All street vendors in Lusaka including those on Lumumba road and Freedom way are expected to leave the streets in Seven days.

Lusaka Province Minister Gerry Chanda says he is working with the Ministry of Local government to clear the streets of Lusaka of vendors.

He says a survey carried out in Lusaka has revealed that there are about 5-thousand empty spaces in various markets in the city which the vendors can occupy.

Colonel Chanda has told ZNBC news that the new directive is not negotiable and government will not hesitate to act against those that will defy the order.

At the weekend Lusaka Mayor Daniel Chisenga has announced that the council will on Monday open a Desk for vendors at the civic centre for registration.

Mr Chisenga says no vendor will be allowed on the streets after Sunday next week.

  1. Please bring sanity to the city! What a shame this is! A government without teeth and with lawlessness is a shame!

  2. Formalise the vendors and place them in reasonables spaces so that it will be easy to collect revenue from them. Datarise them…

    • You are right ndoda. They could be a source of revenue instead of focusing on the formal sector only. GRZ  could even start giving them licenses to trade in specified places. Imagine how much could be collected if GRZ charged them say K50,000 per week.

  3. About time we had some sanity to the streets, but please don’t relent as has been the case in the past

  4. That is the way to go. I wish every provincial administration was this assertive. I was in Livingstone over the weekend and the town centre of the so called tourist capital of Zambia has been taken over by street vendors. This is not on.

  5. PF has brought back filth to the capital city. No standards. This party seems to hate good hygiene.

  6. Gerry Chanda can make constructive decisions because he has his own money, for those who are begging for jobs they are yes sir and will only make decisions that are a directive from the President. We need managers who already have a base not looking for a job because they will not develop the country but only put more money in their pockets.

  7. Good luck. According to Col what’s his name, this past Tuesday was the last and final deadline for all the vendors to clear off Cairo Road but am pretty sure they’re still there!

  8. How many ultimatums are you going to issue Soldierboy! Am told traders have left established markets to look for business on the streets because of your usual light hearted directives.

  9. PF govt at work. Always using ‘hit and miss’ methods. ‘Try and error’ kind of doing things. You cant run govt like that, honestly. KAPONYAZ vs BAKAPONYA…hahahahahahaha!!!!!

  10. this is very good Mr Minister!! I quote “There are about 5000 spaces in variecy markets in the city”These people should just be shifted to the market and this is a clean way of bringing sanity to the city unlike the way it was were police could fire live amunition to the un armed civilians over street vending.CONGRATES PF, this is a very good way of dealing with such issues.

  11. PLZ GET RID OF THESE FILTHY VENDORS FROM ALL CORNERS OFLUSAKA AND THE OTHER TOWN AROUND THE COUNTRY FOR ONCE AND FOR ALL. .IF NEEDED PLEASE USE THE ZAMBIA ARMY.OFFICERS WHO ARE JUST SITTED IN THEIR BARRACKS.WE SHALL HAVE MORE INVESTERS ONCE THE CITIES ARE MADE CLEANER. VIVA BA SATA, VIVA PF

  12. @ 5 the govt doesnt work for votes neither does it serve group interests, its there for the gd of the country as a whole, some decisions will seem unfair, hard and rough to some people but must be taken, u till understand later.

  13. Who should we believe on this issue? Am pretty sure that even the vendors themselves can make a proper decision.

  14. A Riot which Stella Libongani and that dull Charity Katanga will fail to quench. Wait. Pop corns please.

  15. I do not think this will be entertained by CNP especially that he thinks these are the guys he owes his presendency to. He will come and put everything upside down and these socalled ministers and whatever you call them will look foolish like lost extras. I don’t think CNP will have kind words for hese guys who want sanity in our capital city. CNP likes dirty so long they vote for him. Anyway let’s wait and see. If anything most of the people who voted for PaFwaka like dirty and fithyness and I can prove it to you if space allows. I rest my case!

  16. people in government, what are your journeys in other countries for? dont you see your friends countries? look at those fikabova filelya no bwali mumusebo.these are shits indeed.nkafifumamofye mu Z. nichifye Z ni Z.

  17. Come election time and the PF govt will reverse this directive to woo voters.Their stomachs are more important than the nation.

  18. At least people were allowed to trade in streets while they were looking for space in Markets. However this prompted even with space in markets come to the streets. Now its a good move by PF to take back these people to markets. Thanks PF at least the City will look clean.

  19. Ma ma ma Gerry!!! You do this after UKwa CNP goes out to UK. Wapya mwaice. Alebwela maybe this week, or next week or next month or next year – katwishi mweee.

  20. Thank God!My biggest fear is a truck mashing up those vendors.Ticking time bomb that.Move them Gerry before we see horror!

  21. You guys, have you cleared this with the President? We don’t want flip flops anymore, be certain about what you want to do and stick to it, like Mr Shamenda on minimum wages. If it backfires and you lose your job, don’t say you were not warned ka.

  22. Citizens of a peaceful country such as Zambia must adhere to the laws of the land. In this case, it is imperative that the street vendors must acquaint themselves with the city ordinances that are in place. Those defaulting the law must be fined and made to appear in court for violating the law. We have to be real with matters of this kind. One Zambia One Nation.

  23. Wherever they will be this vendors its a problem because something is lucking the guidelines or rules and order to the vendors. The people to blame is the council, because they just collect money from the vendors without removing the refuse.

  24. What will cnp do when he comes back from is it britain or india? anyway good move only that we are yet to see action and the promises have been out for some time now!

  25. ha ha nonsense! we’ve been here before only a million times. heyll clear vendors for 2 hours and all will be back to nornmal. The same way they “demolished” illegal structures in ibex hill a few years ago, , after that “demolishment” there is a nice and growing shanty town praise the lord! i think im gonna have a seizure!…

  26. Nkondo iyo…..!! If Katanga thinks these vendors are like balless UPND cadres…..these r the donchi pipo and Col Galu chanda u know them better most of these jimbos are from kanyama.

  27. This shouldn’t even be debatable. Are the detractors seriously content with seeing streets littered by illegal vendors when structures have been put in place for them to sell from? How many of you are ecstatic knowing that your taxes are subsidizing the rest of the country because the tax base is so tiny coupled with very little, if any, revenue collected from those in the informal economy?

Wake up people! This is not someone else’s problem or country, it’s ours and we are ALL to blame for its malaise. Every able bodied citizen should be producing something the he/she can trade. Let’s kick laziness out and instill production as a means of survival. Only then will we ever realize the true potential Zambia holds!

  28. 7 days is short notice you will incite violence. start moving them street lot by street lot give people time don’t just wake up and shock them from nowhere

  29. You really dont have things to do pa zed. dealing with the same issues since mwakaunda i.e potholes, street venders, corruption. dilapidated buildings, dirty dry streets, damn politicians, etc

  30. Do you really need to insult the Presidency. “Balls being attended to” shame on you. You have no manners, not even bad ones.

    • Its is true so why get your knickers in a twist? Your president has a prostrate problem. Ie he has problems down there. Not surprising given his age.

  31. Ain’t Zambia a free market economy? Street vending is part and parcel of a free market. Intervention in this will only give monopoly to a few shop owners, and will only delay the inevitable. Everyone wants a share of the booming economy.
Those calling their fellow human beings ‘dirty’ are missing out. These vendors are out there having experience on how to run with an economy. Chase them from the streets and they may end up selling in your yards.
If you really want a clean shopping area, you should go out and build a private shopping mall. There is still plenty of in lovely Zambia, otherwise check your e-motions – they are capable of moving your blood too fast for your comfort.
    Sorry about this sermon :)

  32. CITIES IN ZED ARE A BIG SHAME. MARKETS COUNTRYWIDE ARE EMPTY AND ROTING. ALL MARKETERES HAVE MOVED TO STREETS. TOMATOES, FRESH FISH, ORANGES, CLOTHES, MEAT,SHOES, AND NSHIMA ARE SOLD IN THE STREETS.

  33. UKWA SAID HE DOESN’T WANT TO BE MADE UNPOPULAR BY REMOVING STREET VENDORS .
NKANDU LUO IS AWARE OF THAT.
    LETS WAIT AND SEE.

  34. Caught in between, the people who voted you in and the right work.as much has it is true the vedors need to stay in the streets for they put food on the table. Through that. The best way is to leave them alone and so that they trade.street vending is everywhere

  35. let us stand to reason on the dangers of street vending,in my own opinion people should be given skills and knowledge which will help them to do other businesses and get into formal sector. the gvmnt should not just be talking we want to see them building markets and allocate these people.its very sad that most of our streets ar very dirty and the govnt still thinks its campaign period they are not considering the fact that these markets are becoming dirty every day. i dont know how it will be in three years from now.
