Head teacher arrested for shooting school boy

Share

Police in Choma have arrested a Head teacher of Saint Mark’s Secondary School in the district after he shot and wounded a grade 12 pupil as he attempted to quell a violent pupil protest on Monday night.

District Commissioner Golden Nyambe confirmed the development to ZANIS in Choma today and identified the head teacher as Frederick Njamba who is currently detained at the main police station.

He said police are still investigating circumstances leading to the bizarre incidence in which the school teacher opened fire on protesting pupils.

Mr Nyambe said the head teacher allegedly opened fire on a group of protesting pupils Monday night, wounding 19 year old Lemmy Hamusonde.

He said Hamusonde who was shot in the chest sustained a fractured rib and is currently admitted to Macha Mission, about 70 kilometres from Choma town

The DC explained that trouble at the school started when Hamusonde earlier in the week attempted to force himself into a girls’ dormitory to see his girlfriend but was restrained by an alert watchman.

Hamusonde is reported to have physically assaulted the watchman in the ensuing scuffle resulting in his arrest.

Mr Nyambe said after Hamusonde was arrested and detained by police, his parents pleaded for his release so that he could continue writing his grade 12 examinations.

He said after his release from police custody, Hamusonde later mobilized other school boys and launched an attack on the watchman in the night.

The watchman raised alarm to attract help from teachers in the school compound.

The DC explained that when teachers rushed to the scene, they were pelted with stones forcing them to retreat.

Mr Nyambe said it was at this point that the head teacher rushed to his house and pulled a fire arm.

He first fired a warning shot but the protesting pupils could not retreat, forcing him to open fire on the group of protesting pupils.

Mr Nyambe said hospital authorities at Macha mission hospital have described Hamusonde’s condition as stable.

  1. This was in self defense. Hamusonde is a trouble maker. He is too old for high school anyway. A slug in the chest will cool his loins and level his head.

  2. Too much indiscipline in our schools. The headteacher should have aimed for the head; and we will have one trouble maker out of action.

  3. well well well im not even going to sympathise with this stupid hormonal teenager..causing trouble instead of studying for his exams..forced entry into a girls domitory, attacking of the night watchman, and then pelting the teachers with stones..we shud not condone lawlessness..free that head teacher already

  4. Hamusonde portrayed very useless behavior even after giving him an opportunity to complete his examination he still goes on to commit trouble. He wont even sit for them anymore with that pain i don’t think he can sit for them in hospital either. 20 years time he will realise and regret about the conduct he displayed at this moment in time.Other pupils who followed him may find themselves in a situation where they wont be allowed to sit for the remaining exams due to their participation in this.

  5. Iwe Hamusonde, you mean you can’t wait just for ten more days and have your freedom with your girlfriend? The chap should have been shot in the head, not in the chest where the pellet left only one broken rib. What a small gun that was.

  6. i have been to saint marks these school boys have razor bumps. next time he will tame his feeling better, must have been a new girl friend so wanted to bonk ka last before going mu society.

  7. Now you Stella Libongani and Solomon Jere have read the comments above. Release that Head teacher from the cells

  8. only foolish police officers can detain the headmaster who fired the weaopn in self defense. Zambia is a cursed nation where people see things in reverse. Release the headmaster.

  9. Can you the police there release that head teacher because he is right. Those boys should all be expelled from this school. Let them go abd loom the streets because they should have been studying for the exams but the hhe friend had to follow the stupid friend to go after girls. RELEASE THAT HEAD TEACHER

    • He is a gunster headteacher. I say fire him and let him join the army where he will be allowed to use the gun. Teachers are not allowed to shoot students thats final.

  10. Hamusonde Hamakala wanted to bonk. Stupid school boy. He should have aimed for the balls so that by default that was going to be some castration.

  11. Self defence. The Hamusonde boy-man is all to blame. The head teacher had no choice. He probably has a licence, so he should be set free. The Hamusonde boy man instead should be locked up as soon as he is out of hospital. He is such a shame to his parents and society.

  12. The police were to blame, the school authorities followed legal procedure by reporting the boy to them ands they had him detained. Whe parents pleaded for his release, two things should have happened. 1. Forbid him from staying in boarding school and that he has to leave school premises immediately after writing every day, parents should have found him alterve accommodation. 2. He should have escorted to class by armed police who could have waited for him outside classes to ensure he leaves school, after exams. The Head Teacher had to use force to protect his watchman and later himself and fellow teachers. He also followed procedure by firing warning shots but still teachers lives were threatened with stones, the boy is a lunatic, I hope he is handcuffed to the bed in hospital under gad!

  13. Judgement: this court has carefully heard all the 12 witnesses testifying against Hamusonde. The Headteacher has no case to answer he acted in self defence. This court regrets for the wounding of Hamusonde, but Hamusonde must be arrested and charged with causing the wounding. He must be guarded in hospital. Court rise!

  14. The boy was totally wrong so was the HEADMASTER,he should have been on police watch while taking his exams and evicted from the boarding house and banned from all premisses around the school accpt for the exam room and the nearest toilet to the exam room. However, the Headmaster is an educator a father to all those Kids who shouldnt have used a gun on a student. Under no circumstance are teachers allowed to shoot students. It horrific to imagine a teaching shooting student no matter how indiscipline the kids are. He should be fired amd never go back to teaching. If he loves gun that much he can join the Army and serve in Afghanistan for the UN

  15. Ba Paddy you are an asshole! If the Headmaster was your brother in charge of School facing that situation and later die from this hungry stupid students, what would you say upon learning that he had a gun in his hands which he failed to use? The Head Master needs shooting lessons.

  16. The student is a stupid big-headed boy. The Head Teacher should be released immidietly so that he can continue offering his services to serious students. That boy was not ready for exams, he was looking for an easy way out. Please…leave that Head teacher alone!

  17. This scenario does not sound right to me;

    1. Hamusonde attempts to see a girl friend at her domitory and is restrained by watchman
    2. Hamusonde assaults watchman that very nite
    3. Hamusonde is arrested and detained at Police station but released after pleading
    4. Hamusonde mobilises his friends to attack the watchman??? (unusual)
    5. Watchman calls for help in the nite
    6. Teachers and headteacher come to rescue of watchman
    7. Headteacher opens fire at the advancing crowd of boys and the bullet hits – Hamusonde ??? (he must have been at close range ). Winter Kabimba should defend the boy in court

  18. My say on my former school’s (St Marks Secondary School) incedent. I think the pupil is to blame what would have been the right platform to fire other than this one. I know Mr Njamba very well he is well skilled to even handle some situations physically I have seen him do that before so Im sure he had tried to avoid it by all means as we talk about the pupil lets also consider the fact that Mr Njamba’s life was also at stake and who wouldn’t defend himself in that way once oppotuity is made avaliable. . . .
