the wind completely wipe you out of opposition.

  22. #13 Your sense of humour… Nevers and indeed this learned lawyer Sekwiba should not cry blue murder just yet. Instead they should let the due process of the law (however “unprofessional” it may seem) to take its course so that we see who’z laugh comez last at the end of the day.

  23. It’s a shame to see what the MMD has become. To be led by RB who was not from the grassroots, now to be rallying support behind a man who also is not from the grassroots. Also, I think given the situation, Muteteka is best option the party has. He represents a fresh face!

  24. @32 Italian Bunga Bunga. You really reflect the brains of your uncle and his entourage. You can’t even use common sense. Are we talking about Pastors or Politicians without brains. Even a Child would smell something is going on here. Why do you want to contradict what sensible People are commenting.

  25. @Diaspora. Fake Pastor was just me putting scorn on it. You should have been looking at the first paragraph.

    You are not very intelligent!

  26. It seems tongas are frustrated.Sata will rule for 5years.Ha ha ha bantustan people are in trouble. In eastern we won’t give u a vote maybe in Northwestern and mumbwa areas

  27. I have to feel for Dr. Malama and the rest of the Police Force. They are merely following orders and they have to be seen to be doing something or they lose their jobs. It will soon come to pass. The least Nevers Mumba can do is not to be destracted by this aimless witchhunt. My guess is that, if there is anything to answer for it is likely to be the usual incompetency issues so ubiquitous in Zambian missions abroad. The President is afflicted to a much greater degree of this illnesses, I am afraid. To pin anything on Nevers personally amounts to my last dollar. Thanks.

  28. You Luvales,Tongas, Bembas, Chewas, Lozis are all tribalists. A lenje man handled the affairs of this country with devotion, diligence, discipline, no tribalism, respected rule of law, respected christian values etc. No lenje benefited except for those that were picked on merit. Development was distributed evenly for Zambians. He had no vendettas and even reconciled with the cobra. Let`s look for another one from a neutral tribe.

I am a circumcised Chokwe/Luchazi. Ever head of one?

  29. Ms Kanjela said police had secured an appointment with Dr Mumba for Tuesday next week and that their action to invite him even before they were ready was necessary during investigations.

  30. One thing for sure we Zambians really concentrate on non issues. Just someome being a president does not mean that suddenly they remember where all foreign missions are. I thought the issue here is whether or not Nevers misappropriated funds while in Canada. Whether it was Toronto or Ottawa is irrelevant. You should be grateful that you have a transparent president who is openly fighting corruption but all I am hearing is tribal that tribal this. What a bunch of morons we are.

  31. The bitterness and hatred being spewed hre can only come from Bantustan party followers. We know the tone which is synonmous with ZWgalu. We ARE IN CONTROL OF PLOT 1 BOY! Wait for your turn perhaps in 2040. Haahaahaaahaaaa H.H akafwa ne cikonko. ^:)^

  32. Can someone tell me where the Zambian embassy is based in Canada. Is it Ottawa or Toronto? Why don’t we seem to get these fine details correct? Mushota is based in Glasgow, UK but most people in Zambia say that she is in London. Other Zambians who are all over UK like Hull Huddersfield, Halifax, Staines, Walsall, Wednesbury, Rugby etc., are all said to be in London back home. Looks Chongwe is not Lusaka, Namwala is not Lusaka, Mporokoso or Kamitondo and Buchi are not Lusaka. As my daughter would say when you are stressing her out; I hate you!!!

  33. LOGIC! Y chase Mumba when Chungu still have billions,’ chiwamila galu’ WHAT a joke !! is this a village court hearing or the police @ national level. WE need a morden police service not prsidential boot licker how leave a thief and bark @ the wind.
