Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Professor Nkandu Luo has described as baseless, news reports that she will soon quit politics to take up a lucrative job with the United Nations.
Professor Luo who is also Munali PF MP said in an interview that she has no intentions of resigning her from government adding that such reports are concocted lies.
“Let me state that President Michael Sata is the one who appointed me to serve in his government and naturally he will be the first to be informed if at all there are such things,” Prof Luo said.
“I will continue serving the people of Munali until the five year mandate given to me elapses.”
She added, “It is really sad that Zambia is now becoming a country that thrives on lies, we lie every day and it is becoming normal. This story about me leaving government is another lie.”
Professor Luo cautioned the public to dismiss such reports with the highest levels of contempt it deserves.

Yes, some people do not really care whether they are called professor fimo fimo while still teaching in college or after leaving the profession. But that is a personal choice and not the norm. Also it is “customary” to Address a former President as PRESIDENT so and so without qualifying it. And no one will prosecute you for it! This is done all the time, especially here in America. in the states, the title Prof refers to the position your hold in the university, usually chair of a faculty and/or department. Hence they would say Dr Rice, prof in middle east politics. In the British system, to be prof, one has to be in university, in active research and the title seems to be retained as such.
The other term abused in Zambia is Honourable, which relates the title used in parliament when addressing a member occupying that position. eg the honourable minister for chiefs affairs, Prof, Mr, Dr, so and so, as opposed to honourable so and so.

If they retire and the university still consults them they are given the title Professor Emeritus. At UNZA where she was a Lecturer, the title of Professor is an academic promotion. You start as Lecturer III, then move up to Lecturer II, then Lecturer I, Senior Lecturer, Associate Professor and (Full) Professor. Have you ever heard of someone calling himself or being addressed as say “Senior Lecturer BANDA” or “Lecturer III BANDA”?

#56. Professor Luo would not be called professor in the UK. In the UK Associate Professor which is a step below full professor is Reader. The confusion as arisen because we have followed the American system where Assistant Professors, Associate Professors and full Professors are all called professors unless they are writing papers. To be an associate professor is not based on years but scholarly work which is also reviewed by external reviewers.

In the UK and in Zambia you do not need to have a PhD to be a professor. There was a professor of English who did not have a PhD in the early 1970’s at UNZA in my time when Associate Professors were known as Readers. Those of you who did biology at UNZA must have come across a full professor in the Department of Biology was name I have deliberately omitted not to appear as if I want to embarrass him. But with the proliferation of PhD’s it is becoming increasingly difficult to become a professor based on scholarly work alone.

Yes, some people do not really care whether they are called professor fimo fimo while still teaching in college or after leaving the profession. But that is a personal choice and not the norm. So if people still want to affectionately call a former college professor as PROFESSOR, there is no harm or a committee that says you can’t do that! By the way, what if professor Luo decides to go back to teaching or medical research, can you tell me a committee that will reinstate her professorship?

Look, it is like someone who attains the title of JUSTICE OF THE COURT (that is High/Supreme Court Judge), they still can be called by that title even after they leave the profession. Also it is “customary” to Address a former President as PRESIDENT so and so without qualifying it. And no one will prosecute you for it! This is done all the time, especially here in America. So if someone decides to refer to Professor Nkandu Luo as PROFESSOR, having attained that title through her teaching profession and research, they are within their right to do so and there is nothing wrong with it. You, Chiselema, may chose not to call her by that title and it is also OK!
