President Michael Sata has released 59 female prisoners countrywide as part of this year’s New Year celebrations.

This is according to an Order of Release signed by the Head of State dated December 28, 2012. President Sata signed the order in exercise of the powers vested in him by Article 59 (d) of the Constitution of Zambia.

Out of the 59 female prisoners, 43 are inmates with children, 12 are aged [above 60 years] and four (4) are expectant mothers.

The rationale behind the President’s decision is to decongest the extremely crowded prison facilities countrywide as well as reintegrate prisoners into society. In fact, this move has also resulted in the freeing of about 50 children who are below the age of three whose mothers were serving various sentences.

President Sata has counselled the released inmates to show exemplary behaviour and prove to the society that indeed they have reformed.

  1. Are these prisoners ready to be integrated back into society? Just because they are women doesn’t mean they are not maniacs or serial killers. There is a reason they are in prison in the first place. Ba Sata muletekanya limo limo

    • Its not always my bro that you have to opporse the move made by the state. It is law in zed to do what the big man has done. They ask warders on the conduct of the prisoner. Munashyeko ubututu ba chikala. Mwilatuka bakateka anyhow. Itole

    • My sister visit some of these institutions so that you familiarise yourself with what happens.Inmates are under observation by warders and those who have reformed are recommended for parole (Early release). In as much as there are offenders who go back to their bad ways, there are equally many that have truly reformed.

    • muli chipuba bakalamba imwe, you are busy opposing every decision the head of state makes amano kwati ni ka HH

  2. WELL DONE MR PRESIDENT. BUT I HOPE THESE WOMEN WILL NOT POSE TERROR IN THE SOCIETY. I THINK THEY NEED TO BE WARNED THAT AT ANY SLIGHT PROVOCATION, THE DOORS OF THE PRISONS REMAIN OPEN TO RECEIVE THESE OFFENDERS BACK WITH EVEN SEVERE PUNISHMENT.

  3. It is not new every president of Zambia has done before. But with the our current president, he does things without thinking. CNP and people shout very loud as if he is the first one to do this. Pending Fools to be booted out of office.

  4. A fooool’s gift is always as worthless as possible. Such is a gift that you expect from a silu. what does it cost to release these people. Nothing.

  5. if it has alwaz bin done by every president then 4u 2ve known,it has alwaz bin reported.so wat yo problem now.life isnt all about wat u think en politics, there is mo 2life.get ova yo self find a life.

    2 Uknown

  7. Mr President we have alot of things to do, those headlines should be left to ministers, urgently sort out Hon Lubindas issue make peace in the party and get ready for work.#7 Whats your point? proportionatly there will be more Bembas in prison and very few lozis hence your statistics if even correct, advise if wrong….

  8. After realising that the kaponyas on the streets are becoming impatient with his donchi kubeba he is now turning to prisoners (actually relatives and tribesmates  in prisons)

  9. To God be the glory for the release of those innocent children (Above 50?) including the four who are yet to be born for they were serving sentences of what they never commited. My prayer is that the released women will not go back to their vomit. Hope they have reformed enough to be encorporated back into the society.

  10. Cheap! Cheap! cheap! political expediency hoodwinking sleepy Zambians that dictator Sata is a caring, rational, action, fair and effective president. Dictator Sata discriminates in his action against male prisoners. Crime is irrespective of gender and laws of the land amd justice are blind to gender. That’s typical of dictators thinking their action is impressive to the nation when at the same time transgressing justice and fair play. A dictator will never ever get it right.

  11. Good show Mr President. But lusaka times must know how to report, we expected to know abt the crimes they committed n its ur job as journalists

  12. its a good move surprisingly. but let them first go through psychological evaluation and counseling so that they are ready to rejoin society

  13. political or not, it was a good thing those children are out of jail, including th unborn ones… as for their mothers, its a gud thing thr out but i pray thy dnt end up thr again, God help them build thr lives again….

whose responsibal for the unborn babies????????

  14. This the only thing that this TRIBAL ILLITERATE INCOMPETENT Dictator Sata can do, release hardcore criminals who will be used by PF as vigilantes on innocent Zambians.

When Kaunda’s son Wezi was killed by thugs like the ones who have been released, i wept a lot, but Sata was the machete MMD Chief organiser at that time. Now Sata is the Dictator of Zambia, to what extent and length these criminals will go to hurt innocent Zambians? God knows!

The Zambia Police does not have time for these hardcore criminals because they are busy policing, persecuting and arresting innocent opposition leaders.

I look forward to the day Edward Mumbi will celebrate his freedom while Sata and George Chela will be languishing somewhere for their corruption and abuse of office.

  15. I heard Dickson Jere saying that if he had known when he was at State House he could have changed things to the betterment of Zambians.

Now Jere is no longer at State House, George Chela is!

George Chella seem to be more brutal now than what Jere was at his helm!
The mind of George Chella and Sata seem to match the mind of Hitler. They are unleashing their wrath on innocent Zambians whom they are suppose to protect.

Fortunately the illiterate Dictator Sata may use his defense of not following the constitution because of his illiteracy but for George Chella Zambians do not know what defense he will use since he seem to have a certificate or diploma.

What Zambians want to see is to see the release of their freedom in political freedom of speech and assembly/association.

  16. THE PROBLEM WITH THIS KIND OF ACTION BY THE PRESIDENT IS THAT IT DOES NOT CONSIDER THE FEELINGS OR THE PAIN OF THOSE WHO WERE HURT OR INJURED BY THESE PRISONERS

    • Are you Mpundu Kazembe or Mpundu Kasembe? We do not have “Z” in our language! It was the whiteman who changed Kasembe to Kazembe because it was easier for him to say.

  17. “As President, Bill Clinton used his power under the U.S. Constitution to grant pardons and clemency to 456 people, thus commuting the sentences of those already convicted of a crime, and obviating a trial for those not yet convicted. On January 20, 2001, he pardoned 140 people in the final hours of his presidency”. Sata also used his power under the Zambian constitution. So what is the problem?

  18. Isn’t repentance supposed to be criteria for release? They will all start getting pregnant in hope of a pardon if this is the case.

  19. Well, well, well, its time to restock my share of 2013 bullet supply. I’m sure them guys will follow. More criminals in our neighbourhoods, less sleep and less money in our pockets.

  20. We Miss Presidents that speak to the people and answer what the people ask..Ka Barak Obama akamwaiche Has met the Press over 5 times after Christmas over one pressing issue.. Any way you warned us.. “Shhhhhhh…Dont Kubeba..” dont tell the voters anything. – dont just do stuff talk to the people

  21. Our dear President didn’t order anybody you Times of Zambia f**lish chaps; its called a presidential pardon even Ala Bee and ka Titus used it. If you have been a well behaved convict through out your jail term you may be rewarded with it.

  22. VICTIMS HERE CAN’T APPRECIATE ANYTHING FROM DE PRESIDENT. NGA MULIFIWELEWELE SATA TALIKO ? RISE UP AND BUILD YOUR DISTORTED IMAGE THEN U’LL SEE NO REASON WHEN DEBATING .U ARE SHOWING US HOW SICK ARE YO MINDS. DEBATE OBJECTIVELY!

  23. Things should be planned and not done at random. No one should be above the law. Releasing thieves and murderers as a well of gaining cheap political mileage is not just accelerating our own self destruction. Ba Sata are brain dead?

  24. Things should be planned and not done at random. No one should be above the law. Releasing thieves and murderers as a well of gaining cheap political mileage is not just accelerating our own self destruction. Ba Sata you are brain dead?

  25. What a good pardon it is, though at the same time it brings a lot of sadness to those people who were emotionally injured by these criminals. I hope the criminals have reformed and will be accepted in society.
I also hope the warders who impregnated some of these prisoners have been convicted already and should be responsible for the babies when they are born. I am just wondering what will happen to the ones who were already married and now have the pregnancy. Will society accept them?

  26. But our old man is dull, I dont know why he does things minus consulting me, all I heard was he was on stage with a mic releasing inmates…very frustrating way of doing things…CNP indeed as HH calls him.

  27. bloggers the president consults on who is to be released infact he just signs and not compose the list, the warders and their bosses pick according to whos well behaved and the gravity of their offence. On the pregnancies most of them go to jail already pregnant by their lovers, but isolated cases of abuse by warders are also evident and should be punishable.
