Health Deputy Minister Dr. Patrick Chikusu has warned that government will fire and take legal action against any health personnel who will be caught stealing drugs from health centers.

Speaking when he addressed health workers at Lewanika General Hospital in Mongu , Dr Chikusu stated that it is unacceptable for anyone to steal drugs from hospitals and clinics.

He emphasized that government spends huge sums of money in procuring the drugs which are meant to cure diseases being faced by many people in the country.

This follows remarks by Western Province Medical Officer Albert Sitali that there has been a report of alleged thefts of medical drugs by health personnel at various health centers across the province.

And Dr. Chikusu assured the nation that there will be no shortage of drugs in all health centers across the county adding government has procured enough drugs.

He stated that the PF government is committed to providing quality health care service to the people of Zambia hence the increase in this year’s budgetary allocation to the health sector from K1.2 trillion last year to K2.2 trillion this year.

Meanwhile, the 100% salary increment to health personnel across the country has cheered health workers in Western Province.

Dr. Chikusu said further disclosed to the workers that government will also introduce housing and motor vehicle loans to health personnel across the country.

He explained that this is in order to motivate the health personnel across the country and inspire those abroad to return and work for their country.

The Minister should go beyond issuing simple threats. He should address the root cause to ensure loop holes are sealed as much as possible.

Everywhere there are some people who will pilfer irrespective of how they are “well looked” after. It iz alright for government to issue such threats to health personel, but there are more cardinal issuez that need to taken into consideration about the welfare of workers. Although, poor or no conditionz at all should never be uzed az an excuze to steal/pilfer.

The same execuses we used to get in the Kaunda Goverment about people stealing Medicines. The fact is that there is not enough medicine because the government has got no policy on health and has not acquired enough medicines. Yes I agree that there is stealing but let us not make the issuer bigger than it really is. Given us your plan and how you are to address the health inequalities, Mr Minister!

This is what I can never understand about Zambian politicians. Dr Chikusu is a Pharmacist and a technocrat, but now that he has been infected with the politics bug he is also behaving just like a stupoured man. There is a Penal code that deals with theft and robbery or any such like criminal acts. Why not say that any person caught stealing will be handed over to the Police to be charged and tried. During this time, they will be on suspension until the matter is determined in a court of law. What is wrong with this civilised way of dealing with this? They all just want to sound tough and ku bwebweta all the time. I despair!

What was once the sole property of celebrities who flaunt the red carpet had now reached simple women who like to show off in the social event or among their friends group
