Deputy Minister of Health, Patrick Chikusu, says he is shocked to learn that male and female students share the same hostel at Serenje’s Chitambo School of Nursing.

Dr Chikusu said it is not right for both male and female students to share the same hostel, regardless of the accommodation challenges at the institute.

ZANIS reports from Serenje District that the minister said this when he toured the institute on Thursday.

He said it was morally and professionally wrong for male and female students to be sharing a hostel adding that this should not be tolerated.

He added that because the situation may encourage students to engage in illicit behaviour, which may in turn dent the good image of the institute.

He said while government understands that Chitambo Nursing School is faced with accommodation challenges, the situation cannot be allowed to continue.

“ Therefore, I advise management to find ways of putting up a temporal demarcation that will, at least, separate the male students from the female or just find an alternative space for the male students to ensure acceptable moral standards at the institute, “ he said.

He said the issue needs urgent attention because government does not want to see a situation where colleges are being turned into brothels and at no time should accommodation problems be excuses for laxity in training institutes.

He added that government, through the Ministry of Health, would consider constructing more hostels at the Nursing School to mitigate accommodation challenges.

Dr Chikusu said the PF government is working hard at ensuring that there are adequate training institutions for health workers in various parts of the country, in order to allow the local people to enroll.

Earlier, the Matron at Chitambo School of Nursing Hilda Mubanga said lack of accommodation is a major issue affecting the institution.

Ms. Mubanga, who is also a Nursing Officer in Charge at Chitambo Hospital, said as a result, the students are forced to share the only existing hostel, despite their gender.

She said this has also disadvantaged the community because the school can only accommodate 27 students who share one room per two students.

She said currently, there are 27 students pursuing their Nursing Careers at the Institute and of these, 17 are female while 10 are male.

Ms Mubanga, on behalf of the training institute, appealed to government to expand accommodation at the institute so that it can take in more students as more and more people would want to enroll at the Nursing School.

    • Ba CHikusu there is nothing wrong sharing accommodation with an opposite sex you just have to get a good attitude and mind set. Just next to my room I have Chinese students and one Russian girl I can never go have sex with them. Am not a dog

  1. LT please describe floor layout and give us idea of actual accommodation pattern so that we can understand what u mean by sharing of a hostel..are they using same ablutions ..sharing bed space? what do u mean..cos if its just a building i dont see the problem..at ZIT back in the day we once had accomodation crisis for the male students..so in one block..the guys were accomodated at the bottom..while we were on the top 2 floors.

    • Guys there is nothing wrong with that. Here in Russia and many other Europian countries use that system. There is no problem unless you they are using the same ablution block. otherwise don’t be dirty minded…

    • yep i dont see what the problem is cos like i sed it happened before at zit but i think my teachers training college na ma nursing institute have tuma old fashioned laws..cos i remember one of my cousins at a teachers training institute people of the opposite sex werent permitted to be in the same residence ..anyway each to his own.theres no problem with it..but we can debate about it till the cows come home..others are arguing ati culture..i cant even laugh

  2. there is no issue here, they are not sharing rooms or even toilets or bathrooms, they are sharing the same building, nothing really big here. here in China we are doing the same, my room is right opposite a girl’s room, from Congo. it could only be wrong if they shared the same rooms.

    • rocky, zhongguo hen hao, jiu shi tian qi tai leng le……….zan bi ya zenme yang? wo jin nian liu yue jiu yao hui guo le, tai xiang jia le. zhu ni shenti jiankang!!

    • namona, i was just a bit busy doing other things my friend. i would have written in characters but i guessed your computers would not recognize them. Malema, chi gelo chisuma but i don’t, too many guys after her, you know, life is funny, in my school having a foreign girlfriend especially black is an achievment kekekekeke!

    • @4.2 Malema here in China generally we African/Black guys are not interested in African/Black women. Firstly because most of them come here with the same attitudes of seeing a guy as a purse and like to play hard to get even when most are not so good looking compared to the Asians and Whites girls. Secondly obviously we are looking for a different experience. Frankly speaking I love Chinese girls because they are very honest, loving and not money driven. A lot of African guys here are either dating Asians especially Chinese or Korean or European girls. On the other hand it is very difficult for an African girl to find a boyfriend here. I am even surprised that the Congolese girl has so many suitors.

    • Mulondwe muzungu, you are right my friend, chinese girls are indeed loving, they love you just the way you are and they are very caring too, they are also “cheap” in the sense that they dont care what you eat with them or where you eat from, African ladies like eating expensive food, going to fancy restaurants and they always want the guy to pay, i gave up on them. i have been with a chinese girlfriend for 3 years now and our relationship is great, sadly i will be going home soon and probably that will be the end of it. however people with foreign firlgriends(black and white) feel like they are on top, this is due to the perception that Chinese girl are ‘ignorrant’ i have many friends who say this, both white and balck.

    • Muzungu, one more thing, it also depends on where you live in China, if you are in a big city like shanghai, nanjing, probably beijing too, most foreign guys go for Chinese/Asians, however if you are in a relatively small city like me, am in wuxi, the Chinese attitude and behaviour is different, they are indeed ignorrant and ‘racist’ but this is mainly due to luck of exposure, but once they understand you, then evrything will be fine! and guys here would be more willing to date a foreign girl black/white than Chinese. most African girls like expensive life, i cant AFFORD it, spending every coin on a girl? nafunta??

    • Many Zambians can be shocked to find out how other races treat their men. Problem is many people never leave Zambia to see for themselves. Foreign women are very loving and do not ‘check your shoes and belt’. Our women are gold diggers and many of them do not rely appreciate men, apart from the wallet. To add insult to injury, you even pay lobola for somebody with a lot of flaws, that brings nothing to the table!! I do not mean to offend anybody, but that has been my experience. My advice to men: Check around before you settle

    • This is exactly the attitude the great Sata and his PF is trying to eradicate. We don’t do things because the English are doing them! Stop having such inferiority complexes that suggest everything that a whiteman does is better. And if we don’t do what the English are doing we are not backward! We are just different.

  3. We share everything except Rooms with women. And I do not see anything Wrong here. The problem most of you have is “Corrupt minds”. You can not just see 2 people of different sexes together , “ninshi mwa concluder”.

  4. I dont see anything wrong with that. I share an apartment with two girls. we all have our own rooms but share the bathroom and kitchen and never have we engaged in those illicit activities that students in zambia do. backwardness mr Minister.

  5. It only shows how primitive we africans are still are. I don’t think there’s anything wrong with male and females sharing buildings,it would be if they were sharing rooms though.

    • I think the problem in Zambia is the refusal to face reality. The truth is that these are adults (over 18) and they know what they are at school for. Our culture encourages this absurd situation where boys and girls are not taught sex education, even though it is clear that unprotected relations are going on between boys and girls. The result is our young men and women are immature in their approach to relationships. This idea of treating college going adults like children is weird. Young college students in the UK rent houses in groups which may even be mixed (girls and boys). University hostels are definitely mixed, although girls and boys may not share rooms.

    • Speak for yourself and keep your inferiority complex to your confines. Iam african and Iam not primitive. Iam Black and Iam proud!
Since when did separation of student hostels on gender lines constitute priimitiveness? In Arab countries men and women even have separate public transport. I don’t hear any Arab saying WE are primitive

    • Arab culture is nothing to envy. They are so backward in the way they treat women. How can you even use them as an example. When a married woman is raped in Arabic countries, she is the one who is prosecuted for adultery!!

    • Mukame get your Comprehension skills improved. I haven’t anywhere said arab culture is to be admired. The point I made was that Arabs don’t call themselves primitive. Whether their culture is to be admired is besides the point.

    • Its not like zambians treat women well. Iris Kaingu was caught in a sex tape. The man wasn’t prosecuted. The woman was. On the blogs zambian men are always calling Masebo Dora Nawakwi prostitutes without any evidence to support the insults

  6. Ihave shared the same building with females but with diffrent rooms but same toilet and bathroom at chilonga midfwefery school in 2001 and no record iof illicit behaviour was recorded, but its not good according to our cutures and traditonal for both sexes its tempting so ican just encourage if govenment has muscles to put up seperate accomodations for students especially those doing basics nursing to serve from temptetrations.

  7. My personal conclusion…..Men should not train to be nurses or midwives. It is like forcing women to be fishermen or hunters!!!!! Leave nursing to our female folks who will do the job better than men..

  8. kimbaguist

Thank God its just you opinion because the world has now moved on from that archaic kind of thinking. It is what it is now. Whenever I was hospitalised both male and female nurses attended to me and I can’t complain to be honest.

  9. chilifye. as long as they are not sharing beds carelessly otherwise alot of these girls will graduate with babies not diplomas

  10. In Kenya, all training institutions for Doctors, nurses, physicians etc share hotels! no big deal. its new society we need only learn how to be ourselves with good virtual & good moral.
Train a society to have good moral other than using physical means like a mentality of separation

  11. Just wire the female students they are cleaner and smell nice than those village chickens that smell of imono ( caster oil)

  12. This is exactly the attitude the great PF is trying to eradicate. We don’t do things because the English are doing them! Stop having such inferiority complexes that suggest everything that a whiteman does is better. And if we don’t do what the English are doing we are not backward! We are just different.

  13. Well interesting that it is always thought of that such a scenario will lead to students enaging in “illicit” behaviour. I know of prison facilities in contries like Denmark where male and female inmates are not seperated, of course they are in their own rooms but same yard, just like we live at home in flats, where you are male and your neighbour is female.

  14. Nothing wrong with mixed gender occupancy hostel its room sharing I’m more concerned about….gov’t needs to consult the private sector for more innovative construction methods for student accommodation. There are cheaper multi-storey prefab construction options out there that can accommodate a 300 students in one building and constructed in half the time.

  15. Yet PF IS TALKING ABOUT BUILDING 3 UNIVERSITIES
IN LUAPULA AND WESTERN PROVINCE.PLEASE DEAL
WITH EXISTING PROBLEMS AS A MATTER OF PRIORITY.

  16. Reasoning in some of you is pathetic, just because in China they eat dogs so we must eat dogs as well. We are Africans and its unacceptable.

  17. Nothing wrong with that. They are not children but adults.I was trained at Ndola central hospital and UTH in both schools we shared accommodation not rooms and we did not have concerns.Nzeru za kukomboni yayi.

  18. ba rocky, differently from the topic. how much zed kwacha ngwee can it cost studying a masters in china with all the expenses.

    • shame on you, you can’t even afford your own flat in Glasgow. Accommodation in Glasgow is so cheap by the way we know Nick is an unemployed junkie so you might be forgiven for you nonsense.

    • …this fictitious “Nick” is getting poorer by the day.

Whoever created this “Mushota” charecter is quite good. Unfortunately they can’t pool off this trick on our entertaining ZWD.

  19. It is not a taboo ba Dr. all of them are adults those who are serious will finish their studies without problems. Just tell the GRZ to quick up and build more hostels. If not appeal to the local people to build houses (good houses) and rent them to the students. Problem solved mukwabo ba Chikusu.

  20. If this is an institution run under one of the government ministries then it is more troublesome that the Minister is shocked.
    1. Are there guidelines/rules/regulations how these institutions are supposed to be run?
    2. Is adequate funding provided to ensure the institution is run to abide by government set guidelines?
What the Minister should be doing is firing people who do not follow proper guidelines not acting surprised because you do not support the institution by providing funding.

  21. Its the same even in Australia, male and female students sharing hostels. There really is nothing wrong unless one has a corrupt mind and sees every person of the opposite sex as a sex object.

  22. Ba mushota tamulaupwa? Its nearly 3 years you have claimed to be engaged to Nick. When are the wedding bells ringing???

  23. In addition ba Mushota, marriage looses meaning if you already co habit for so long or have such a long engagement. I do not see you getting married any time soon.
