A Kabwe based police officer has been arrested and remanded in custody for allegedly raping a 19 year old woman who was picked up by law enforcers to assist with investigations over the theft of a mobile phone.

The officer who has been detained at Kabwe central police cells was formally arrested yesterday afternoon after a warn and caution statement was recorded from him.

Central Commissioner of Police Standwell Lungu confirmed the arrest of the officer in an interview but refused to disclosed his names but said he may appear in court today.

But police sources identified the officer as a Milimo Mwendabai a constable by rank.

Over the weekend the victim was picked up by police to assist with investigations because she constantly called a number of a phone believed to have been stolen.

Sources narrated that the officer in question is alleged to have picked the woman of Poleni Township at the weekend in the company of three other police officers to assist them bring to book a person who is alleged to have stolen a blackberry phone.

The source said the four officers from Kabwe Central Police Station in the company of the victim went to different townships in search of the person with the stolen phone.

But late in evening, the officers diverted the woman to a lodge but three of them left.

She remained with one officer who later forced himself on her and promised that he would release her.

The woman later managed to run out of the room half-naked and approached the security guard at the lodge who refused to open for her and that she later went to hide behind the building.

She managed to jump over the boundary fence in her naked state and reported the matter to her parents who in turn went to the police where a docket was opened.

Other police officers in the company of family members visited the scene and got a pair of trousers belonging to the victim, underwear and a wig which dropped as she struggled.

And Sources said an identification parade was conducted and the officer was positively identified by the victim.

And Young Women Christian Association of Zambia (YWCA) Coordinator Juliet Kawanda said her organization received a complaint over the matter and was hopeful it would be treated with the seriousness it deserves.

“As a women movement, we are deeply concerned that people who are tasked with the mandate to maintain the law are now the ones breaking it. We will follow this matter to the bitter end, “she said.

The police officer was detained but later released.

  12. Nyele nafuti nafuti.High time the police started dancing to the the tune too.Similar cases of female inmates being raped by officers are there. It is just a pity that the majority of the victims decides not to report such cases.

  15. Ah ah,so this organisation is still there? I thought it was one of those disbanded by Ukwa for doing nothing and just wasting tax payer’s money.Ukwa, please disband this chi HRC,maybe, just maybe we can have more money in our pockets!!!

  16. These things happen every day the Zambia police  is a rotten organisation . eight out of ten police officers are corrupt. The problem with our police officers they think citizens owe them a living they want free transport, free meals, free beer, free talk time, free sex etc. You report a crime to them they want to milk both  the complainant and the suspect.personally i have never gotten help from the police. Right now they are busy mounting fake road blocks as if they are interested in the welfare of citizens and yet just collecting festive season money for themselves

  17. Prostitutes are very cunning!! It is very possible that she undressed, screamed and ran out of the room so that she can divert attention from the phone thief to the police officer – and she has done that successfully!! In fact prostitutes always do such things – you agree to pay them 40 pin but after doing them they ask for 60 pin and if you refuse to pay the extra they cry out for rape.. Right now the phone thief has been forgotten and ALL the attention is on the police officer!! Careful with Hookers!

  18. Detained and later released? What? As a cop he should be made an example out of. I know these types of cop. He might be innocent, but I doubt. I remember one time I was picked up for loitering, with a group of young men and women. One cop escorted the rest of us to the police station, but a group of women was left behind as the cops whispered in low tones. I have no doubt that those women were forced to have sex to be released, which is why the cops had picked us up in the first place, not for any wrongdoing.

  19. These police start their roadblocs as early as 05:30hrs. This mornig when I was going for work, their was a roadblock at the Central

  20. ha ha ha!..#2 how do you know about the one mattress at HQ??..ha ha did you supply it or you are a police officer??.Anyway this story does not add up..a suspect turns hero and those other three officers just decided to go but were witness to their fellow officer diverting the poor girl..come on 4 police officers investigating a blackberry phone…what a waste of man hours 4 officers 1 phone..surely there are lots of things the other 3 officers can do..
