OLYMPICS: Munyonga Disqualified!

Share

From seven, they were five. Zambia’s Olympics medal hopes hit again on Tuesday for a second successive time.

Judoka Boas Munyonga was on Tuesday ejected in forgettable fashion after he was disqualified in his 81 kilogram class round of 32 bout against Takahiro Nakai of Japan.

Munyonga was disqualified for an infringement on Nakai after holding onto his leg in the opening minute of their bout at Excel Arena in London.

He joins swimmer Zane Jordan who on Sunday failed to qualify for the 100 meters men’s backstroke semifinals.

Later on Tuesday evening, light welterweight boxer Gilbert Choombe hopes he won’t buck the trend when he takes on Jeffrey Horn of Australia.

Meanwhile, Swimmer Jade Howard hopes to keep Zambia’s swimming interest alive when she takes to the pool on Wednesday in the women’s 100 meters freestyle at the Aquatics Centre.

On Friday, Chauzje Choosha will run in the preliminaries of the women’s 100 meters at the Olympic Stadium.

100 meters runner Gerald Phiri and 800 meters specialist Prince Mumba take to the track on August 4 and 6 respectively at the Olympic Stadium.

  1. Zambia, is not a country to represent at olympics, please ba LT stop giving updates on zambian team atleast kenya, SA, UG, ETHIOPIA.

  2. Such stories are expected from the Zambian camp. We are not surprised. Ninshi? Takuli ubwali. They should have carried Kapenta na kalembula.

  3. #1 Mphuno yes are right, there is no need to be reporting embarrassments. Zambians are violent, they copy trends from their leaders. How can that Judo guy be that violent to a Japanese, if it was a Chinese one can understand.

  4. No.1 and 2

Are you guys serious? LT needs to be professional and they should report on all latest developments, especially the ones which concern Zambians.

  6. Zambians lets support our Zambian team representing us at the London Olympics no matter what happens. By so doing more Zambians will be interested in sport. Tiyende Pamodzi Zambia.

  7. The rules regarding leg attacks/holds have recently changed,  a number of  judoka have suffered similar disqualifications at  the 2012  Olympics.  Boas was unlucky in the draw  but he’ll bring  back a great experience of the Olympics and will hopefully inspire  young  judoka  in Zambia.

  8. Looks like it will be the usual east african sports powerhouses of ethiopia ad kenya to once again head the african medal table.Zambia we still got long way to go in this.

  9. I was looking at the training schedule and diet of the south african swimmer who won last night, beating the greatest olympian who has ever lived. The south african is chad de clos and he beat Micheal Phelps of the USA who has 19 medals to his name. Lookin at that diet and training schedule it is easy to see that we simply do not have athletes of that level of detfermination. You cant be training for 800M then go on to eat pap. It doesn’t work like that. We need just one serius coach, we can do it its just the heart from leadership to do it is not there. I dont think Sata is even in the slightest bit following anything on the olympics and the delegation that went is probably doing more shopping than anything. Its a disgrace.

  10. This chap was disqualified in the opening one minute?????? He should JOIN Frattelli Locci under House arrest. He has embarrassed us Zambians. he went and held the opponents leg in fear of a kick or a thud from being thrown on the canvas. atase…….

  11. Imwe that is what happens when you have officials who are not exposed and athletes who cannot even go to tournaments pa south africa apa. We need exposure and officials who are not cheap and are willing to let the atheletes travel. Go Zambia!!! Zambia iwina ichungulo.
