The Zambia Police has revealed that Zambia International Rally champion Mohammed Essa has been released on bond after being charged with causing death by dangerous driving.

Police spokesperson Elizabeth Kanjela said Essa was arrested and detained at Lusaka’s Castel Police Station after he allegedly hit an
indentified male pedestrian around 19:00 hours on Sunday.
Kanjela added that the motor sport ace will appear in court soon without giving a specific date.
“He was arrested on Sunday around 21:00 hours,” she said.

“Appearing in court, I will just say soon but he was released on bond yesterday (Monday) around 09:00 hours,” Kanjela added.

The accident happened hours after Essa was crowned champion of the 2012 Puma Zambia International Rally championship.

Essa,22, is Zambia’s sole representative in the ARC this year and leads the eight-legged annual championship by 27 points and after
three rounds, he has a chance to win his maiden African title this year.

  1. Very sad indeed for the family of the deceased and the champion. Obviously he must have been over speeding. As good a driver as he is, controlling a car running at a reasonable speed should not be a problem. Over speeding must have the major factor. Sport requires alot discipline and successful sport men and women are those who are disciplined. It looks like he is failing to handle success.

  2. Police please cage him please plz. He should face justice or tribunal will be set for dangerous driving.

  3. This brings to the fore the legendary Satwant Sighn (sp). He was never overspeeding on the open road. But on the rally circuit he was the AfricanChampion. He was really and really drives slowly on the open road. Mohammed should learn from this.

  4. take ur pick; money or human life, the choice is straight forward if u r undeveloped like zambia coz all Zambias are only told to put the faith in God. its really a shame RIP man hope u didnt leave kids behind

  5. So sad for for both essa and the deceased’s family. He must have been excited after a major boost of bringing honours to the country which the country has lost to the Zimbabweans the past few years. This can happen to anyone and he is still young.RIP to the man who died in that accident.

  6. Pa Zed even after a long race; a professional rally driver, drives himself home at neckbreak speed!!LOL, cage him have you seen his facebook page use it as evidence to clap down on reckless driving.

  7. Can the cops even prove he was speeding? Only in Zambia the driver is always charged regardless of whose fault it maybe! Pedestrians on Kafue Rd should by now know of the risk of crossing a high speed motorway! Accidents like this will continue its not the first and deff not the last. The whole road is a big black spot that needs urgent attention so we can stop blaming the drivers or the pedestrians.

    • Do you really understand what it takes to be a driver. Even at 20km/h you can cause a fatal accident. As a driver  you should always be alert and know what is happening around you. 90% of fatal road accidents in Zambia are caused by reckless driving.

  8. This pedestrians should use the foot bridges to cross this kafue road this particular road is a main road but people cross it any how this pedestrian must have been drunk as usual

  9. The largest responsibility lies with the driver!

Thats just how it is,…! If one isn’t willing to take that responsibility, they shouldn’t be behind a wheel….!

  10. where there is money there is a way , he wont be caged.
why don’t pedestrians use those expensive bridges on that road ?
why do we have poor or no lighting even on cairo road?
why  do we have street boys/beggers appearing at random  on highways like kafue road ?

  11. He is not chiildish! He is a very sensible person. Everyone does get excited after they win but it does not mean in excitement he caused this accident. It was a mistake and I know it was grave mistake because it did cost somones life but essa didn’t do it knowingly. Besides essa should not be the only one to be blamed because people have the habbit of crossing the rooad carelessly.
