Levy Mwanawasa remembered

Share

THE Baptist Fellowship of Zambia has described the late third Republican president Levy Mwanawasa, as a hero who upheld honesty and integrity until his death.

And the organisation has thanked the Government for naming some of the facilities after Dr Mwanawasa.

Executive Secretary Reverend Luke Buleya was speaking in Lusaka yesterday at the fourth memorial service held at Twin Palm Baptist Church in honour of Dr Mwanawasa organised by the Levy Patrick Mwanawasa Foundation.

Dr Mwanawasa died in France on August 19 2008 at the age of 59.

Rev Buleya told congregants that the late president would be remembered for his immense sacrifices he made to his family and the nation during his life and duty.

Rev Buleya said Zambia’s history could not be complete without giving the good examples of what Dr Mwanawasa did for the country.

Wife of the late president, Maureen Mwanawasa, said in an interview that she had carried on with life in the absence of her husband because she believed in God for strength and inspiration.

Ms Mwanawasa said she supported calls by the Levy Mwanawasa Foundation to have August 19 declared a National Day like the South Africa’s Nelson Mandela Day.

And in his tribute to Dr Mwanawasa, Levy Patrick Mwanawasa Foundation Chairperson Moses Banda said Dr Mwanawasa never had a luxurious stay in power as he worked hard to fight drought, HIV and AIDS and other challenges which had rocked Zambia.

Dr Banda recounted how the former president embraced people from different walks of life including opposition leaders.

One of Dr Mwanawasa’s children Chipo read out from the Bible 2nd Timothy 4 Verse 1 to 8.

Among the people who attended the service were first Republican president Kenneth Kaunda, Deputy Secretary to the Cabinet for administration Teddy Mulonga, United Party for National Development (UPND) leader Hakainde Hachilema.

Others were Heritage Party president Godfrey Miyanda, Zambians for Empowerment and Development (ZED) president Fred Mtesa and other political party representatives, relatives, friends, and church leaders.

  1. Dr.PLM SC. A great dry well of Zambia more appreciatednow, than these days where even dew, let alone moist is not known.

  2. Wil be missed, but the family tree still haunts zambians, and it has birthed kolwestans to rule and dominate the entire government and quasi-government.Only KK deserves to have KK day or Chiluba as the icon of democracy.Chiluba’s government and RB’s government were the most represented governments cutting accross all four corners of the country.

    • Chiluba gave birth to the institutionalization of corruption, he erroneously privatized companies and whose proceeds we do not know where they went! We can talk about KK day but certainly not chiluba!!

  3. Son of the soil…  called a cabbage when alive and now called a hero when you are dead. MYSRIP
And yes we need a national day for this founding father so that the children of our children can know the great men who have walked our land in honour.

  4. Levy may have tried his best during his time as republican President, but the issue of declaring August 19th a national day in his honour should not be entertained.
Naming of certain facilities after him is more than enough.

  5. We cant make august 19 as a national holiday because:

    1. We dont know the exact day levy died atleast its not 19 August(he must have died in egypt). 2. Not every zambian voted and liked him 3. He was a cabbage that was awaken from a sleep to take over the presidency 4. He was not fluent in english (everytime he gives a speech, one wud, jut doze off and can’t imagine how many grammar mistakes he could make, imagine calling his wife morinyo just because he was in brazil and the brazilians where introducing almost everybody with a “nho or nyo ” at the end.

  6. Great son of the soil. Dr. Levy Patrcik Mwanawasa SC. MYSRIEP. This man was my president indeed. akulu mphuno go and praise your brother Rupiah and leave the good name of LPM alone. Talking evil of a man who cannot defend himself is being the most indecent!
