The opposition Movement for Multi-party Democracy (MMD) convention to choose a new leader is in doubt following the party’s failure to raise the K3 billion required.

Party Deputy National Secretary Chembe Nyangu disclosed to QFM in an interview that the party is not likely to hold the convention any time soon because of unavailability of resources.

Mr Nyangu says a another fundraising committee consisting of himself, party national secretary Major Richard Kachingwe, party spokesperson Dora Siliya, Suresh Desai and veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga has been constituted to try and raise the required funds.

This was after the earlier committee constituted to raise the funds failed to raise the money.

Mr Nyangu says the committee will work hard to ensure that resources are found but could however not promise when the convention will be held.

Meanwhile, The Zambia Episcopal Conference (ZEC) has noted that it was imprudent for the Chief Registrar of Societies to de-register the opposition MMD.

ZEC Secretary General Cleophas Lungu has since stated that the concerns raised by Fitch Ratings on the de-registration of MMD should serve as a wake up call to the country.

Fr. Lungu notes that it is also important to ensure that the good image that Zambia has earned on the international community in terms of upholding democratic principles is not distorted.

The clergy notes that it is important that principles of democracy such as freedom of expression and association are upheld.

Fitch Ratings has expressed concern on the country’s policy direction and governance quality following the de-registration of the MMD.

Fitch has warned that if the decision to de-register the MMD is upheld and by-elections are called, there will also be adverse fiscal consequences.

The Rating Agency says holding elections will put unnecessary strain on the budget or divert funds from much-needed capital spending.

  1. The Mmd died when Chiluba handed the presidency to Mwanawasa.Mwanawasa picked Banda as vice president.Banda is the man who was defeated by Penza in munali constitency in 1991.The party died a long time ago and i dont know if it can be salvaged. Its high time people looked for viable options especially with the Pf blundering every day.GOD BLESS ZAMBIA.

  2. These guys have no idea how to raise money. They depended fully on tax payers money and stealing from shoddy deals. It is time to learn new skills now. Dora should join Mampy’s dance crew.

  3. Why is so much money needed to hold a party conference?

K3 billion (…note not K3 trillion) is roughly $600,000 and seems excessive. Better for MMD to downscale and get itself a new leader who can unite the party now!

  4. This just shows that they used to dip their filthy fingers into the tax payer’s coffers. Not too long ago they ran the most expnsive campaign. Where is the left over cash?

  5. Who cares about that convention? Trying to find ways of making allowances , in zambia corruption i the order of the day, too much talking with no action, poverty levels are very high, people underfed, their is dusty all over the list is endless..God help this little country

  6. MMD should just be left to die a natural death, the party members are not serious at all. Just think of the expensive campaign, buried billions, foreign accounts, villa trusts, excess bicycles, hotels and lodges, the list is endless and they claim they have no money for a convention? I feel sad that this is the party a lot of us helped to form, we left because it was hijacked by people who did not have our original vision.

  7. MMD could have carried out a very “SUCCESSFUL” convention if they where still in still in power…but this cant happen because we all know where these *****S got the money from….I hope Liato will win his case so that he donates the DIRTY money that bustard stole….otherwise…MMD IS DIED IN SEPTEMBER LAST YEAR…..we are just waiting for a decent burial….

  8. With these rains, I am sure most of those guys who buried money in the sand could not locate the places because of tall grass. Ahahahahaha

  9. Does it mean members of nec are not willing to put in even a single ngwee? This party is made up of a bunch of greedy characters.

  10. Its a shame to note that MMD is broke at this time when few months ago, they where shining with plenty of resouces.(buses, vans, bicycles, hummermills, t-shits , vitenges , hefty allowances etc). you mean all those claiming to be economists/solution prividers to its crisis could not advice the party on savings or investment? MMD has very rich people such as business men former ministers with huge gratuity, they cant donate to save their beloved party from chaos? 3 billion for convention+ 4billion for registra of societies=7billion required. very emarassing for a former ruling party to be in such a situation.

  11. The problems of MMD is purely failer by the party to survive on it’s own without using GRZ funds. The party shud judt go into archives and zambians shud never these crocks and chance near government cofers.

  12. Please leave LUPIA BANDA alone, why always talking about him? Bwana inu pheee! osadandaula, Kodi kuno kumudzi ku Malawi mubwera liti?Timakusowani nthawi zonse.

  13. The Jesuits should just shut up.  It is they and the kaponyas who put us in this sh!t with PF and their beloved Satana.  Why are they whining now when their ugly Catholic is ruining the country?

  14. no 19 know that the Catholic Church is full of intellectual who know what they are talking about, impartial voice. His Excellence Mr MC Sata has the right to belong to any Church group as He is with the Catholic Church. Learn to be sober, mature, wise and sensible when you speak even when you hide behind your Laptop

  15. The former Sangwapo government of RB…..MMD was privatised along time ago.So chaps with that sangwapo money they are keeping it properly for their future use.Only the unfortunate ones like Liato who did not bury theirs well, those that burried theirs tactifully they are still smilling.Selfishness has also engulfed the privatised party, chaps like that Chisokone market Nkandu we understand was also given some billions that he pocketed, can’t he and others contribute, firstly to pay k400million to the registrar of societies and for their so called convention.

  16. i cheated zambians in believing that mmd stole so that i could be in state house but my lies are catching up with me.

  17. Ba pf u r failures, just shut up and see what mmd will do,the convention will be there. We are just gathering info from u dull ones on how u ll react upon hearing tht we cant raise 3billion. U cant even implement a policy, shame on u kaponyaz.

  18. No future for MMD. So why contribute? Its time for its MPs to jump ship. And the ealier u jump the better. Just wait & see.
