Political tension between Republican President Michael Sata and MMD leader, Dr Nevers Mumba has intensified with the MMD leader storming State house to seek audience with the President.

Dr. Mumba stormed State House in an attempt to seek clarification from Mr. Sata over his continued appointment of MMD members of Parliament to the PF Government without consultation.

But Dr. Mumba was asked to leave by State House officials. President Sata has since appointed two MMD MPs, David Phiri of Mkaika constituency and Richard Tonde Taima of Solwezi East constituency.

On Saturday,President Sata said that he was disappointed that Dr Mumba is distorting facts to cause confusion in the country.

The President said this in his response to a letter from Dr Mumba, regarding the appointment of nine opposition members of Parliament to deputy ministerial positions in the Patriotic Front (PF) government.

In the letter, Dr Mumba said that the constitution allows the President to pick ministers from the opposition but that the appointing authority should do this in consultation with the opposition.

“In the event that you feel a particular MMD member of Parliament would be useful to your Government, what we expect is to communicate to the leadership of our party for such consideration, as the constitution does not restrict you in giving jobs to members of Parliament,” Dr Mumba said

However, reacting to Dr Mumba’s claims that the PF intends to diminish democracy, President Sata said he would never turn his back on Zambians who offer themselves for public service, regardless of their political affiliation.

“It is frankly staggering to envision, let alone think that this dishonesty, deliberate distortion of facts and acute appetite to cause confusion in the governance of this country is emanating from yourself, a well-known man of the collar.
“Let me underline that my Government is determined to preside over the affairs of this country in a reconciliatory and inclusive manner,” President Sata said.

The President also reminded Dr Mumba of the role Government plays in moving the country forward, not to oppose for the sake of opposing which he said would be immoral.

“Zambia is bigger than all of us,” President Sata said, “and the earlier you in the opposition grasped that, the better for our motherland.”

In a letter to President Sata dated July 11, 2012, Dr Mumba charged that the PF government had decided to diminish democracy and opposition by reducing opposition presence in Parliament through unnatural means.

“We are very alarmed at your consistent attempts to dislocate the tenets of democracy by offering deputy ministerial jobs to our members of Parliament without any regard to the leadership of our party.

“We believe that both the PF and Zambia need a healthy and vibrant democracy because it guarantees stability in the nation and instills confidence on the part of investors,” Dr Mumba’s letter reads in part.

  5. My question how many MPs does he want to appoint as DEPUTY MINISTERS? Seconddly, I thought all deputy ministers portfolios are filled? This govt is wasting resources coz such positions are useless and not add value to the nation. How can all ministries have two deputy ministers? Is he saying that David and Richard will new for new ministries – tourism and labour? He has laot of PF MPs to appoint from. I have great respect for Davd Phiri and Richard but if they go ahead then they are imbeciles to say the least! Whats wrong with MMD MPs they cant emulate their UPND colleagues in principles!!

    • I think you have missed the trick. PF did not have a landslide victory which makes it hard for them in parliament. Sata is being clever by weakening the opposition so that he can win when it comes to voting in parliament.

  9. Sata is honesly turning Zambia into a circus. For once, I agree with Mumba, Just how many opposition MPs does Sata want into his govt when he has dozens of his own PF to choose from? These MPs must be carreful, Sata does not necessarily want them in his govt, the motive is to decimate the opposition, period. This is where you have to give Tonga MPs respect, non of them will sell their principles for inferior deputy cabinet posts. And one honestly wonders how many ministers this old fool wants to have?

  11. Nevers was chased from state house. How many does President Sata want to appoint? Article 47 (2) of the constitution does not give him any limit. Nevers likes hiding in consultation when he is looking for a job. He did the same with Levy when the Opposition trusted him as its spokesperson.

  83. Nevers Mumba is also a donkey..Just a few months ago he traveled to Lubumbashi and tried to have an audience with Katumbi without an appointment. He was rightly turned away. One would expect that he had learnt a lesson. Serious minds would agree that his recent state house episode smacks of arrogance, insolence and sheer stupidity on the part of someone who once served as VEEP. Even the Veep, Ministers etc need to have an appointment to have an audience with the head of state.     Remember that the credible late LPM, SC, fired Nevers because he was a danger to government and the country?

    It was only RB who, in his supposed wisdom gave Nevers a chance by appointing him HC to Canada. I cannot comment on his performance and achievements while in this position because I am not informed on this.

    However, the truth is, Nevers cannot make a good political party leader, let alone a President of a country.

    I say this without my tongue in the cheek, MMD should not retain Nevers just on the integrity label, but added to that must be leadership qualities, human maturity and humility.

  98. It’s complete utter bunkum to allege I am wishing Sata for dead, I am just stating a fact apparent to all with eyes to see and ears to hear. The man is 75 years old, he has suffered two heart attacks inside of 5 years. His advanced prostate cancer has seen him to India and most recently to UK seeking specialised medical attention. His deteriorating physical appearance is tastement to his failing health and to suggest he quits to spend his last days with family in peace and to seek redemption for his many sins is being realistic, not sadistic. As a nation, we cannot afford another president dying in office, awa, luhanile!

You have never been honest to both yourself and the people of Zambia especialy the christians. Pual in 2 timoth has writtern about the qualities of a leader in church as well as in secular life. your have misappropieted church funds, including Government funds. what more do you want. any sychologist can tell from your body language and face expressions you can not be trusted. Remember not too long ago, you were part of the corruption victims after being trusted by Zambian people with power as Vice president as well as ambassador, No accountability at all. do you even pay tithe from stolen money? Only God knows.
