Soccer fans injured as roof collapses

Share

Daring soccer fans trying to catch on a glimpse of the aircraft carrying the Chipolopolo Boys on arrival at KK International Airport in Lusaka.

About 10 Soccer fans on Monday sustained minor injuries while one sustained a fractured leg when they tried to get a glimpse of the triumphant Zambia National Soccer Team through the roof upon their arrival from the airport with trophy.

Due to overcrowding at the show grounds where the Chipolopolo boys were taken for an official reception from the airport, some soccer fans had no option but to climb on top of the roofs in order to see the squad and the trophy which has entered the country for the first time in the history of Zambian football.

Hundreds of soccer fans escaped unhurt while about 11 were injured when a roof of the workshop for a Chinese company called Jing Young belonging to a Mr Zhu collapsed and trapped them inside to deny them an opportunity to see the triumphant entry of the boys into the show grounds.

The soccer fans cried out for help while trapped inside, a situation which partially shifted attention for a few fans from the Chipolopolo boys to the accident victims who were later aided out of the building by Police officers and the Red Cross Society.

The victims were quickly attended to by the Red Cross who were positioned almost everywhere in the Show grounds and later evacuated them to the clinic while the one who sustained a fractured leg was rushed to the University Teaching Hospital.

Eye witness of the accident only identified as Inspector Kapalang’oma said the fans resisted his directives to get off from the roof and shortly fell off as they were too many of them on top of the roof.

One of the victims John Phiri of Kalingalinga compound in Lusaka could not explain what had happened to him and looked surprised to see wounds on his body while other six of whom were ladies were simply crying as they were administered first aid.

The Chipolopolo boys arrived from Libreville, Gabon on Monday where they emerged 2012 Africa Cup of Nations Champions after beating Ivory Coast on penalties in the finals.

The Copper bullets arrived home to a thunderous welcome by soccer fans who lined up along Great East road from Kenneth Kaunda International Airport to the show grounds where they had a reception arranged by Government.

  1. In the first paragraph u say ’10’ injured, in the third paragraph u say ’11’ injured. which one is which? And why are saying ‘ABOUT’ 10 as if u dont know the exact figure?. ifyabupuba fyekafyekafye.

Anyway, too bad for the victims, and congrats to the chipolopolo boys once more!!!!!!!

  2. Oh good. I’m glad the roof housed the workshop of a Chinese company. I was starting to worry from the headline that the only people to blame for this incident would have been the Zambian soccer fans who had “no option” but to climb on top of someone else’s building or the police for failing to provide adequate crowd control. At least now we can happily conclude that Mr. Zhu should be caged immediately.

    Sorry….

I mean no disrespect to the injured fans and am sorry for their fate, but seriously what do you expect when you go climbing on top of someone else’s building without permission? No doubt the injured fans will face charges of trespassing and want to repay Mr. Zhu for the damage caused…..right?

  3. People just dont listen. in the first place these guys where warned and we saw it on TV and now they are crying. do we have brains?

  4. Deaths about to happen was written all over the show. From the Airport to the Show grounds due to chaotic arrangements. Since Mr. Sata has already said there was security lapses and mis management of the whole affair let the organisers be sued for causing the deaths that occured that day.

  5. These pipo were warned to get off the roof in the first place and they did, but why did climb the roof again? If this is what sata is encouraging his supporters (Hooligans as he called them) then we should not blame the police for what happened but blame the hooligans for failing to control themselves. I was disapointed when the president supported such an action and blamed the security, instead of condaming the hooligans.

  6. We shouldn’t blame anyone, this cup was a good surprise to all over us. People become over excited and uncontrollable. If the police tarted harassing these people, we where going to records deaths on that day. Too bad for the victims

  7. thats another side of soccer. you wont hear boxing fans for instance climbing a loof to see people punching each other.murisa uganda.

  8. Unfortunate as the falling was, I could’nt help but laugh. It was like some sort of show on reality TV where poeple get injured due to shear foolishness.

  9. Its collateral damage. No problem. As boys we used to climb trees looking for fruit or just playing sport. Our parents forbade us but biy, did we listen or remember! Its part of growing up. let’s not a big issue out of this. Some of us have scars on legs that we dont remember where they came from.

  10. …”One of the victims John Phiri of Kalingalinga compound in Lusaka could not explain what had happened to him and looked surprised to see wounds on his body while other six of whom were ladies were simply crying as they were administered first aid”. John Phiri was simply in shock, and I mean honestly, were the ladies supposed to be laughing???

LMAO, some photos would be nice LT, atleast we’ll have some introperspective of this “horrible” incident. VIVA CHIPOLOPOLO….
