K19.5 billion has been set aside for rehabilitating the University of Zambia

Time Posted: March 3, 2012 9:46 pm

Education Minister John Phiri

Minister of Education, Science and Vocational Training John Phiri has disclosed that K19.5 billion has been set aside for rehabilitating the University of Zambia (UNZA).

Dr. Phiri says the institution requires serious rehabilitation in order to make the environment betters for learning.

He says among the areas that will be rehabilitated is the water and Sanitation problem prevailing at the University of Zambia.

Dr. Phiri says government will continue to support the highest public institutions of learning in Zambia specifically the University of Zambia and the Copperbelt University.

He says government will fulfill its promise of improving water and sanitation at the institution.

He was speaking on Friday when he addressed students at UNZA.

Dr. Phiri added that government will shorten the process of dialogue to quickly improve the water and sanitation at UNZA.

He says the current government is committed to expand both tertiary and secondary education institutions in the country.

The minister pointed that the Patriotic Front manifesto clearly states that government will not give a blind eye to the two institutions but deal with real issues immediately.

Dr. Phiri has meanwhile urged the students to remain united when addressing the challenges which they may be facing to avoid spoiling their future.

BUILD MORE UNIS-50 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE ONLY TWO UNIVERSITIES. THIS IS SERIOUS JOKING. AND RENAME THAT UNIVERSITY FROM UNIVERSITY OF ZAMBIA TO EAST LUSAKA UNIVERSITY OR MUNALI- THE AREA IN WHICH IT IS. YOU DON’T BUILD MORE UNIVERSITIES BECAUSE THERE’S A FINALITY ASPECT IN THE UNIVERSITY’S CURRENT NAME.

but why do you always wait for a problem to arise before you could state that you have the money in place?this shows that it may not be true and am sure without the recent issues at unza, the minister wouldn’t have disclosed this which leaves one wondering how serious this whole thing is.

They are always setting aside resources to improve things and end up singing songs until elections come up. I would like to hear progress on rehabilitation, not setting aside of money we may not see especially with cash burials and diversions…

This is no news to consulting firms in Botswana. We have been working on this for close to a year now.

You are better off building a new university instead of spending large sums of money on rehabs. Another benefit would be that one more uni would have added to existing etc.

Rehabilitation of important infrastructure like UNZA ought to be an on-going program. That’s how organised people do things, you don’t wait until the structure is reduced to a pig sty.

Hey Dr. Phiri! How did you arrive at that amount? That amount is a drop in the sea – these institutions have been neglected for decades and are potential death traps now. No maintenance has occured for over 30 years (maintenance constitutes the works that shouls ideally be done in order to prevent failure), and total deterioration is now where are. The work now required to be done is in the category of Restoration (or Refurbishment – bringing a dilapidated thing into an aceptable, usable and close to original state). Appoint Architects, Engineers and Quantity Surveyors to assess and advise accordingly. Let’s learn to do work that will make us proud of our institutions and the country at large. Don’t go and admire these things elsewhere when you can make home look the same!!

SET ASIDE? why has the money been “set aside” and not but into use right away! the students need classrooms and dorms right now? 19 billion has been set aside by the time any construction begins on the ground much of that money will have been syphoned away on tender processes committees, workshops, seminars  and task forces on the  same project. we need to see that money working on the ground right now.

My heart broke when I visited my old room in Kwacha 5 Block. Water was leaking everywhere. The ruins can not be rehabilitated. I undertake to repaint my old room if we can all chip in. I do not know how our children are studying in such unsightly ‘ruins’.How does UNZA management react when the University receives visitors? Totally disgraceful. Senanga Road and the roadnetwork on Campus are all in a shocking state. Are there no maintance crews and what happened to the Resident Engineer? All a cruel joke or oxymoron?
